+++

Andrew has counted up all your nominations and tonight I reveal which songs will go to the QUALIFIER ROUND and which songs will go straight to the BIN.

There'll be a few twists and here's the first of them... the top 50 most nominated songs, regardless of volume, will qualify. ohmy.gif Because let's be real, some NOW! albums are better than others and we'd like the qualifier rounds to reflect that (and if we put through 5 per album as we said earlier, there'd be some truly shocking qualifiers and non-qualifiers).

secondly... there will actually be 51 songs going through due to a tie.

I can now reveal that there are seven qualifiers from the first ever edition of the compilation series we all know and love, soooo any predictions?? dance.gif

QUALIFIED: Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart

By far the most nominated-for song of this edition was UK national treasure Bonnie Tyler with her only number one single, which not long ago went to #1 on US iTunes because of the eclipse that happened there. Literally when will your faves ever?

QUALIFIED: Culture Club - Karma Chameleon

Another UK number one single and true classic, perhaps the most recognisable song from Culture Club too. 'Karma Chameleon' predictably sails through to the next round.

QUALIFIED: Kajagoogoo - Too Shy

Here's another former UK #1, this time from the Limahl fronted Kajagoogoo. Try saying that five times really fast.

DID NOT QUALIFY

These poor songs got absolutely no nominations! RIP in peace.

Limahl Only For Love
New Edition Candy Girl
Kajagoogoo Big Apple
Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack Tonight, I Celebrate My Love
Will Powers Kissing With Confidence
Culture Club Victims

QUALIFIED: Men At Work - Down Under

A former UK #1 single by Australian group with an iconic song about the land of Aus.

QUALIFIED: Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance

This one didn't go to #1 but it's been rather well remembered, another fun song.

QUALIFIED: Mike Oldfield - Moonlight Shadow (feat. Maggie Reilly)

This one is brilliantly 80s, not a UK #1 but again it's become a bit of a classique.

QUALIFIED: Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love

The first ever song to be featured on a NOW! volume, so rather fitting that this qualifies! This one is a UK #1 too.

DID NOT QUALIFY

Now let's look at all the songs that didn't get enough nominations. For all these, it's the end of the road.

So pleased that the gorgeous 'Moonlight Shadow' has qualified wub.gif I like all of those except 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart'. It's a fine song (I really like the Glee version) but I've never been able to take to Bonnie's singing voice.

QUALIFIED: Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want To Have Fun

Maybe if you all heard 8 year old me's rendition of this on Singstar it wouldn't have qualified, but as it stands it does.

QUALIFIED: Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax

A great energetic pop song that really only could've been done in the 80s. Was considered controversial back then too which helped its sales!

QUALIFIED: Nena - 99 Red Balloons

Another 80s classic here, I must say you've all chosen the RIGHT songs from this volume. Originally recorded in German but it is the English version that we all know and love.

QUALIFIED: Queen - Radio Ga Ga

The inspiration of (Queen) Lady Gaga's name and a rather great song to take inspiration from too. The first, and certainly not the last Queen song to be qualifying from this series.

DID NOT QUALIFY

Now let's look at all the songs that didn't get enough nominations. For all these, it's the end of the road. I must say you all need to hear 'Hyperactive' that is a rather underrated 80s gem that may have qualified if it were more well known.

Nik Kershaw Wouldn't It Be Good 6
Flying Pickets Only You 6
Eurythmics Here Comes The Rain Again 6
Matthew Wilder Break My Stride 4
Howard Jones What Is Love? 4
Fiction Factory (Feels Like) Heaven 4
Thomas Dolby Hyperactive 4
David Bowie Modern Love 4
Paul McCartney Pipes Of Peace 4
Thompson Twins Hold Me Now 3
Madness Michael Caine 2
Re-Flex The Politics Of Dancing 2
China Crisis Wishful Thinking 2
Slade Run Runaway 2
Carmel More, More, More 1
Tracey Ullman My Guy's Mad At Me 1
Joe Fagin That's Living Alright 1
The Smiths What Difference Does It Make? 1
Rolling Stones Undercover Of The Night 1
Big Country Wonderland 1
Duran Duran New Moon On Monday 1
Matt Bianco Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed 0
Julia & Company Breaking Down (Sugar Samba) 0
Hot Chocolate I Gave You My Heart (Didn't I) 0
Snow White Bird Of Paradise 0
Culture Club It's A Miracle 0

We'll be going to NOW! 3 next where we have ten(!) qualifications! This was by far the most popular volume!

New Song by Howard Jones was the biggest loss from Volume 1. I see I was the only person who voted for it. All the qualifiers are good songs.

'99 Red Balloons' is my favourite from that edition so I'm glad that it's one of the small amount that made it from Now 2!

QUALIFIED: Bob Marley & The Wailers - One Love/People Get Ready

Reggae legend Bob Marley just about manages to qualify alongside a whole third of this compilation!

QUALIFIED: Bronski Beat - Small Town Boy

A classic 80s synth pop hit and the inspiration behind 00s dance anthem 'Tell Me Why' alongside their other hit 'Why' (which has not qualified).

QUALIFIED: Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time

Well she is rather popular, as 'Time After Time' becomes her second qualification in as many volumes. Another decent song from her but I do prefer 'Girls' a lot more.

QUALIFIED: Duran Duran - The Reflex

One of the 80s biggest bands with one of their #1 singles.

DID NOT QUALIFY

To the surprise of absolutely no-one Gary Glitter received no nominations. Nor did any of these.

Womack & Womack Love Wars 0
Flying Pickets When You're Young And In Love 0
Gary Glitter Dance Me Up 0
The Art Company Susanna 0
David Sylvian Red Guitar 0

QUALIFIED: Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes

Another absolutely massive song from this band, this one spent 9 weeks at #1 (and in a time where that was a huge achievement) so considering that it's rather unsurprising that it qualified here.

QUALIFIED: Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)

I didn't have Buzzjack down as Phil Collins fans but here he is getting a second qualification. This song was also a massive #1 hit for Steve Brookstein, who enjoyed a lengthy career afterwards and was forever grateful to Simon Cowell for his X-Factor victory.

QUALIFIED: Propaganda - Dr. Mabuse

Perhaps a surprising qualifier, unless of course to those who participate in BJSC as this was a successful entry for Rolloland just last month, which introduced the song to most of us.

DID NOT QUALIFY

Some more non-qualifiers here while we wait for the last 3 qualifiers to be announced.

Alison Moyet Love Resurrection 2
Bananarama Robert De Niro's Waiting 2
Madness One Better Day 2
Special A.K.A. Nelson Mandela 1

QUALIFIED: Queen - I Want To Break Free

I told you Queen would be back, and here is another classic song of theirs.

QUALIFIED: The Weather Girls - It's Raining Men

One of the original proper gay anthems, and miles better than the Geri Halliwell cover.

QUALIFIED: Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

The signature Wham! song, if you don't count Last Christmas that is, and one of the biggest hits of the 80s too helping to launch a long career for George Michael.

DID NOT QUALIFY

Now let's look at all the songs that didn't get enough nominations. For all these, it's the end of the road. Except 'Young At Heart' which will have another chance later on in a future volume!

Tina Turner What's Love Got To Do With It? 6
Ultravox Dancing With Tears In My Eyes 5

QUALIFIED: Giorgio Moroder & Philip Oakley - Together In Electric Dreams

A brill track from one of the OGs of electronic music and Philip Oakley from The Human League, glad to see it qualify.

QUALIFIED: Lionel Richie - Hello

Perhaps his most well known song, before there was Adele there was Lionel Richie.

QUALIFIED: The Pointer Sisters - Jump (For My Love)

Before there was Girls Aloud, there was The Pointer Sisters.

DID NOT QUALIFY

Not really a fan of 'Wake Me Up before You Go-Go'. I much prefer Club Tropicana.

Yay for the Weather Girls, their video I remember being played a lot on VH1 iirc in the late 90s for some reason. Fun song!

That Jump version is a lot better than Girls Aloud, and Together In Electric Dreams is a lovely song.
