+++

Andrew has counted up all your nominations and this afternoon I will reveal which songs will go to the QUALIFIER ROUND and which songs will go straight to the BIN.

There'll be a few twists and here's the first of them... the top 50 most nominated songs, regardless of volume, will qualify. ohmy.gif Because let's be real, some NOW! albums are better than others and we'd like the qualifier rounds to reflect that (and if we put through 5 per album as we said earlier, there'd be some truly shocking qualifiers and non-qualifiers).

secondly... there will actually be 58 songs going through due to a tie.

Here's a quick glance at which volumes you deemed to be the best from the second decade, based on how many songs from each volume have qualified.

NOW! 11: 04
NOW! 12: 05
NOW! 13: 05
NOW! 14: 06
NOW! 15: 04
NOW! 16: 03
NOW! 17: 04
NOW! 18: 11
NOW! 19: 09
NOW! 20: 06

You really loved volumes 18 and 19, not so much 16 and the rest pretty evenly.

Also in this thread I will reveal the ten songs from volumes 1-10 that will qualify to the semi-finals. With so many classics in the first round, there are bound to be many brutal cuts and indeed some volumes will have no representation at all in the semi-finals.

Any predictions before we get going? I'll leave it open for an hour or so before we start.

QUALIFIED

Belinda Carlisle – Heaven Is A Place On Earth

Her debut single and only UK #1 hit, and a strong 80s pop song. This was the most nominated out of every song in the decade so it probably has a strong chance of going to the semi-finals.

Elton John – Candle In The Wind

Originally a #11 hit in 1974 it was re-released for 1988 reaching #5. And you all know what happened in 1997.

Kylie Minogue – I Should Be So Lucky

The debut hit for Kylie Minogue, it spent 5 weeks at #1 and became one of her biggest hits ever, starting one of the biggest careers in pop music history.

Pet Shop Boys – Always On My Mind

The third #1 for Pet Shop Boys and also a Christmas number one denying The Pogues of it. It was a cover version but very much a reinvention in their own signature style.

DID NOT QUALIFY

I thought 'Suedehead' would be a bit more popular but other than that no shocks here.

Billy Ocean – Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car 5
Eddy Grant – Gimme Hope Jo'Anna 5
Morrissey – Suedehead 4
Vanessa Paradis – Joe Le Taxi 4
Bomb The Bass – Beat Dis 4

QUALIFIED

Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight ['88 Remix]

Originally #2 in 1981 it was remixed for 1988 where it reached #4. It came back in 2007 reaching #14 and made another appearance in the NOW! series.

Rose Royce – Car Wash

A disco classic reaching #9 in 1976 but re-released in 1988 reaching #20.

S-Express – Theme From S-Express

One of the earliest dance #1 hits, rather disco influenced but very much early days for house music.

Salt 'N' Pepa – Push It

One of my fave 80s tracks it combines dance and hip-hop rather well. It went to #2 becoming their first UK chart hit.

Tiffany – I Think We're Alone Now

This was the debut hit for Tiffany which became her first and only #1.

Primal Scream – Loaded

This one only made it to #16 but it has been rather well remembered as their album sold well and was critically acclaimed.

QUALIFIED

Adventures Of Stevie V – Dirty Cash (Money Talks)

A big early eurodance hit which I'm glad to see makes it in, which Dizzee Rascal sampled later on.

DNA feat. Suzanne Vega – Tom's Diner

A rather interesting song about rather mundane events going in a coffee shop.

Elton John – Sacrifice

A big #1 hit for Elton becoming his second #1 and first without a featured artist.

Roxette – It Must Have Been Love

The second biggest Swedish act ever they had quite a few hits with this being their most recognised.

Sinιad O'Connor – Nothing Compares 2 U

Written by Prince this was Sinead's second hit single but only top ten hit, spending 4 weeks at #1.

Sting – An Englishman In New York

Formerly of The Police this became another top 20 hit for Sting and has lasted longer in public conscious than all of his other solo hits.

QUALIFIED

Talk Talk – It's My Life

A top 20 hit for them this regained popularity after No Doubt covered it in the 00s.

The Cure – Close To Me

One of their best hits it's nonetheless a surprise this goes through when 'The Lovecats' couldn't but I'm pleased.

The LA's – There She Goes

A proper classic one-hit wonder.

The Righteous Brothers – Unchained Melody

Starting a proper love affair for this song that the UK had this 60s hit was re-released becoming a big #1 hit years before it would be taken to the top again by two different acts.

Wilson Phillips – Hold On

They had a few hits but this one overshadows all others and got popular again from being used in Bridesmaids, it's got a rather sweet sentiment too.

QUALIFIED

Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes – (I've Had) The Time Of My Life

A #6 hit in 1987, for some reason it got re-released only 3 years later and made it to #8.

C&C Music Factory – Gonna Make You Sweat

A proper dance classic with a riff most people here are familiar with.

Enigma – Sadness Part 1

An odd hit single let alone #1 hit but rather nice even if it sounds a bit like elevator music.

Massive Attack – Unfinished Sympathy

This one has certainly aged well, only peaked at #13 but is very well remembered. Took me a few listens to get it but it's rather brilliant.

Queen – Innuendo

Always pleasing to see more Queen in, this was one of their #1 singles too but isn't all too well remembered sadly.
