So we've been debating at the office who is the most famous person alive today and my coworkers were saying Donald Trump but I suggested that Justin Bieber could be more famous than him. So who do you think is the most famous person alive today?

I think I'd say the Queen, if we look at all generations and who people would know, obviously it differs across the world but surely it'd be like her or sadly Donald Trump who EVERYONE knows.

In terms of non-Presidential/Royalty, i’d go with Oprah Winfrey.

If we go for fame as someone everyone is aware of and regularly talks about, there’s no option but Trump. It’s normally the sitting American president by default but Trump’s controversial aspects enhance his fame.

The Queen is up there but I doubt she has ever made all that many headlines in the huge number of non-Commonwealth countries so I think that disadvantages her a little.

Entertainment-wise, Ed Sheeran. You wouldn't believe the popularity of his music even in countries that normally don’t accept many Western imports.

I think Pope Francis would at least rival Trump in terms of worldwide name recognition. (I might have Googled this question to find that answer, but it is a good shout magic.gif)

Barack Obama is probably still up there too even though he's not in office any more.

I'd definitely say the Queen, but in terms of celebrity I'm not sure, maybe David Beckham? Britney Spears? unsure.gif

Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are household names too I would say. Richard Branson is still pretty famous.

Sir Paul McCartney was the first person to come into my head in terms of musicians. The Beatles were obviously huge and the word of their legacy continues to spread to younger generations as well.

Also Putin. Kim Jong-un. And I think Xi Jinping is rising in the world leader stakes lately. I think that would be about the limit for universally famous world leaders though.

Pope Francis is an almighty (get it?) shout. The Dalai Lama is probably the next most recognisable religious leader and I would say he's a bit lower down on the scale.

Yes and yes, and on this front, although not QUITE as recognisable, also Elon Musk what with his latest tech adventures and he's only going to continue getting famous, while Branson's star is past its peak.

Probably Trump, unfortunately.

Interesting question though. I'm gonna pose this to my Facebook and Twitter.

Overall, I'd say Donald Trump, he didn't almost win Time's Person of the Year twice for nothing. Oprah Winfrey is a good shout though.

Expanding this to certain areas - in terms of acting, Leonardo Dicaprio, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep come to mind. Sports is an interesting one - Cristiano Ronaldo seems a good shout these days.

I think you guys are confusing fame with infamy (Re: Trump)

I’d say the Kardashians as well but they fall into this category as well. I can’t think of a single person on the internet who likes them.

He could fall into both 'famous' and 'infamous' granted, but the former isn't mutually exclusive to good people. It's literal definition is 'known about by many people'.

The wonderful Pope Francis, as well as Pope Benedict, would be top of the list. Donald Trump & Barrack Obama would also be up there, as well as The Queen. In music terms, Bob Dylan or Madonna.
