jump to list of qualifiers

Andrew has counted up all your nominations and later this afternoon I will reveal which songs will go to the QUALIFIER ROUND and which songs will go straight to the BIN.

The top 50 most nominated songs, regardless of volume, will qualify. Because let's be real, some NOW! albums are better than others and we'd like the qualifier rounds to reflect that (and if we put through 5 per album as we said earlier, there'd be some truly shocking qualifiers and non-qualifiers).

This time there will be 51 songs going through, these will be all the songs that got 15 or more nominations (the highest cut-off point yet). In the last round 13 nominations was enough but the quality has seemingly shot up this time and as such there will be quite a few brutal cuts.

NOW! 31: 05
NOW! 32: 06
NOW! 33: 03
NOW! 34: 05
NOW! 35: 05
NOW! 36: 05
NOW! 37: 05
NOW! 38: 05
NOW! 39: 08
NOW! 40: 04

A very even spread with the exception of volume 39 which is by some distance the most loved, and volume 33 the least.

Also in this thread I will reveal the ten songs from volumes 21-30 that will qualify to the semi-finals. With so many classics in the first round, there are bound to be many brutal cuts and indeed some volumes will have no representation at all in the semi-finals. You may still vote in the previous qualifier until 7pm.

Any predictions before we get going then? ohmy.gif

QUALIFIED

>> Livin' Joy - Dreamer <<

>> Oasis - Some Might Say <<

>> Pulp - Common People <<

>> Seal - Kiss From A Rose <<

>> Supergrass - Alright <<

Now firmly into the 90s which means Britpop and a whole lot of it will be qualifying this evening. Perhaps one of the defining songs of the genre - Pulp 'Common People' got the most nominations from this volume, even if it couldn't win the BJSC 90s vs 00s spin-off. It is joined by Oasis with one of their #1 hits 'Some Might Say' from the iconic 'Morning Glory' album and Supergrass with their signature hit 'Alright'. The only dance act to make it through here are Livin Joy with #1 hit and Heart FM club classic 'Dreamer', and Seal gets movie soundtrack hit 'Kiss From A Rose' through. A nice set of qualifiers here and no truly baffling exclusions.

QUALIFIED

>> Blur - Country House <<

>> Coolio feat. L.V. - Gangsta's Paradise <<

>> Donna Summer - I Feel Love (Rollo & Sister Bliss Mix) <<

>> Everything But The Girl - Missing (Todd Terry Remix) <<

>> Oasis - Roll With It <<

>> The Human League - Don't You Want Me (Red Jerry Mix) <<

Both songs from the famous Blur vs Oasis chart battle safely qualify but the most loved song from this edition was Coolio 'Gangsta's Paradise', understandably as it is one of the biggest rap hits ever. Classic dance smash 'Missing' also makes it in as do two re-workings of former #1 hits from many years before the release of this compilation, though I suspect a few nominated them based on their originals as they were tagged as such. Good to see them through anyhow.

QUALIFIED

>> Babylon Zoo - Spaceman <<

>> Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger <<

>> Oasis - Live Forever <<

Only three song through here and two of them are from Oasis, they do seem to have a lot of Buzzjack fans anyway so not much of a surprise to see these two in. 'Spaceman' was a former big #1 for Babylon Zoo and their only proper hit, I thought it was a bit forgotten and it probably is generally but quite a few of us seem to like it. Would've been nice to see Pulp in with them too but they missed out by 3 nominations so not even that close.

QUALIFIED

>> Gina G - Ooh... Aah Just A Little Bit <<

>> Oasis - Wonderwall <<

>> Robert Miles - Children <<

>> Spice Girls - Wannabe <<

>> Underworld - Born Slippy <<

Oasis' biggest song 'Wonderwall' was always going to get through and it of course had the most amount of nominations from this volume. Some more dance songs in finally with classic trance hits 'Children' and 'Born Slippy' (two absolute essentials!) also joined by dance of the more cheesy variety from Gina G. Then finally we now get into the Spice Girls era of the 90s and unsurprisingly quite a few of their tracks will be qualifying tonight and their huge 'Wannabe' is of course the first of those. Mark Morrison just one nomination away from joining them too. sad.gif

QUALIFIED

>> Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over <<

>> Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany's <<

>> Faithless - Insomnia <<

>> George Michael - Fastlove (Forthright Edit) <<

>> Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There <<

It took them 14 volumes but Crowded House get a second song through to the qualifiers round following 'Weather With You' with 'Don't Dream It's Over' perhaps helped by Miley Cyrus' cover at the Manchester benefit concert. Deep Blue Something also qualify with one of the biggest songs of that year and Faithless with one of the best of the entire 90s. 'Insomnia' got the most nominations from this volume which is great to see as a song I obviously love. George Michael also gets through with 'Fastlove' even though it isn't the original version of that song (which appeared in a much later edition following his death) and Buzzjack faves Spice Girls are also in again.

Boo at Ini Kamoze missing out and 'Renegade Master' flopping </3 decent results so far otherwise. My nomination for 'Missing' was based on the original version, never been too keen on the Todd Terry remix ~

My only three nominations for 33 are THE three that go through *.* Those classics aside, that volume was seriously lacking compared to the rest.

All excellent noms so far~

>> Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity <<

>> No Doubt - Don't Speak <<

>> Sash! - Encore Une Fois <<

>> The Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin' Beats <<

>> White Town - Your Woman <<

Jamiroquai get through with their debut NOW appearance and funky pop tune 'Virtual Insanity'. In fact it is the debut NOW appearance for all the artists that make it through here, including the only for White Town (who had no other top 40 hits anyway). Also through are No Doubt with breakthrough hit 'Don't Speak' which was the most nominated for track on this edition. And a few dance tracks from Sash! and The Chemical Brothers which I'm glad to see through but very annoyingly The Prodigy and DJ Quicksilver both miss out by one vote. mad.gif I'd definitely trade those two for the dance tracks we did get if I could. Also very close is Robert Miles' other hit, and also The Source who would be qualifying here with 18 nominations but they are already in the semi-finals so there is not any point in letting it compete in the qualifier round again.

>> En Vogue - Don't Let Go (Love) <<

>> Hanson - MMMBop <<

>> Spice Girls - Who Do You Think You Are <<

>> The Cardigans - Lovefool <<

>> The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony <<

En Vogue go through with their most well known hit 'Don't Let Go' perhaps aided by the James Hype reworking that was a chart hit last year. Hanson with their massive breakthrough hit also qualify becoming one of the few boybands to make it (if not the first, if you can even call them that anyway). After Spice Girls missing out on vol.36 with 'Mama' the other more popular side of their double A makes it in to become their third qualifier, but they weren't the most nominated for from this volume. Buzzjack seems to love its indie hits even more than its girlbands as The Verve got the most nominations with their breakthrough smash 'Bittersweet Symphony' (which is better than the Spice Girls song anyway so good taste is being shown!). Finally The Cardigans also get in with their biggest hit 'Lovefool'. And there's more annoyances for me down below as Sash! and Ultra Natι juust miss out on qualifying too.

I would say that the 1997 version of "You Got the Love" is musically distinct enough from the original to warrant making the cut. If you were to listen to the instrumentals of both versions separately, you'd find it hard enough to differentiate them.

Also, *sadface* that neither of the Suede tracks made the cut. I think they were their only 2 appearances on a Now! album, unless a later one made it as well.

QUALIFIED

>> Chumbawamba - Tubthumping <<

>> Dario G - Sunchyme <<

>> Meredith Brooks - Bitch <<

>> Spice Girls - Spice Up Your Life <<

>> The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work <<

The two most nominated from this album happen to also be the two biggest chart hits of the album, 'Spice Up Your Life' which gives the Girls yet another qualifier and also 'Tubthumping' from Chumbawamba, one of those classic 'one hit wonders that actually weren't at all' (ironically their follow up was called 'Amnesia' and seems to be forgotten by nearly everyone). Big dance tune 'Sunchyme' also makes it in thankfully but we unfortunately just lose Gala. Then for some reason we have Meredith Brooks in too. I don't remember that being well loved here but it apparently is, more than 'Freed From Desire'. mad.gif

>> Steps - 5, 6, 7, 8 <<

The most loved volume from this decade we have 8 qualifiers here, which includes a double appearance from Robbie Williams whose iconic 'Angels' and 'Let Me Entertain You' both qualify. It is also the first appearance from Steps with '5, 6, 7, 8' who we may see more from in the following decade, and from All Saints with 'Never Ever'. Aqua with novelty classic 'Barbie Girl' were always going to qualify too and some other big #1s get through from Cornershop and Run D.M.C and finally Natalie Imbruglia had the most nominated for track on this volume with breakthrough hit 'Torn'. And just as 'Stop' missed out on #1 for Spice Girls, it also misses out on a qualifier here which is no big loss really.

QUALIFIED

>> Fatboy Slim - The Rockafeller Skank <<

>> Massive Attack - Teardrop <<

>> Spice Girls - Viva Forever <<

>> The Tamperer (feat. Maya) - Feel It <<
