A little over a week ago a group of 11- to 16-year-old Thai boys and their football coach went missing in a cave. Heavy rains meant that a large part of the cave complex was flooded, but there was always a hope that they had managed to find somewhere dry and safe.

Today, a pair of divers (from England) found all thirteen of them safe. Given their ordeal, they seem to be in pretty good shape. However, there is still a race against time before more heavy rains potentially flood the caves again. It could be a nervous few days reminiscent of the Chilean miners who were rescued in 2010.

The rescue operation is now underway. Some reports suggest the first boys are already out.

Last I heard (when that brave hero died on his way back from delivering supplies), that it was looking incredibly bleak for them! Excellent to hear they're actually getting out, I was prepared for the story to not have a happy end.

Oh this is some uplifting news, the last I heard they were expected to be stuck there until possibly October! Was definitely foreseeing a tragic end to this especially after the diver who died in the cave.

Wow after hearing about the unlikelihood of them actually being saved I was expecting the worst but SO glad it’s looking more hopeful. Praying everything goes well

Gutting to hear about the diver who lost their life. Otherwise this qualifies as a good news story. So wonderful they’ve been able to start reducing them. It’s nice to see the world come together to help too. So many divers and experts from around the world there to help. It’s good to remember that when we stop fighting over shit that don’t matter we can do some real good things by working together

FIFA have said that they hope all the boys and their coach will be able to attend the World Cup final on Sunday. It would be fantastic if that can happen.

I totally agree with the point about international cooperation. It shows what can be achieved in a short time if the right people from around the world unite behind a common purpose. There are still people working on imaginative solutions that could prove useful in future if not in this case.

I agree with all the comments, so tragic about the diver, I hope the boys all get out safely, and it's a credit to working together for a worthy aim. Something politicians could learn a lesson from.

This is a remarkable feat, it must be terrifying for those tired boys in relatively cold and muddy waters with next to zero visibility in narrow, rocky passageways.

Very, very happy to see all of "the wild boars" and their coach have been rescued and are now safe.

I can't imagine the psychological effects it will have on all of them after this.
