Chart Commentary

Thanks to everyone for all the replies last week! I'm on my summer holidays now so I will endeavour to return the favour to everyone wub.gif

Male hip-hop has generally been a genre that struggles in my chart. Although numerous rappers have top 10 hits to their name from featured credits, only Pitbull (Timber, We Are One), Tinchy Stryder (Bright Lights), Tinie Tempah (Lover Not a Fighter, Girls Like, Text From Your Ex), Professor Green (Lullaby), Macklemore (Same Love) and Devlin (Rewind) have achieved top 10s as lead artists, and Rewind is the only one of those to have topped the chart. In 6.5 years of my chart, that's a notably tiny pool. That makes the success of American rapper Diego Leanos, who goes by the name of Lil Xan, even more impressive.

I went to see Lil Xan live on Saturday night (14th July), and it was an experience unlike any other. I'd not been to a rap concert before, the closest being Not3s supporting Bebe Rexha, so the atmosphere was brand new to me. It was great though, and wonderfully unpolished as Diego put on a show that was purely him, through and through. As a result, he sees a massive impact in my chart this week. The four songs he had charting a week ago has increased to seven, as Slingshot (the lead single from the TOTAL XANARCHY album) and Emotions (from the Heartbreak Soldiers mixtape) chart for the first time, and his only Hot 100 entry Betrayed re-enters at a new peak of #28.

Of the four that charted last week (his four top 10 hits), only Lies doesn't register a climb - it sticks at #4 for a second week, although it's worth noting that it has undoubtedly had a bigger impact this week than last! Saved By the Bell climbs 37-34 despite not being performed, and Diplo collaboration Color Blind leaps 38-15, enough to achieve this week's highest climber status (and, thanks to Why Don't We's Trust Fund Baby dropping out, it also holds the title of longest runner with Cardi B's I Like It). Most notable however is the 6-1 jump of Moonlight, the current single from TOTAL XANARCHY and a collaboration with Charli XCX. Having peaked at #3 ten weeks ago, it now surpasses that position to give Diego his best position to date - a chart-topper. He becomes only the second male rapper to top my chart as a lead artist, following Devlin, and only the third rapper altogether to gain a #1 as a lead artist (Iggy Azalea achieved five, plus two as a feature). This success is unprecedented for a rapper of any kind, with only Iggy seeing success like this in my chart's history. It's Charli XCX's fourth #1 and second of the year, following Rita Ora's Girls.

Lil Xan might be in the past but Diego is definitely here to stay.

Formed on ABC's short-lived talent show Boy Band, (l-r) Michael Conor, Drew Ramos, Brady Tutton, Chance Perez and Sergio Calderon won their places in In Real Life and a recording contract with Hollywood Records. Their debut single Eyes Closed blasted to a #3 debut in my chart, as did the follow-up Tattoo (How 'Bout You) earlier this year, and latest single Tonight Belongs to You manages to go one better, only just losing out on becoming their first chart-topper.

Blasting to a top 5 debut, Ariana Grande's latest single God is a woman becomes her fourth top 10 hit of the year. It's the second single from her fourth album Sweetener, and follows up the #1 hit no tears left to cry, as well as features Bed (with Nicki Minaj) and Dance to This (with Troye Sivan). Ariana's now had 13 top 10 hits, including a huge six #1s, and has achieved at least one top 10 hit every year since Right There became her first in 2013.

Although O.D.L as a duo have never made my chart, Levi Jones and Drew Dirksen have both been part of a number of top 10 hits together. They were formerly members of The Tide, who debuted with #2 hit Young Love in 2016 and registered their final hit Naked, also a #2 hit, last summer. Members Austin and Nate are currently embarking on their own individual paths, while Drew and Levi opted to stay together and form O.D.L, a pop/EDM project that stands for Our Dysfunctional Life. I saw them live earlier this year, not knowing any of their new material, but now they've finally released their debut single. Next to Me was one of the highlights of their set, and debuts at #8 this week - the first top 10 for O.D.L, but Drew and Levi's fifth in all.

The Tide
2016 02 Young Love | 1 | 13-2-4-6-13-22-26-35-x-10-7-9-12-19-25-29-37-x-34-x (17 non-consecutive weeks)
2016 01 Click My Fingers | 2 | 13-1-7-4-3-9-14-19-26-29-33-34-37-32-35-34-x-26-x (17 non-consecutive weeks)

2017 02 Naked | 4 | 2-3-7-16-19-23-23-31-40-x (9 weeks)

Despite Lil Xan mania on the singles chart, he gets trapped at #2 and #3 with Heartbreak Soldiers and TOTAL XANARCHY respectively. I saw another act live this week, for the TENTH time in just over four years. The Vamps released Night & Day (Day Edition), their fourth album last week, and even without their live gig, it was a surefire contender for my #1 album, but the gig propelled it even further up. I've made the decision to separate it from the Night Edition (which re-enters at #10), because they see it as their fourth album despite the double-album concept. This means it's their fourth #1 album, which ties the record for most #1 albums with Taylor Swift and One Direction.

Elsewhere on singles, there are chart debuts for Dzeko, Preme and Elley Duhé. The latter is the vocalist on Zedd's new single Happy Now, the follow-up to #1 hit The Middle, and considering it's already #13 from only a couple of days of impact, it's coming for a massive climb next week. In fun trivia, Preme was formerly known as P. Reign, the original guest rapper on Alyssa Reid's Alone Again. He was ditched for Jump Smokers in the UK release, and in my chart, Alone Again has no guests credited, as most of its impact came from the solo "Pt 2" version. This means that Preme missed out on a credit on the biggest hit in my chart's history, as Alone Again spent a whopping 73 consecutive weeks in my top 40.

Hey Joseph! hi.gif

I've been looking at your chart for a while and I have followed your playlist on Spotify. I listen to pop music a lot now (though I'm OK listening to other music genres) and I like your chart 'cause you have some decent pop songs on there that sadly never made the real Top 40 charts. I discovered some new younger singers thanks to your chart, and I like them! wub.gif

Hope you have a good time for summer! I'll probably chat with ya soon. happy.gif

Hey Joseph,

As you’ve likely gathered by now I am back to doing my own weekly personal chart yahoo.gif, yes it is the return of the Top 40 Countdown by awardinary. Part of my reasons for doing this was not only to express my enjoyment of music but also to give my opinions on what music others are currently enjoying too! With that in mind, let me share my opinion on your chart! tongue.gif

My highlights from your chart at the moment are Jonas Blue, Cheat Codes, Clean Bandit, Jax Jones, Au/Ra and Tiësto also! There are a few pop songs within your chart which I’ve not yet heard but am hoping to soon! Got to love a bit of Rita, Ariana and Camilla too! biggrin.gif

Do you have a public playlist of your personal chart either on Apple Music, Spotify or YouTube? If so I would be interested in following it (if I don’t already!).

Also I’d just like to add that it’s my privilege to be asked to be one quarter of the moderating team here in the personal charts forum, I hope I can continue to make this forum an enjoyable experience for everyone! biggrin.gif

hi Joseph!

not at all a lil xan fan but interesting that the week you finally have another rap song at #1 I also have one; Juice WRLD becomes my first rap #1 in years!
'god is a woman' is another good single from Ari, she's really cementing herself as one of the big pop ladies now and I'm cool with that with her current consistency (though 'no tears' is a fair bit better than her other 2 singles so far)
Tiësto & Dzeko finally impacting here too! tongue.gif dance.gif where is Sir Drake though? unsure.gif

cool chart!
