CHART COMMENTARY

LSD ensure their success with 'Thunderclouds' was no fluke after it's dramatic ascent to the top last week, as they spend their second week at number one. In fact, perhaps due to the fact that neither of this week's two new entries came close to breaching my top 10, for only the fifth time in my personal chart history, the entire top 5 has remained static.

The most recent instance of this was back in the last week of 2014, when Ben Haenow's 'Something I Need' led an unchanged top 5 in that single's second week at the summit. By contrast, the top 3 has been static on 34 different occasions, 19 of those in the last three years, the most recent being in the summer when George Ezra led the way with 'Shotgun' in its fourth week at the top.

As Christine and the Queens now surpass the #8 peak of their debut single 'Tilted' to have their highest peaking track to date with '5 Dollars' moving up three places to #6, there's a surprise return to the top 10 for Niall Horan. His nine week old 'Finally Free' - which made #3 upon release in July - saw the somewhat belated release of its official video last week, hence it climbs seven to #10, a position it last occupied three weeks ago.

Norway's Hanne Leland made her debut back in March when 'Carry On' entered and peaked at #10. Her new single 'Fortress' arrives just two places short of that at #12 - the highest new entry of the week by all accounts, but also the lowest instance of this since the first week of January this year.

Just below her is the week's other new arrival, as Amy Macdonald makes a welcome return to my personal chart at #13 with her latest release 'Women Of The World'. It is the title track from the Scots singer-songwriter's forthcoming greatest hits package. Her biggest hit to date is still 'This Is The Life', the title track of her debut album which peaked at #2 exactly a decade ago in January 2008.

Apart from a four place ascendancy for John Legend with 'Preach' to #15, there is very little else to comment on this week. Make no mistake though, there are some big new singles waiting in the wings for release over the coming few weeks which will give things a much needed shot in the arm as Q4 gets under way in style. Consider this the calm before the storm.

Your chance to see how my personal chart looked back at a given point in the last 20 years. This week in 2000: S Club 7 make it five number ones in a row, plus big new entries for Kylie, and the debut from Sugababes.
