Spice Girls' Top 10 biggest singles on the Official Chart
06 November 2018 | By Rob Copsey

Ahead of the group's 2019 reunion tour, we look into the numbers behind the Spice Girls' big hits.

It has been the worst kept secret in music this year, but now it's official: Spice Girls are back.

The group (minus Victoria Beckham, hmph) will embark on their Friendship Never Ends UK tour in 2019, kicking off in Manchester on June 1 - more info including ticket details here.

To whet your appetite before then, we're revealing the numbers behind their hits, and what an array of hits they are.

Wannabe
The group's biggest single is, perhaps unsurprisingly, their debut single Wannabe, with 1.61 million combined sales (split between 1.3 million sales and 31 million streams). The track turned them into a global sensation almost overnight, scoring seven weeks at Number 1 in the UK and topping the charts just about everywhere, including America, Germany and Australia.

As with most of their music, Wannabe was co-written by the group along with Biff Stannard and Matt Rowe. It was completed in 30 minutes, mainly because the lyrics are a series of different lines, skits and raps made up by each member of the group. In fact, so unusual is Wannabe's composition that their label wanted to release Say You'll Be There or Spice album track Love Thing as their lead single.

2 Become 1
To put the scale of Spice Girls' success into perspective, they landed the Official Christmas Number 1 single three years consecutively, joining The Beatles as the only other act to manage this. 2 Become 1 was the first of them and is most enduring, as now-adult fans understand its true meaning. Earlier this month, it became a meme for the clocks changing, marking the end of British summertime. It's sales to date stand at 1.21 million, made up of 1.14 million sales and 7.6 million streams.

Who Do You Think You Are?
Where Wannabe made them instant global stars, Who Do You Think You Are? sent them stratospheric. It's 2am on the dancefloor, three tequilas deep. It's Mel B in leopard print. It's Victoria's space age catsuit. It's Comic Relief, Cool Britannia and, of course, that Union Jack dress. The song spent three weeks at Number 1 (as a double A-side with Mama) and has 763,000 combined sales to date.

Viva Forever
For some, Viva Forever was the last true Spice single as it was released shortly before Geri quit the band, after which things never really recovered. Despite being the fourth single from their Spiceworld album, it reached Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart and ranks as their seventh biggest single overall with 726,000 combined sales.

Holler/Let Love Lead The Way
"Holler holler! Let you scream my name!" Victoria Beckham's ad-libs are probably the best thing about this slick but distinctly un-Spice Girls track, taken from from their final, Geri-less album Forever. As a quartet, the group opted to for a more US-friendly R&B approach, but it lacked the carefree spark of their previous efforts. The moment, it seemed, had passed. Still, it topped the Official Chart, bundled as a double A-side with Let Love Lead The Way, and places tenth on their best-sellers with 280,000 combined sales.

Sigh, they've reverted back to using a lower pure sales figure for Wannabe. They're so inconsistent with this and have been for years!

September 2017: 1,385,211 pure + 160,276 streaming = 1,545,488 total (OCC's Millionaires Article)
November 2018: 1,300,000 pure + 310,000 streaming = 1,610,000 total

1,545,488 total figure from Sep 2017 + approx 150,000 streaming sales achieved since then = 1,695,488. Presumably it would be over 1.7m with the pure sales it's achieved over the past 14 months.

705,000 - Too Much
460,000 - Stop
918,000 - Goodbye
54,000 - Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)

So overall we have...

Combined sales:

06/11/2018 - 1,610,000 - Wannabe (or probably 1,700,000+ if the higher pure sales were taken into account)
06/11/2018 - 1,216,000 - 2 Become 1
08/06/2018 - 1,011,199 - Say You'll Be There
01/11/2018 - 966,000 - Spice Up Your Life
01/11/2018 - 918,000 - Goodbye
06/11/2018 - 763,000 - Mama / Who Do You Think You Are
06/11/2018 - 726,000 - Viva Forever
01/11/2018 - 705,000 - Too Much
01/11/2018 - 460,000 - Stop
06/11/2018 - 280,000 - Holler / Let Love Lead The Way
01/11/2018 - 54,000 - Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)

Pure sales:

06/11/2018 - 1,140,000 - 2 Become 1
06/11/2018 - 965,300 - Say You'll Be There
06/11/2018 - 890,400 - Spice Up Your Life

Streaming sales:

06/11/2018 - 310,000 - Wannabe
06/11/2018 - 76,000 - 2 Become 1

Interesting titbit - Mama has sold 68,000 in its own right, separate from the Double A Side release. Scream at it having sold more than Headlines. kink.gif

Nice to see the full sales list, thanks for that!

SUYL easily going to become their 4th million seller (or whatever you want to call it) Wannabe could end up at 2 million units the way its going in 2-3 years, possibly sooner if it gets a big boost from the reunion.

I think Spice up your life and Goodbye could both make the million sellers (much longer for Goodbye to get there obviously). Wonder if SUYL might make it in 2019 with the reunion hype etc.

I don't get why they can't just give updated sales for every one of the songs, it's not like there are many to do them for Spice Girls have a tiny discography!

OCC can be quite stingy. sad.gif Sometimes they'll even only give away a specific part of a song's sales figure, i.e. only pure sales, or streaming, or downloads. drama.gif

One thing that has always irked me about UK charts/sales (and probably always will annoy me) is the secretive element of it, with OCC just giving scraps of info every now and then. It's just a bunch of numbers at the end of the day... and when it comes down to it, it's probably a niche number of people who are really interested in it. Doesn't seem like the OCC need to seek permission from labels or artists to reveal certain sales... so I wish they could just cut to the chase and make their database of sales accessible, maybe via a subscription.

I guess I'll keep dreaming...

Looking at the reception these last few days I think SUYL will become their 4th million seller pretty soon. I'm hoping Goodbye get's enough of a boost to eventually become their 5th!
