Chart Commentary

In one of the biggest clearouts my chart has seen, sixteen songs make way for a host of new entries, six of which appear in the top 10. Leading the way is Oscar Enestad, who replaces himself in the top 10 as previous #1 hit Sign of My Love dives 4-13 as a result of the craziness above it. New single I Love It is its replacement, fresh from its terrible result at Sweden's Melodifestivalen (last place in its heat mellow.gif). I Love It fares much better here; not only does it storm to #1, it's had the biggest weekly play count in at least the past two years. I don't keep track of my play counts religiously, but today marks a week since its release and it's on 176 plays already, easily my most played of 2019 (overtaking Sign of My Love) and quite possibly the biggest opening week for a track since Harry Styles' Sign of the Times in 2017. If not that, I'd guess we're going back to the double impact week of Fifth Harmony's Work From Home and Frans' If I Were Sorry. Of course, both Harry and Frans' songs ended up as my EOY #1s, so Oscar is in a crazy position right now.

I Love It is technically Oscar's fourth #1 single, following two with his former band FO&O, including their own Melodifestivalen entry Gottta Thing About You. As for the other members, Felix Sandman has amassed a small array of hits so far, achieving his sixth this week as MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY debuts at #19 after its video release. His Melfest entry EVERY SINGLE DAY is his biggest hit, peaking at #3 last year. Omar Rudberg hasn't charted with either of his singles, but it's his turn in Melfest tonight (Sat 16th), so we'll see if he can make any impact with this new song.

For a while it seemed like 5 Seconds of Summer wouldn't ever make #1 in my chart. Before their third era arrived, the Australian quartet notched up eight top 10 hits, including two #2 hits and three #3s, but no #1. Want You Back changed things last year, with the Youngblood era's lead single finally reaching #1. The Chainsmokers on the other hand nabbed a #1 with their very first hit, in a time before the general public actually knew them. Erase, featuring Priyanka Chopra, hit #1 in early 2013 in my chart but they've not revisited the top spot. Together, perhaps The Chainsmokers and 5SOS would each claim their second #1 hit? The start of the week made that seem likely, but Oscar put paid to it and in the end it wasn't even a competition. Nevertheless, it's a twelfth top 10 for 5SOS and a fifth for The Chainsmokers, who achieve their highest position since Erase.

Greyson Chance has been one of the mainstays of my chart. His debut album Hold On 'Til the Night featured in my very first chart in the second-to-last week of 2011 (impressive considering it came out in mid 2011), and eventually peaked at #1 for four weeks in 2012. My fourth chart saw the debut of Running Away at #6 (note: it was only a top 10 at the time!). It didn't leave for 59 weeks, making it the second longest runner in my chart's history, a record that's unlikely to ever change. Since then, Greyson's scored a second #1 single with Sunshine & City Lights in late 2012, and has five top 10s to his name. However, despite scoring at least one new hit every year except 2013, Greyson's not had a top 10 since Hit & Run in late summer 2016. New single shut up. the lead single from his long-awaited sophomore album portraits, is new at #3 this week. Not only does it break the dry spell of top 10s, but it's his highest position since Sunshine & City Lights over six years ago!

Although it only had half the week to impact, Avril Lavigne's Dumb Blonde instantly charts at #4 this week, becoming her fifth top 10 hit and the third from her new album Head Above Water, which debuts at #3 in the album chart on only its day of release. Dumb Blonde features Nicki Minaj, who, despite being cancelled, notches up her fifth top 10 hit within the past year and her eighteenth overall.

The yearly Margaret hit is starting to become a pattern, as new single Tempo extends her tally of hits to four, each achieved in four separate, consecutive years. Cool Me Down kicked things off in 2016 after her failed attempt to represent home country Poland in Eurovision. It became a #5 hit, and was followed by #16 hit What You Do in 2016. Her latest two hits were attempts to represent Sweden in Eurovision instead - In My Cabana became her biggest hit to date last year (interestingly, it debuted in a chart that had a clearout on a similar level to this week's) by peaking at #4, while Tempo is a third top 5 hit.

Scoring a third top 10 hit just a few months after the second, yet almost seven years after her first, Marina's Handmade Heaven completes the set of new entries this week at #10. It's the lead single from Marina's LOVE + FEAR album, due out later this year, and follows her Clean Bandit collaboration Baby into the top 10. Baby remains her highest peaking track at #9. Her third album, Froot, produced no top 10 hits, while Electra Heart yielded #10 hit Primadonna.

Every song in this week's top 10 has actually made a very notable impact in one way or another. Alec Benjamin's Let Me Down Slowly only drops one place despite five new entries above it, thanks to me seeing him live in concert on Wednesday night. Lewis Capaldi lifts 9-7 with Someone You Loved thanks to its video boost taking full effect. Ariana Grande's 7 rings drops 2-8, but actually sees an impact from the release of her thank u, next album, which of course debuts at #1 on the album chart. This brings Ariana level with One Direction, Taylor Swift, Tom Odell and The Vamps to tie the record for the most album chart #1s, with four in total. New single break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored is new at #11, and album track bloodline debuts at #17.

All of this is at the expense of Ally Brooke, who dives 1-9 with debut solo single Low Key. This is a record for biggest drop from #1, beating the 1-7 drop of The Tide's Click My Fingers in 2016. The Tide managed to recover, back up to #4 the following week and #3 after that, but with another busy week incoming, it looks unlikely for Ally.

Biggest drops from #1
1-9 Ally Brooke feat. Tyga - Low Key (2019)
1-7 The Tide - Click My Fingers (2016)
1-6 Diana Vickers - Boy In Paris (2012)
1-6 Kristian Kostov - Beautiful Mess (2017)
1-6 Troye Sivan - Bloom (2018)
1-6 Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey - The Middle (2018)

Also this week:

- Why Don't We debut at #16 with Cold in LA. Expect that to climb very high next week, potentially dethroning Oscar even after his massive week this week.

- Billie Eilish climbs 21 places with bury a friend to score her second top 20 hit, following when the party's over which hit #13 last year.

- Samuel Daayata and Benjamin Rihan both shake off their one hit wonder tags with new singles Never Leave You Behind and Dizzy Talk respectively debuting, while Anna of the North also scores a second hit with new track Leaning on Myself.

- After his tragic death last week, Cadet's Advice finally debuts in my chart at #26. The Deno Driz collaboration had been a song I'd enjoyed for a little while, but I didn't download it and it didn't impact quite enough to chart before. RIP Cadet.

(well maybe not flopping but why put her at #1 if she’s gonna end up falling off the chart two weeks later)

literally four times as many entries in your top 40 than mine!
liking the Ariana, Cadet and David Guetta entries here. hopefully the Guetta one becomes a proper hit soon to make up for DLMA and Goodbye being big. Break Up is my fave of the Ari era so far too and Advice was a top 40 hit for me a few weeks ago.

Hello Joseph!
Holy cow! There are a lot of new entries in your chart, unbelievable!
Nice to see the debut for "Who Do You Love", the Ariana debuts, "Advice" (RIP), "Better When You're Gone" and "Mother Tongue"!
Also very happy to see "Bury A Friend" climb high and stick around in this busy chart!
Great chart!
