We usually have a separate thread for the actual Oscars so here it is! Red Carpet starts at 10pm UK time with the actual ceremony starting at 1am <3 It's meant to last 3 hours this year but yh I'm pretty sure it's going over that after the Oscars have had to reverse all their horrendous suggestions.

Is anyone else watching? What are you predicting? What are you hoping for?

My Hopes:

Picture: A Star Is Born
(Ranking: 1. ASIB, 2. Favourite, 3. Roma, 4. Klansman, 5. Green Book, 6. Black Panther, 7. Vice, 8. BoCrap) -> I so wish Beale Street/AQP got in over those dreadful last two films

Director: Spike Lee
(Ranking: 1. Lee, 2. Cuaron, 3. Lanthimos, 4. Pawlikowski, 5. McKay) -> I'd be here for any of them winning bar McKay

Actor: Bradley Cooper
(Ranking: 1. Cooper, 2. Bale, 3. Mortensen, 4. Dafoe, 5. Malek) -> Cooper is so far ahead of the rest of this line-up it's not even funny

Actress: Lady Gaga
(Ranking: 1. Gaga, 2. Colman, 3. McCarthy, 4. Aparicio, 5. Close) -> all five are fantastic, the strongest acting category by far

Supporting Actor: Richard E. Grant
(Ranking: 1. Grant, 2. Elliott, 3. Ali, 4. Driver, 5. Rockwell) -> the last two shouldn't be here

Supporting Actress: Rachel Weisz
(Ranking: 1. Weisz, 2. Stone, 3. King, 4. De Tavira, 5. Adams) -> the top 3 are legit neck and neck for me, I'd replace the other two with Blunt for AQP & Debicki for Widows anyday

Original Screenplay: The Favourite (2. Roma, 3. Green Book, 4. Vice)
Adapted Screenplay: Can You Ever Forgive Me (2. A Star Is Born, 3. BlacKkKlansman, 4. If Beale Street Could Talk) -> love all 4 though
Animation: The Incredibles 2 (2. Ralph Breaks The Internet, 3. Isle Of Dogs)
Foreign Language: Roma (2. Cold War)
Score: If Beale Street Could Talk (2. Mary Poppins Returns, 3. BlacKkKlansman, 4. Isle Of Dogs, 5. Black Panther) -> only IBSCT rly made an impact on me
Song: Shallow (bye to all the others but probs 2. the MPR one, 3. I'll Fight, 4. All The Stars)
Sound Editing: A Quiet Place (2. Roma, 3. Black Panther, 4. Bohemian Rhapsody)
Sound Mixing: A Star Is Born (2. Black Panther, 3. Roma, 4. Bohemian Rhapsody)
Production Design: The Favourite (2. Mary Poppins Returns, 3. Black Panther, 4. Roma)
Cinematography: A Star Is Born (2. The Favourite, 3. Cold War, 4. Roma) -> I utterly adore the cinematography of all four
Make Up & Hairstyling: Mary, Queen of Scots (2. Vice)
Costume Design: The Favourite (2. Black Panther, 3. Mary Poppins Returns)
Editing: The Favourite (2. BlacKkKlansman, 3. Vice, 4. BoCrap, 5. Green Book) -> urgh there were so many stronger options here. BoRhap's editing was meh and what even did GB have special about its editing to get in
Visual Effects: Solo (2. Avengers)

My personal winners tally:
A Star Is Born - 6
The Favourite - 5
Can You Ever Forgive Me - 2

A Quiet Place - 1
BlacKkKlansman - 1
If Beale Street Could Talk - 1
Mary, Queen of Scots - 1
Roma - 1
Solo: A Star Wars Story - 1
The Incredibles 2 - 1

And for fun, all acting performances ranked:
1. Lady Gaga - A Star Is Born
2. Bradley Cooper - A Star Is Born
3. Rachel Weisz - The Favourite
4. Olivia Colman - The Favourite
5. Emma Stone - The Favourite
6. Regina King - If Beale Street Could Talk
7. Richard E. Grant - Can You Ever Forgive Me
8. Sam Elliott - A Star Is Born

I'll certainly to see some good news for Roma when I wake up tomorrow, it's far and away the best film here, certainly deserving of Picture and Director, they have been throwing a curveball the last few years in comparison to Golden Globes and BAFTAs so I certainly hope that's not the case as bar The Favourite, I'm not sure I'd be happy with any more of these winning.

My other hopes are for A Quiet Place for Sound Editing and while I would love for Isle of Dogs to get something, it does look like Spider Man has the Animated one and it would be fully deserved, what a film *.* (doesn't seem to be a thread on here awww).

I've seen all the Best Picture noms for this year so my final ranking and thoughts:

01. Roma (Said it all already wub.gif)

02. The Favourite (I did rlly enjoy this, wonderfully eccentric and pretty hilarious, ofc. it's mainly down to the three leads who are all bloody fantastic. Certainly quite different and more accessible from Yorgos' other films, but I'd welcome him getting the recognition)

03. BlacKkKlansman (Very enjoyable and did succeed in being very thought provoking measuring this up to recent events. Had a few tonal shifts, but a very interesting story to tell)

04. A Star is Born (Already posted my thoughts on this, not perfect by any means and more than a few pacing issues, but still brilliantly acted and a great soundtrack for the most part. Deserves Best Original Song for Shallow for sure)

05. Vice (This is...interesting, I can see why it's so divisive. I think what made it enjoyable was McKay's directing style, it's really unique and endearing, albeit this was a hell of a lot messier than The Big Short and tonally, it was all over the place. Bale is fantastic as is Adams (but this clearly still isn't her year :'(), but there was something missing).

06. Black Panther (I did enjoy this, but the more I think about it, the more I'm annoyed that this will forever be remembered as the first superhero movie to be nominated for this award. It is very good for representations and has a relevant political subtext, but it doesn't advance the genre in any way like The Dark Knight did, it's just a standard Marvel film at heart, which isn't bad by any means, but Best Picture worthy? Nah, should've been Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse)

07. Green Book (I think of all the movies I've seen, this screams 'Oscar bait' the most. It's almost hilarious how predictable and how many cliches it has, Just the concept of a prejudiced dumb white man and an intelligent cultured black man in 1960s Southern America driving together surely tells you EVERYTHING that's gonna happen already?! Mahershala Ali was great and had an interesting character, but it was just so unremarkable).

08. Bohemian Rhapsody (I do kind of understand the backlash, never mind what happened with the director, someone as great as Freddie Mercury deserved a much deeper and more thought provoking biopic than a generic crowd pleaser. By no means Best Picture worthy, Rami Malek is rlly good but the only scene I was wowed by was the end reenactment of the Live Aid set, otherwise this editing really wasn't up to scratch much!)

I do hope they don't go for very obvious crowd pleasing next time, sadly I feel Bohemian Rhapsody may win quite a few :/

I’ve only managed six of the eight Best Picture nominees this year (missing “Black Panther” because Marvel is such a mixed bag for me and I never got round to it, and “Roma” because long runtime + a lot of people saying how slow it is has put me off), but out of those I have seen, my favourite two were Chez’s bottom two :’) But taking all the major categories into consideration, “The Wife” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” are my overall favourite two of this Oscar season.

I find it interesting that you say “The Favourite” is more accessible than Yorgos’ previous two English language movies. I think the box office performance and awards success speak for themselves that it’s true...but for me, I enjoyed the other two more.

I’ll be very happy if Glenn Close wins, and delighted if Richard E Grant can surprise. But I’m not as invested in the Oscars this year as I think it’s a weaker line-up with none of the Best Pic nominees as good as Three Billboards, The Shape of Water or Call Me By Your Name.

I'd watch it if it wasn't so late for us, and I didn't have school in the morning laugh.gif

Really want I2 to win Best Animated Film though, I didn't think much of Spiderverse.

Glenn to win, that’s my only concern tonight. She’s been better before but she’s far and away the best in the category.

You can get a 14 day free trial for Sky Cinema at the moment if that works for you? That's my plan for tonight sorted anyway <3

Been looking at a few of the secret Oscar ballots online and Richard E. Grant seems surprisingly popular with the voters, I'd love for him to pull off an upset especially (Can You Ever Forgive Me? deserves way more nominations too sad.gif)

My predictions:
Film - Judging by the last 2 years, the favourite didn't win, So, I'm thinking Rome won't win. So, I'm guessing The Favourite or Bohemian Rhapsody
Actress- Glenn Close - I would bet millions of pounds on her.
Actor - Rami Malek cheer.gif
Director - Cuaron (Roma)
