A darkly comedic drama detailing the lives of three women living in three different decades: a housewife in the 60s, a socialite in the 80s, and a lawyer in 2019, each dealing with infidelity in their marriages.

This is honestly my new favourite thing, it has Ginnifer Goodwin, Lucy Liu and Kirby Howell-Babtiste as the three leads plus its created by the same guy that did Desperate Housewives so I knew it was going to be good.

There's only 6 episodes out as of today but it's currently airing in CBS in America (don't think it's out elsewhere yet) but i watched all of them today. The more you watch it the more you realise it's not as predictable as you think it's going to be. It's very much set up as though the women are gonna kill their husbands for cheating, i figured the season just followed how they got to that point or how they get away with it (if they do) but 6 episodes in and nobody has been killed yet and things are becoming more complex to the point I don't even think it is a classic story of one spouse killing the other.

You have Beth (Ginnifer) who's the 60s housewife, spends her days taking care of her husband etc then finds out he's having an affair with a diner waitress. Beth befriends said waitress rather than confronting her husband Rob to get intel and convince her to stop the affair but things get complicated, we understand why Rob is cheating a bit more and also that the waitress isn't the enemy like she thought.

In the 1980s we have Simone (Lucy) who's the socialite, very concerned about her reputation and flaunting her extravagance etc. She's married to Karl (her 3rd husband) who she finds out is gay and has been having affairs with various men, despite being married to her for 10 years. She ends up having an affair of her own with her best friend's 18 year old son shortly after finding out about her husband, so things get complicated there too.

and then in the present we have Taylor (Kirby) the feminist lawyer who's also bisexual, polyamorous and in an open relationship with her husband Eli. She has also been seeing Jade for 6 months and circumstances then cause Jade to move in with Taylor and Eli on a temporary basis that soon changes to a more permanent one as they become an official thruple. Things get messy here too as Eli begins to hide things from Taylor and as he and Jade get closer, Taylor starts having doubts about their arrangement.

i'm gonna do another wee post with my more personal thoughts

Firstly, Ginnifer is the perfect casting for Beth and i love her more each episode. Initially i thought she was a bit 2D but that really is the whole point as she really believes her entire purpose is to dote on her husband but when she begins to think about what life would be like without him, you start to see more personality to her and what she cares about. Currently, i think she wants to work on her marriage with Rob and face what they've been through so I can't see her murdering him even though he is a bit of a knob still. In episode 6 we meet her neighbour who is in an abusive marriage and Beth tries to do right by her at the housewarming party so i think she could end up killing her neighbours husband to protect her.

Lucy really does steal the show, the humour she brings to it, especially how she bounces of Karl - you almost don't want them to get a divorce kink.gif My theory here is that maybe she fakes Karls death so he can run off with the guy he's in love with. I think Simone and Karl really do love each other but know its not in the way they both need so it makes sense that she'd want him happy rather than being dead but being a widow is better for her reputation than have everyone know her husband left her for a man seemingly, to her.

I really thought Taylor would be my favourite character because the strong, queer, feminist types usually are but she's kinda irritating as she seems to find issue in everything, even the things she wanted. Eli is my least favourite character as well but i dont see Taylor killing him either. The only theory I can come up with is Jade is actually a psycho and she kills him for maybe getting between her and Taylor or he's not giving her enough attention who knows? or maybe she kills Taylor after she falls in love with Eli but she knows she can't be with him solely while Taylor is still around?? but surely Taylors gotta be the murderer but im not sure how laugh.gif

i really do love the twists in it though and the characters are all so layered and interesting, perfectly casted and the premise of it being set in different time periods is really clever too and provides some stunning visuals. I really am a fan on all levels tbh

These plotlines are really going in with the theme that humans are an innately problematic species huh

i know that's what put me off for ages as its been on since mid august but it's really good so it's worth the hassle of trying to find a link etc

I'm really surprised there's not even a UK air date for it because it seems like something that would do well on mainstream tv here. it would be perfect on netflix as well mind you. im pretty sure its been renewed for a 2nd season so maybe with some luck we'll get it over here at somepoint!
