Not sure if this is the correct thread or not but Lindsay Hoyle is the new speaker.

It's Lindsay Hoyle!
Happy with the new Speaker? Sad to see John Bercow go? Any other thoughts? |

Good riddance to Bercow. Worst biased speaker ever.
![]() In his acceptance speech he mentioned the sadness of his daughter committing suicide aged just 28, in December 2017. ![]() This post has been edited by Freddie Kruger: Nov 5 2019, 12:40 AM |

From what I've seen of Lindsey, he'll make a decent speaker. He's had years of experience as a deputy, and is respected among members throughout the house, even receiving many votes from the Conservatives. I imagine he won't make himself centre-stage to the same extent John Bercow did.
The issue I do have, and it is one that goes back a while, is the procotol that the Speaker still represents a constituency in parliament. It feels to me unfair to his constituents that they won't get represented in parliament, as he has to remain neutral, and given the convention that the major parties don't run candidates against the Speaker in elections, it seems as if they won't have any until he leaves the post. If I could make a change, I would make it that on the election of a Speaker, that person ceases to be an MP for that constituency, and a by-election should take place to elect a new MP for that area. |

Yes I agree. Upon election the Speaker should resign his seat but still receive the same salary as an elected MP.

Sad to lose Bercow, he was a most effective Speaker, both in fairness and attracting attention to Parliamentary proceedings that wouldn't have otherwise been noted. Best MP perhaps ever for making political talk interesting to the mainstream.
Hoyle seems like an okay replacement, I reckon his will be a different voice. Perhaps a little quieter. We can only hope that his promise to stand up for backbenchers is kept, and he continues to hold the government to account when it is necessary. |

personal dislike is neither here nor there unless they are upset he held the government to account, which they are, he adhered to Parliamentary law and challenged the executive when it was necessary, let them do what they wanted when it was not. In any case a Speaker that will challenge a government when it oversteps its bounds is entirely necessary and should it be required of Hoyle I would hope and expect him to do as Bercow did.

Fairness? ![]() Bercow did what a speaker is supposed to do. The reason they didn't like him(and I suspect the reason that you didn't like him) is the fact that he saw through the attempts to circumvent and manipulate democracy when it came Brexit. He was impartial - what you actually want is an ardent Brexiteer. Thats not how being the speaker works. |

He let the fact that he's a Remainer affect his judgement and decisions in his job though and that's wrong. He tried to frustrate Brexit. |

His "opinions" are what the papers tell him to think. |

Oh and for your information I very rarely read a newspaper. Never buy one but sometimes look online but some are behind paywalls now.

Fairness? ![]() Leadsom and Boris? Two of the most rotten human beings in existence? I won't lose sleep over what they have to say about anything, thanks. I for one will miss Bercow as speaker. He's one hell of a character and like others pointed out, he did what he was supposed to in terms of holding the government to account. I know integrity means nothing to you but still. |
