I think it could be too early for it to be aired - I might be wrong but I'm sure there's a rule that movies must be something like two years old to premiere on BBC/ITV.

It’s the premiere on Sky Cinema on Christmas Day with Avengers: Endgame on Boxing Day.

That Christmas Day line-up for BBC One really is depressing besides the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special.

Not a rule I don't think (as sometimes independent and smaller films air very quickly on ITV and BBC) - but I think that studios don't want to sell the TV rights straight away to free channels.

Both channels really need to rethink their Christmas Day schedules - they're so stale and the overnight ratings have been dire the past couple of years. Do the BBC really need to air one and half hours of Call the Midwife? That's such a slog. Break it down or move it to another day. The Gavin and Stacey special is probably the most exciting offering they've had for years and it's bound to be the highest rated programme by far - broadcasters should take note!

Perhaps that's what it is, it usually works out at around 2 years though.

I hadn't seen the ITV one - that looks just as bad. laugh.gif

They really do need to rethink and have a major overhaul though, you're right. Call the Midwife seems to just land a primetime spot because it once was a major 'thing' for the BBC. I don't know if it's just me being a massive Doctor Who fan too though, but the schedule just looks so bland and dull without that in there too. A line-up of Doctor Who, Gavin & Stacey, Eastenders, Call the Midwife, etc would probably seem a lot more attractive. New Year's Day seems to be the day for showcasing the best on offer now.

The ITV schedule for the Christmas period is woeful...wholly reliant on the soaps and quiz shows. They've really stopped bothering now.

The BBC has made a little more effort but it's just the same old really aside from the Gavin & Stacey special.

Tbf I did applaud the BBC for moving Doctor Who out of the Christmas Day spot as I thought it could free up a space for fresh programming but evidently not. I don't see why the BBC couldn't at least try having their book adaptions conclude on Christmas Day - there seems to be a bit of hype for A Christmas Carol this year and the Agatha Christie's have always performed well.

I would suggest investing in some good quality comedy but when the likes of Mrs Brown's Boys are a fixture on the Christmas schedules, I'd rather they didn't.

It looks like the planned Agatha Christie adaptation for this year has been delayed into 2020, which is why Boxing Day is looking a little weak with them relying on just EE and Would I Lie To You in the 9pm hour where that would normally air.

It seems The Trial of Christine Keeler (about the Profumo affair) will be beginning on Sunday 29 / Monday 30 December. So at least we have some new drama to look forward to aside from A Christmas Carol over the fortnight!

I’ve said it for years now that BBC One really need to refresh their Christmas Day schedule! It’s the same thing year in year out in the exact same scheduling order, the only thing different this year is Gavin & Stacey which will no doubt be the highest rating of the night showing people want something different! (See Michael McIntyre last year) I don’t know how they can be surprised with ever decreasing ratings when it’s just the same thing cut and pasted!!

ITV put in lots of effort a few years ago but didn’t get above 2m or something each night so they just truly have given up and do it on the cheap but with reliable programming like Harry Potter films, soaps and quiz shows laugh.gif
