29th December 2019

It's Sparks up to the top slot for the final chart of the decade, the brotherly duo getting a second number one 45 years and 7 months since getting This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us to 1 on debut. The boys have been consistently good over the years since but have never peaked higher than 2 in the interim, and with Please Don't F**k Up My World (a sentiment that applies in more than one sense) they finally get that deserved elusive 2nd chart-topper, which gives them the biggest gap between number ones with new material by quite a few years, and also the longest stretch of chart-toppers in my chart by virtue of no-one who topped my chart between 1968 and 1974 having topped my chart in the last 6 years. Granted very few of them are still active! Sparks are though, i saw them supporting Beck the other year and fab they still were with then-new album Hippopotamus.

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons finally go top 10 with The Night 47 years late, having missed out in 1975 as a belated Northern Soul reissued smash, Harry Styles make it a 3rd top 10 in a row in 4 months - that's just greedy! Pet Shop Boys keep their top 10 run of official singles intact with Burning The Heather as B side Decide enters at 60. I think only 2 official singles have failed to make my top 10. Probably. One day I'll check when I get my 20th century charts on spreadsheets finally done.

Highest new entry at 18 is another good single from the late Avicii, Fades Away, with great vocal support from Mishcatt, Kim Wilde enters the top 20 with Hope as another of hers exits from the Winter Songbook album, and in at 39, one of Rod Stewart's great songs, done over by the RPO - The Killing Of Georgie was a groundbreaking song in 1976, and was based on the murder of a gay friend, making it the first overtly gay-supporting hit record. Sir Rod, like all his best records, wrote it himself. We had previously had My Girl Bill in 1974, which got Rod's bestie Elton all excited when he reviewed it for Record Mirror - till writer Jim Stafford sneakily stuck a comma in at the end and dashed expectations, cos she's my girl, Bill. Incidentally, I have a bone to pick with Elton - here I am thinking I've possibly got the longest-running personal chart in the world and he goes and announces he still does his own charts too, and must have started long before I did! Outrageous. Publish them Elton!

Down at t'other end of the chart, Kim Wilde gets another track in, Coldplay get a 3rd off the new album, and Travis return for the first time in 6 years and increase their span of entries to 22 years. And that was the 2010's that was. I now have 5 complete decades of charts, hope to compile my Top 100 of 2019, the 2010's and the 21st Century, before long....

Hi John!

Giving your #1 a listen now - obviously the language isn't my thing but it is a well put together song with the choir and all!

Nice to see Adore You fly into your Top 10 - it's not hit my chart yet but could do as it's a refreshingly good song.

A big climb for Billie also - it's not one of my favourites but still one of the better songs in the chart right now.

Great chart biggrin.gif

Hello John!
Nice to see "Adore You" climbing into the top 10, as well as the huge gain for "Everything I Wanted"!
As for your debuts, I like "Fades Away" and "Everyday Life", I still need to hear the other songs.
Great chart!

Hi Pete smile.gif I'm not generally a fan of the F word in songs either as it's usually gratuitous and pointless, but if it's central to the point of the song I'm OK with it, so two songs using it in the title (guaranteed no airplay as you can't really bleep them out) have topped my chart - this one and Two F*x the the other year from Adam Lambert! ohmy.gif laugh.gif

Harry Styles is making music well-above my expectations of quality, 3 in 3 months and Ive yet to hear the album! Even an understated Billie Eilish is going to better than half the stuff in the charts. Actually she could just chant something off the top of her head and it'd better than some laugh.gif

Cheers!
