03. Eleanor Rigby (1966) / Revolver
07/18 votes

In a very closely fought battle between all three songs (the votes were split 7 / 6 / 5!) it is 'Eleanor Rigby' that receives the bronze medal. This song was part of the group's album 'Revolver' which featured music that was becoming increasingly more experimental. 'Eleanor Rigby' was released as a double A-side with 'Yellow Submarine'. The pair of songs peaked at #1 in the U.K. and stayed there for 4 weeks. However, in the U.S. 'Eleanor Rigby' had to settle for #11 while 'Yellow Submarine' peaked at #2. This single was a very unconventional move for a pop band like The Beatles, as the subject matter is rather depressing and sonically it's just as gloomy. The song is about loneliness and death, with the lyrics even stating that the titular character was "buried along with her name" - haunting for sure. 'Eleanor Rigby' is very string-heavy sonically as a double string quartet featuring violins, cellos and violas took the reins fro this song. The arrangement was courtesy of George Martin, who also continued this classical theme for part of the 'Yellow Submarine' soundtrack. 'Eleanor Rigby' is sung by Paul. He claims to have written around 80% of the song too. One lyric that was changed however was "Father McCartney" to "Father McKenzie" as he didn't want people thinking that he was talking about his dad. The title of the song was not actually inspired by a real person, instead married together from actress Eleanor Bron (who starred in the Beatles film Help!) and a shop that contained the word 'Rigby'. Paul felt that the two linked together quite naturally. Later, in the 1980s, a grave of a real person called Eleanor Rigby was discovered in Liverpool. Time is now up for this chilling release. That means it's just 'Yesterday' and 'Hey Jude' left to battle for this survivor crown. But which song will win? Please vote for your LEAST FAVOURITE of the two songs!

'Eleanor Rigby' was my favourite song of the entire survivor so of course I was rooting for that to win. I'm really impressed that it did as well as 3rd though so I can't complain! It was definitely one of the songs that turned me into a big fan of The Beatles. The 'Revolver' album in general is so brilliant <3

Voted for 'Yesterday' as my least favourite. C'mon 'Hey Jude'!

That's a pretty good top two we're left with! Gone for Hey Jude here, would love to see an unexpected Yesterday win!

Nooo, Eleanor Rigby should've won sad.gif It's such a beautifully written and composed song, so sad and dark and still holds so much meaning.

I guess I'll root for Yesterday to win now, another lyrical genius - Scrambled eggs, Oh my baby how I love your legs kink.gif

Eleanor Rigby was the best of the three remaining songs. I voted for Hey Jude as my least favourite of the last two. Yesterday to win please.

Well this has been a fantastic Survivor almost all the way through, culminating in what I'd consider my personal top 2 from this album so well done everyone!

Love both of these so so much but I'm just gonna give Hey Jude the edge so voted for Yesterday. But honestly thrilled with either winning.

I think Hey Jude is a little overrated so I voted for that again.

As obvious a choice as it is I'm pretty sure 'Hey Jude' would probably rank as my favourite Beatles song (and certainly my favourite from '1' at least) so that to win! Happy that 'Eleanor Rigby' made the top 3, I'd probably have expected that to go slightly sooner.
