Jessica Harrington has been forced to rule out Sizing John from Sunday's Irish Gold Cup and the rest of the season after the 2017 Gold Cup winner suffered an injury in his final piece of fast work on Tuesday morning on the Curragh.

Sizing John had been on track to make his return to fences in the Paddy Power-sponsored Leopardstown showpiece for which he was a general 14-1 shot, less than a month after falling on his first start for over two years in a hurdle race at Punchestown.

Jockey Tom Marquand has been taken to hospital for further assessment after falling heavily from Ronstar at Randwick.

After starting the day on a high with a Group 3 double on Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained juveniles Away Game and Prague, Marquand's luck took a turn for the worse.

He hit the ground heavily when Ronstar clipped heels near the 800 metres in Saturday's Ranvet Handicap (1,400m), the horse suffering a fatal injury.

Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer Robert Alner has died aged 76.

Alner triumphed with Cool Dawn in 1998 and trained several other leading steeplechasers - including Sir Rembrandt, The Listener and Kingscliff - in a distinguished career.

He was seriously injured in a car crash in 2007, which left him paralysed and in need of a wheelchair.
