15th March 2020
It's 3 weeks on top for the Barry White 1973 track that takes me back to much-less-stressed times, holding off James Blunt and Ward Thomas from the top spot, the highest-charting of the singles off the new album, poor ol' James has never quite managed to top my chart, though this is his 5th top 5 and beats his previous peak of 3 for Wisemen in 2006, a track that went top 5 in 2005 as well. Doja Cat and Marina Kaye both get top 10 debuts, SZA gets her 2nd since topping with the Black Panther track with Kendrick Lamarr, All The Stars, in 2018. Justin T gets his 12th top 10, but much more with contributions to other artists and N'Sync tracks. Roisin Murphy gets 2 top 40's in a row, both with 8-minute-plus disco-era-styled boogies, Halsey does that too with much shorter tracks that have no disco-boogies in sight, and Noel Gallagher yet again gets 2 simultaneous top 40 new songs on the list, they just overlap with the frequency of releases recently. Against all the odds, and I never expected to write this sentence, Celine Dion continues her comeback artistically with another good top 40 off the new album. She's had at least 15 top 40's over the last 30 years, but very few top 10's - just 4, peaking at 2 in 2002 with A New Day has Come. New entries from The Killers urging Caution, extending their run to 16 years, Ava Max getting a 3rd chart entry, Neil Young bringing his fab 1992 Harvest Moon ballad back after selling on itunes due to some sort of advert promo, I expect, and last, but not least, Sparks follow-up their Christmas chart-topper with the whimsical I'm Toast, making it 46 years of non-stop quality, paving their own unique path through whatever music scenes are around, always relevant, always cool, always inventive lyrically and musically, touring, and occasionally selling albums and singles. The titles of tracks on the forthcoming album make it worth buying already...! 1 1 1 6 I’M GONNA LOVE YOU JUST A LITTLE MORE BABY Barry White 704000 2 7 2 6 HALFWAY James Blunt featuring Ward Thomas 264700 3 3 1 6 TEARS OF GOLD Faouzia 646000 4 4 4 7 YOU ARE THE ONE Pet Shop Boys 286750 5 12 5 3 SAY SO Doja Cat 101600 6 2 2 3 DRIVER’S SEAT Sniff ‘n’ The Tears 205000 7 19 7 3 THE WHOLE 9 Marina Kaye 78100 8 9 8 7 PHYSICAL Dua Lipa 168050 9 6 1 15 BLINDING LIGHTS The Weeknd 1271600 10 25 10 3 THE OTHER SIDE SZA, Justin Timberlake 67550 11 5 3 7 THERAPY Duke Dumont featuring Sharlene Hector 400500 12 18 12 4 BROKEN SLEEP Agnes Obel 88100 13 8 4 8 WILL O’THE WISP Pet Shop Boys 383750 14 14 14 6 ROSES Adam Lambert & Nile Rodgers 136000 15 10 5 8 AND IT’S STILL ALRIGHT Nathaniel Rateliff 315400 16 16 16 8 LONELY Joel Corry featuring HARLEE 145650 17 11 1 12 FADES AWAY Avicii featuring Mishcatt 1075000 18 15 3 8 FOREVER Will Young 363000 19 24 19 4 MODERN LONELINESS Lauv 68500 20 23 20 4 CUZ I LOVE YOU Lizzo 69950 21 17 17 6 IN MY ARMS Purple Disco Machine featuring Inner Life & Jocelyn Brown, with Al Stewart 100600 22 13 6 8 MAKE IT TO HEAVEN David Guetta & MORTEN with Raye 263300 23 20 20 5 NO TIME TO DIE Billie Eilish 93500 24 26 24 6 REACT Pussycat Dolls 92400 25 28 25 5 KNOW YOUR WORTH Khalid & Disclosure 58450 26 29 26 5 ONE OF A KIND Ronan Keating & Emeli Sande 71300 27 32 27 4 SIX DAYS IN JUNE The Fratellis 54100 28 36 28 4 WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU The Avalanches featuring Blood Orange 63700 29 30 29 7 WINNING WAYS The Fizz 105350 30 35 30 4 GREAT UNKNOWN X Ambassadors 64000 31 27 9 10 THE WORLD WE LEFT BEHIND The Fizz 255500 32 21 5 9 KISS SOMEBODY Julie Bergan with Seeb 379250 33 38 33 4 INSTANT DESTINY Tame Impala 54000 34 37 34 6 REASONS I DRINK Alanis Morrissette 83900 35 48 35 2 MURPHY’S LAW Roisin Murphy 29800 36 22 15 7 BLUE MOON RISING Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds 125100 37 43 37 3 YOU SHOULD BE SAD Halsey 37200 38 68 38 3 COME ON OUTSIDE Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds 29800 39 53 39 4 CHANGE MY MIND Celine Dion 46550 40 52 40 2 DEAD WEIGHT PVRIS 28500 41 44 41 5 LA VIE EN ROSE Louis Armstrong 51600 42 31 6 11 OFFLINE Friendly Fires & Friend Within 283450 43 34 4 11 MONKEY BUSINESS (RADIO EDIT) Pet Shop Boys 423600 44 75 44 2 LOST AT SEA Cashier No.9 18250 45 55 45 6 BETTER OFF WITHOUT YOU Becky Hill featuring Shift K3Y 52100 46 57 46 2 GASLIGHTER Dixie Chicks 23150 47 33 17 9 JULY Noah Cyrus & Leon Bridges 161200 48 65 48 3 MISTAKES Jonas Blue & Paloma Faith 24700 49 58 49 2 ALL OF THE FEELINGS Kiesza 22300 50 39 12 8 ALL MY LOVE Jeff Lynne’s ELO 185450 51 40 8 9 THE VOID Muse 246300 52 41 9 9 OH YEAH! Was surprised when you said it was disco that the Roisin Murphy track is not a cover of the similarly named disco hit by Cheri from 1982 (which I recently discovered and is great) but its a bit reminiscent of it in style.
You Should be Sad is great, its a bit 80s soft rock anthem reminiscent I think with its big production. This post has been edited by The S***e: 17th March 2020, 02:12 PM |

Hi Snakey, Surprised you know that Murphy's Law from the 80's - I do recall it but havent heard it in decades! Playing it now, sounding good actually Roisin is prob talking about her own law, being a Murphy herself Halsey is getting more interesting as she goes on. Thanks for commenting! |

Hi Sven Glad you still loving Bazza on top Sorry about Roses stood still (and again this week), the ones above it just wont budge Purple Disco Machine is fab but it's a tad internally repetitious so it dropped a bit sooner than it would have if it had had a bigger "drop" (or bridge as we used to say) or something hooky to mix it up a bit more |
