Welcome to the Week 7 quiz, which really is: to guess the songs that have been at the most different chart positions!
Entrants: M4NGO, chrissmith276, Scene, LewisGT, Jade, coi, Riser, Rush, MrAndrewMan, dan-G, StoneDragon I’ve no idea how this is going to go as a quiz, but I had these lists already compiled as I’d not seen them anywhere else, and rather than just post them I thought I’d let you work them out from a few clues. It’s certainly a very different concept to the other quizzes in this series, but I’ll only be able to run this once, so I hope you’ll enjoy it and find it about the right level of challenge! Just excuse my attempt to explain the rules concisely Part 1: 12 songs with most positions held in the UK Singles Top 40 The first part is to name the 12 songs (as there’s a tie for 10th place) which have visited the most positions in the Top 40. I’ve given the 3 of them which were released before 1970, leaving 9 for you to guess (answers A-I) all of which have featured prominently in the charts since 1999. For each of Songs A-I, I’ve given the number of positions each has held in the Top 40, and also, in descending order, which of those positions were within the Top 8, at any time, in any order, and for any number of weeks at each. For example, SAINt JHN - Roses had a Top 8 chart run of: 8-7-4-2-2-1-1-2-3-2-3-3 so it would appear here as: 1-4, 7-8... (i.e. each of positions 1-4 and 7-8). Part 2: 10 songs with most positions held in the UK Singles Top 100 The second part is to name the 10 songs which have visited the most positions in the Top 100. 6 of them didn’t appear in Songs A-I, so they are for you to guess (answers J-O) but here I’ve only given the number of positions each song held in the Top 8, and if there were any, what the peak position was. So, to use the same example as above, Roses held 6 positions in the Top 8 and peaked at #1. Again, all these songs have featured prominently in the charts since 1999. For two of these (Songs J-K), I’ve given the number of positions they held in the Top 100, but for the others (Songs L-O), three are tied on 63 positions, while the other holds the record for visiting the most ever - see if you can guess how many positions (answer P) and which song from L-O (answer Q). Then see if you can guess which 4 songs from the first part (i.e. Songs A-I) appear again in this part since they also visited 61 or more positions in the Top 100, and in which order (answers R-U). So that’s 21 answers altogether (A-U), with 2 points available for each question. I’ve explained the scoring in the original post. For answers A-O, you only need the song title - the artist is optional - while for Q-U, you only need the song reference from the earlier questions. As a final question just for fun (answer Z), let me know your favourite song out of all your earlier answers. There aren’t any points for this but I’ll tally them up with the results. As a disclaimer, all the statistics on which this quiz are based have been double checked and are correct as at the chart week the quiz opened (w/e 14/05/2020, so this week’s chart won’t count towards any answers), based on the UK Singles Chart through history from 1952 as published on the OCC website. I’ve combined chart runs listed separately which are for the same song, for example there are 4 separate listings for Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day which I’ve counted as one song, however the versions of Do They Know It’s Christmas by each of the different Band Aids are not combined. Best of luck - please PM me your answers (marked A-U and Z) by Sunday 17 May, at 13:00 BST. If you’ve got any queries on any of this, feel free to post them below. Happy quizzing! Very original concept for a quiz. This is definitely going to be a challenge but a good one. On a quick glance I already have one answer but the less said about that the better.

A challenging quiz! I’m really gonna have to think on this one im pretty good with peaks but remembering chart runs isn’t a strong point of mine unless I Stan the artist.

Strange idea for a quiz I have to say but I've got my head around it now! Have identified a few of the songs I think, will give it a proper go later.

This is very complicated, but interesting and props for the effort.
My question is: is this meant as purely a memory game, or is some level of research allowed? Like, if I think of a song that might be a possibility, can I search it on Polyhex/the OCC site to see how many positions it ticked off, or should I just guess? I'm not sure which is your intention because I feel like if you can research, it's too easy, but from memory, it's just pure luck if you happen to think of something correct |

Thanks for the comments. If you're struggling with where to start, it probably helps to do this in stages, so try to think of songs that stayed in the chart for ages, and then whether any of them might fit for the first 9 songs A-I, or otherwise the next 6. Even if you put the 15 songs in any order you'll get 1 point for each if they're one of the correct answers. And then go on to the last 10 questions from there, if you want. But please do answer question Z at least
This doesn't really affect the quiz, but the original numbers of Top 100 positions I put for S, T and U were all out by 1 - sorry about that, I have amended above but the order is the same. Thanks to the entrant who pointed this out to me! |

I've decided to remove questions V to Y from the quiz as they were adding too much confusion - I'll explain fully when I do the results. This doesn't affect the standings for anyone who's already entered (really sorry for going to the effort of answering them though).
So the quiz is now 21 questions (in the words of 50 Cent), plus the all important question Z. I've tidied up the original and rules posts which I hope are now that little bit easier to follow. |
