This thread was already run here few years ago by Ne Plus Ultra but I wanted to reactivate it for some time now. I think this chart is worth posting on here as it's a good indicator of potential future hits gaining in popularity as well as older songs that might enjoy streaming/iTunes boost. At least I find it interesting. I'll try to post daily top 40 updates.
Unlike the iTunes chart or streaming services charts Shazam chart covers the last 7 days instead of 24 hours. - You can check out and download the full UK top 200 as well as other regional charts and global chart here on the Shazam website: https://www.shazam.com/charts/top-200/united-kingdom - Or even the top 1000 here: https://kworb.net/charts/shazam/uk.html ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by Tefo: Oct 12 2020, 10:02 AM |

It is interesting to see the charts but a couple of observations. Why do people shazam a certain song? Is it mainly because they don't know the title or singer. So does that mean the songs in the list aren't memorable enough to stick in the memory, or aren't distinguishable. If you have sought out the tune yourself you already know what it is.
Also, it probably reflects which are played on radio or tv shows. |

Lots of fan campaigns for Shazam - they believe it helps get a song playlisted or supported by streaming services? I haven’t used it for at least 5+ years and didn’t realise it had any kind of impact anywhere?

I decided to post top 50 instead of just top 40. I edited previous posts and added positions 41-50.

I agree that this chart's nature is specific. It doesn't measure music consumption unlike streaming/download charts. Does it measure popularity? Well, people shazam songs they don't know or the ones they've heard before but don't know the title/artist. If something is unknown it can't be popular, that's quite obvious. To some degree it definitely measures what is being played on the radio/television/in shops/restaurants/clubs etc. But I think the most fitting definition is that it measures music discovery. So how many people discovered the song and might become its future consumers via streaming or iTunes. But of course it measures only some part of 'music discovery market' - songs that were discovered beacause they were played somewhere. We have to remember that people nowadays are also finding new music in many other ways through streaming services and the internet.

I can't believe Shazam is still going it felt like it blew up 5/6 years ago and people were 'shazaming' everything but I don't know of anyone or hear anyone talk about it now.
I wonder how many daily users it actually has? |

I wonder how many daily users it actually has? According to sources on the internet songs are being shazamed 20 million times every day. Though I'm not sure how accurate this figure is. In 2018 Shazam had 478 million active users which was 20% more than in 2017. Most popular songs of the year have millions of shazams globally e.g. Blinding Lights was shazamed 16,6 million times so far, Head & Heart 2,8 million times, Mood 1,6 million, Midnight Sky 1,2 million. Others have thousands of shazams e.g. Tick Tock has 716k, Looking for Me 621k, Ain't It Different 425k. Even less popular songs have few thousands: Better Than This by Paloma Faith has 37k, Dream On Me by Ella Henderson already has 7,7k. I'm not saying these are crazy big numbers but they definitely mean people are still using it. |

I'm amazed that people think Shazam had gone away. I use it regularly when I'm watching tv - maybe twice a week, there would be a piece of music used that I'd like to identify. I think it may be an older demographic that uses it. I've used it in the gym too.

When clubs and festivals were a thing I used Shazam a lot to discover new music, I still use it a lot when I'm shopping and hear something interesting at the store.

Apple bought Shazam a few years ago, and I don't think they've as actively promoted it as before. It was suggested they did so as a spoiler for Spotify - before the takeover Shazam would send its users to Spotify to listen further, and now it sends its users to Apple Music.

I think people will always use Shazam because the need to identify unknown songs is something that will always be relevant.

I still use it all the time (via Siri).. mainly when I hear something I don't recognise on the TV or if it's a remix of a song I know. It's pretty clever. It sometimes even manages to pick up songs playing on the background in EastEnders..
I believe Radio 1 use it as one of the metrics to decide whether to playlist something This post has been edited by AcerBen: Oct 13 2020, 01:45 PM |

Shazam blows my mind tbh. It must have a database of literally millions of songs, and I just don't get how it can connect to its server, convert the audio it's hearing into some kind of binary data format and search through that entire database to return a result in just a couple of seconds to identify a song. And what's more, you can literally play it any part of a song to search against. Technically it's a pretty incredible app.

Indeed, so much so that it's fun when I find a song it doesn't recognise!
