Little Mix review, Confetti: New album is a glamorous statement of independence

4 out of 5 Stars

Little Mix’s last album was mired in controversy. Released just days after it was announced that the British quartet had split from their label Syco, 2018’s LM5 was a confused mix of influences that reflected how the group were being pushed and pulled in different directions. Its follow-up, Confetti, is by contrast a fierce and mercifully coherent statement of independence.

Since they formed on The X Factor in 2011, Little Mix have traded in Girl Power, often taking cues from the movement/brand’s pioneers, the Spice Girls. They’ve become experts at the kiss-off anthem, from their early hit “Shout Out to My Ex” to Confetti single and opener “Break Up Song”, which races along a pulsing, Eighties-influenced synth beat. Further into the album, the genre gets a clever twist on “Not a Pop Song”, with its thinly veiled digs at former label boss Simon Cowell: “I don’t do what Simon says/ Get the message ’cos it’s read.”

Little Mix’s new talent show, The Search, seeks to form a group inspired by the ones who dominated the charts when members Jade Thirlwall, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jesy Nelson and Perrie Edwards were pre-teens. This approach has clearly inspired the album too, with “If You Want My Love” and “Happiness” nodding to the silky R&B of groups such as TLC and Destiny’s Child. “Rendezvous”, while an album highlight, sounds an awful lot like “Buttons” by the Pussycat Dolls – for the most part, those retro influences mesh wonderfully with contemporary pop production.

Confetti doesn’t stray too far from the empowered glam pop that Little Mix have made their forte. Its 13 tracks are a polished mix of flirtatious bops and high-octane tracks that celebrate self-worth, with the moving torch song “Breathe” serving as the album’s closer. Sure, there’s nothing groundbreaking to be found here, but it does prove that Little Mix do just fine when they’re relying on their own instincts.

3/5 from The Guardian, https://twitter.com/guardianculture/status/...3449293824?s=21

Odd considering Alexis loved Glory Days. Anyway, that’s not a horrible rating at least. Hoping they can maybe get a new Metacritic peak with this album.

Alexis only gives 3 stars to female artists. I was worried he'd be the one to review this.

He even have Norman Rockwell 3 stars, which Guardian ranked as #1 in their top 100 albums of the year a few months later lol.

Is it 'Glory Days' that they don't have a metacritic score for? laugh.gif

I'm sure it's one of their albums which doesn't and it's that one aha.

Just checked and he wasn't the one who reviewed Glory Days or Salute lol so yeah.. it's borderline misogyny, looking through a lot of recent pop girl releases and the ones he's reviewed he's been oddly harsh on them. But oh well. 3/5 isn't horrible but I'm sure The Guardian are one of the big scorers on Metacritic.

Little Mix get up to the same old tricks on an attempt to move forward with Confetti
5.5/10

On their sixth outing, Confetti - also their first away from the clawing clutches of Simon Cowell and his label Syco - comes a stride forward in reminding the world of the behemoth Little Mix has become. Given the situation, almost freedom, that the assertive group find themselves in, there’s certainly a gap in Confetti that leaves you wishing there was a further step forward into something coherent.

Front-loaded with smash hits "Break Up Song" and "Holiday", to have this watertight bow of perfect pop then move through a sparkling sequence of songs to "Another Pop Song" which, for all it's Cowell baiting - and absolute truth - feels disingenuous. They've broken away from the lion's den, and have simply erected their own which feels just as entrapping.

Certainly, a group such as Little Mix are a moulded to serve a certain purpose - where most artists can break away from this and explore further territory - the four-piece are beholden to their shackles of serving admittedly impeccably crafted pop about sex, love and breakups. But when its served in a manner that hops between the matter in a disjointed fashion, to come along for the ride on a full-length is quite the struggle. In their components, Confetti's make up is fierce, brash, melodiously incumbent and perfectly befitting these ever-darkening days, but once you settle in, certainly the confetti rains down, but any resonance or semblance of an emotional deliverance leaves the dance floor.

Tracks such as "Happiness", with its gloriously fluttering lyrics regarding self-love and acceptance of what you want from another person, and "Gloves", with its euphoric, deep groove perfectly befitting a musical with its rapture, lift Confetti's spirits. The moments that shine - and there are a lot of them - are blinding. Even when the party slows to appreciate the human nature of friendship (“My Love Won’t Let You Down”). the shimmer holds you close.

If you're looking for choice picks that suit your current standing (single / taken / stuck in lockdown lusting) then you'll find what you need - a relatable nature is served up on a silver platter - but a greater understanding of anything other than the above shall not be found. Pop for pop's sake is never a bad thing, but when a band like Little Mix are in the midst of a year that's seen them take no prisoner, a little more care in the craft of the big picture wouldn't go amiss.

Oof, that’s a little harsh lol. Seems like the score was a bit harsher than what was said. 😐
