![]() UK Chart Run: 6-2-1-1-2-2-8-14-22-22-26-57 (12 weeks) A bit of a shocker this round. Yes, I started the new thread without Dobbo needing to prompt even once! ![]() Review by PCF... "Comedian Vic Reeves, and comedy partner-in-crime Bob Mortimer, had an alter-ego as The Pub Singer mocking a certain style of singing, but had scored an unlikely hit with a cover of Born Free when he paired up Indie band The Wonder Stuff to cover the 1969 UK/US chart-topper Dizzy, a comeback gem of a bubblegum hit from 60's hitmaker Tommy Roe. I'm very biased. Tommy Roe's Dizzy was the first single I ever bought with my own money - given to me by my great-grandparents as we headed off to Singapore for 2 years. I bought it on Changi evening market in late 1969, so it's a special record for me. Not to mention Bass-o-matic who used the rhythm sample on the brilliant Fascinating Rhythm in 1990 (aka William Orbit, 90's hitmaker galore). As a Vic & Bob fan I had mixed feelings on this cover - it was great to see Dizzy getting discovered by a new generation, it was a decent indiepop tongue-in-cheek romp, and I loved that it topped the chart, but it didn't quite have the charm of the original for me. Hey ho, I got to see Tommy Roe on tour as a result of the resurgence, and also Vic & Bob, who's comic Big Night Out had a mini-concert at the end. So, I got to see Dizzy in both versions. Result!" So, yet again, who's out next? |

Sad to see this go, been fond of the Wonder Stuff following their performances on TOTP 1988/89.
Went for Oceanic this time |

Right Said Fred as well.
Also noticed that 'Any Dream Will Do' is 'Any Dream Will Don' in the poll. Simple mistake just thought I'd point it out! This post has been edited by Rob S~: Nov 22 2020, 05:25 PM |

Gone for Jason Donovan, but honestly I have a soft spot for all of these, most are extremely cheesy, but I can't help myself!

well, it's not looking like the results are changing so here's a review pre-official loser:
"Right Said Fred took the world by storm with this good-natured romp about vanity. Given they clearly spent a lot of time in the gymn and were happy to take the piss out of themselves I think most people found it quite a charming novelty track. Certainly weeks at number 2 on the UK charts kept it selling and selling over a good length of time. I liked it, it's still quite amusing with some great one-liners. When Richard Fairbrass came out as bisexual (with a then long-term male partner until his partner died of cancer) he was pushing 40 when he hit the big time and was happy to take it all with a pinch of salt, pushed his nude pin-up photos and laughed it off, and came back with a UK chart-topper Deeply Dippy. Now that was an annoying song! Don't Talk Just Kiss was a much better record (with soul legend Jocelyn Brown, I think) but this is the famous one they'll all be known by. As long as you don't hear it too often it's fine. " |
