Commentary

Another stroke of genius from hit-and-miss Bastille, this was a definite veer away from their poppy sound to provide a brilliantly guitar-heavy track about the Internet with Blur guitarist Graham Coxon on board as well. This managed to rack up quite the following on Buzzjack and also a healthy chunk of weeks in the Top 10 either side of its solo week at #1. And true to form, their next single 'survivin' was so bland it missed my Top 100 entirely.

Into the songs which really deserved to be in my Top 10 now, it was all so close! Here are Dutch band Kensington with their #1 from early on in the year. I'd wanted to be a fan of theirs for quite a while but nothing fully clicked until this. A slow, guitar-y tune which genuinely sounds brilliant, this faced off stiff competition for the #1 last year and I'm looking forward to what they bring in 2021!

Aargh this deserves to be Top 10 so much! But sadly I can only put 10 songs there. Basically the opposite of the last song, this is fun, catchy and something you can't help but dance to. It reached #1 in probably the most hotly-contested week in my chart but was unfortunately no match for Declan who soared to #1 the week after. And like so many artists this year they remain a one-hit wonder, despite releasing a few more tracks they pale in comparison to this one.

Violent Thing was my favourite song from 2020's Eurovision cohort! Such an infectious track, so catchy.

I've heard Underdog a couple of times, it's lovely! Need to pay it (and Alicia in general recently) more attention as she's so talented.

I just checked out Everyone Changes because I've liked a couple of both their song's previously. It's very nice, it's really gets going towards the end where they're harmonising.

Just listened to 'Reasons' too and that a fun indie-pop track.

I'll make sure to check out some of your top 10 too biggrin.gif

great to see Don Diablo well inside the top 40 here and Martin Solveig being a snap top 10. I expect Declan McKenna will take #1 fairly easily here though.

Bodies is a great song - even though MUNA are just a feature it really fits with their sound!

Double Declan, Martin Solveig and Oh Wonder would make a very nice top 4 biggrin.gif

Glad you're a fan of these Joseph! As I said I was never really into Alicia until this song but it really is a gem, Violent Thing probably ended up being my go-to Eurovision song this year as well even if it lost out on a #1 to The Roop. Thanks!

The highest one-hit wonder in my EOY, this soared up to #1 just as I moved down to Wiltshire and stayed there for 4 weeks. I think what really grabs me about this song it that there isn't a verse/chorus structure to it, with the exception of the first 4 lines the whole song is just a long and winding chorus that repeats itself throughout the song. It's an excellent piece of music and I'm looking forward to hearing more from them (just found out they released a song last week so I better get listening!)

At #9 we have the song which is simultaneously the highest dance song in my countdown, the highest song to miss my weekly Top 5 and also the highest song to have any impact chart-wise. Amazing and bizarre French DJ teamed up with Canadian rapper Roy Woods (unfortunatly not Roy Wood from Wizzard) to produce a song which was one of my staples all the way through the opening months of the year (remember those, when Coronavirus was just a distant issue in China?) and is the best of 2020 dance. It's also quite short as I've just found trying to listen ot it whilst typing up a commentary! Such a shame it never got into the Top 40 after spending so many weeks inside the chart but that's how it goes I guess.

Commentary

The highest non-#1 in my countdown now, this was the pinnacle of Jack Garratt's long-awaited comeback for me but was absolutely not the sort-of song I (or anyone else) was expecting from him. Of course his earthy voice is as present as always but this fast-paced track almost belongs in the dance forum if it weren't for all the guitar step-ups in it. I definitely can't do this song justice in a commentary so go and listen to it if you haven't already!

I had to take your recommendation on 'Better' - absolutely loved 'Surprise Yourself' from Jack's debut and had been curious whether anything from this album would compare. As it turns out yes, this is incredible! Really enjoyed the fast pace and the production was full of surprises! I'm nearly at a loss for words too laugh.gif

This was the song I had at the top of my chart going into 2020, so it's very fitting to have it so high up my EOY. It really brought me back into Oh Wonder after I'd forgotten them a little bit, this is a beautiful song with a really creative one-shot video to match. Their harmonies continue to work really well together, including the parts where all instruments bar the drums cut out.

The first Cavetown song of 2020, this was very much a step away from all the ukulele ditties from the previous year with Robbie taking on a much more drum-and-guitar focussed approach for this song. I think it's a love song but I can't say that for definite, either way its a bop and unfortunately this set a standard which was very hard to beat for me as he's struggled to have any hits since.

The first time ever a worship song has made my EOY Top 5, I have to say I'd never really cared much about NEEDTOBREATHE until this year, so much so that when I first charted 'Hang On' I didn't even know they were a Christian band. Once I heard this song though they very quickly soared up the ranks for me, a beautiful song about how none of us are perfect and we all sin and make mistakes but God loves us through the thick and thin. It resonates so much with me (as I'm sure it does with everyone) and has as a result garnered itself an incredibly blue-looking chart run. Another act I'm looking forward to hearing a lot more from in 2021!

Next up we have another song which is still in my Top 40, the highest BJSC discovery for me and by far the biggest injustice in that contest this year. I can't say I know too much/anything about Ball Park Music or where they've oe from but after this I was most certainly sold, like Cherub it's starts off very soft and mellow before building to a guitar-filled crescendo at the end. The melody is brilliant as well and thank you very much Dexton for introducing!

Commentary

At #3 we have the highest song which isn't by Declan McKenna - that song being 'Lost In the Thick Of It' by The Coronas, which is currently enjoying an extended period in the lower realms of my chart thanks to the January lull. After hearing Haunted I was very excited to hear what The Coronas would do next, and this collaboration was no disappointment. A brilliant piano backing, fast-paced melody and vocals that just work together so well. It deserves a lot more than its seven weeks in the Top 10!

Which means it's double Declan at the top cheer.gif This was the first song from Declan's new album, and whilst on first listen it was a definite improvement from the in-between-album tracks it certainly didn't resonate with me immediately - I definitely remember thinking the build-up to the chorus could have done with some more drums. Nonetheless, it grew on me and was soon my #1. Despite being knocked off by Cavetown and then The Fratellis, it outlasted both of them and, with its catchy chorus and bizarre video, is most certainly deserving of the #2 position here.
