6- PLAYED A LIVE (THE BONGO SONG)- Safri Duo (24,000)

20 years since this first made the chart! I know there were some other great dance tracks that year but I think this is my favourite dance hit of 2001, for me it just displays what was great about dance music at that time.

Missed the top 40 this week?

Jason Derulo featuring Adam Levine
Lifestyle

Non-album single
Released: 22nd January 2021
Label: Future History / Artist Partner Group

Video

Biography

Jason Derulo’s story is a classic rags-to-riches saga about how hard work (and looks that’ll get you named as one of People’s Sexiest Men Alive) can pay off. Born in Miramar, Florida in 1989 to Haitian immigrants, Jason Desrouleaux got his start at performing arts schools and penning tracks for Diddy, Lil Wayne and Danity Kane, among many others, while working on his own songs and routines. He’s a true chameleon, able to blend with artists as varied as Stevie Wonder and Keith Urban, both of whom he teamed with on 2015’s ahead-of-its-time hillbilly banger, “Broke”. But it’s R&B where he truly shines: hits like 2014’s “Wiggle” and “Talk Dirty” were daring, witty dance tracks that made him a global force, and he’s since branched out into hip-hop, funk and even a Bond-theme-like single, the Meghan Trainor collaboration “Painkiller”. On top of more hits, like 2017’s “Tiptoe” with French Montana, and guest spots, such as the worldwide smash “1,2,3” by Sofia Reyes, he’s mastered other platforms, making millions on social media and putting his musical-theatre training to work as the star of the film adaptation of Cats. With bigger acting roles and new music looming, Derulo’s presence is sure to be felt everywhere, for decades to come. - Apple Music

Silk City and Ellie Goulding featuring Diplo and Mark Ronson
New Love

Non-album single
Released: 22nd January 2021
Label: Silk City

Video

Biography

Silk City
Diplo and Mark Ronson named Silk City after the Philadelphia institution where they met in the early 2000's. Longtime friends, the project is the two multi-platinum, Grammy-winning producers’ first official collaboration and channels their shared love of soul, disco and house music. - Spotify

Ellie Goulding
Ellie Goulding's breakthrough was nothing if not decisive. She rose to stardom in 2010 with her debut album, Lights, which earned the Critics’ Choice prize at the Brit Awards and led the BBC’s “Sound of…” poll. She’s only the second artist to win both in the same year, sharing the honour with none other than Adele. The Hereford-born singer started performing and composing as a young girl, influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush, then teamed with Lights producer Starsmith while still a student at the University of Kent. The collaboration helped elevate Goulding’s natural talents as a singer-songwriter, turning her into an electropop phenom as she blended acoustic guitars and dance-floor-ready beats on “Starry Eyes” and the Bjork-evoking “Under the Sheets”. Her biggest moment came in 2015 with “Love Me Like You Do”, the power ballad from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack that sold millions and cemented her as a world-class pop star. In addition to going platinum with her albums Halcyon and Delirium, Goulding’s versatility with genres and lyricism has made her an in-demand collaborator, working on “Return to Love” with classical tenor Andrea Bocelli, the club hit "I Need Your Love" with producer Calvin Harris and the 2019 break-up anthem "Hate Me" with Juice WRLD. What’s next for Goulding’s career? To quote the title of another of her 2012 hits, “anything could happen.” - Apple Music

It has waned on me slightly over the week (I barely use TikTok so I first heard it on Sunday) but I still prefer it over either of it's direct competitors ('Without You'/'Don't Play).

I'd rather forget it as well, terrible version of a beautiful song by Tracy Chapman.

Praying for a miracle that somehow Apricots has held on to the top 40... and the much more likely scenario that we'll have a great #1 album!

Biography

RAYE
Croydon, South London-based R&B singer Rachel Keen (aka RAYE) started her career at the age of ten, guided by her father and her guitar teacher. Her interest in music quickly led to small charity gigs and bouts of singing at her local church. By 2012, RAYE had enrolled in the prestigious BRIT school for music and singing, spending two years perfecting her craft, but she left in 2014 due to the limitations she was being taught and the desire to create her own rules. The following year, RAYE released her debut EP, Welcome to the Winter. The lead single, "Hotbox," was noticed by Olly Alexander (Years & Years) on Hype Machine; he got in touch with RAYE to discuss music, and arranged a meeting with the A&R department at Polydor.

With major-label backing, RAYE kept busy in 2016, including co-writing her single "I, U, US" alongside Charli XCX, appearing as a guest vocalist on Jonas Blue's "By Your Side" single, and releasing the SECOND EP. She was back working with Charli XCX the following year, guesting on the singer's tracks "Girls" and "Dreamer." RAYE also delivered her own single, "The Line." The singles "Check" (with Kojo Funds) and "Cigarette" (with Mabel and Stefflon Don) were released in 2018. The following year saw RAYE issue the emotionally charged single "Love Me Again."

Rudimental
The London-based electronic outfit Rudimental originally started out in 2009 as the production duo Piers Agget and Kesi Dryden. Years later, they made their debut as artists with their U.K. number one single "Feel the Love." Agget's DJ'ing brought him into contact with DJ Locksmith, who joined the pair, followed later by a chance meeting with Amir Amor at a studio in Hoxton, London. Rudimental's first release, 2011's dancehall-inspired "Deep in the Valley," appeared on garage, grime, and dubstep label Black Butter and was quickly followed by "Speeding" and "Spoons." Picked up by Asylum Records/Warner Music off the back of their first few singles, 2012 saw the release of the drum'n'bass roller "Feel the Love." Championed by Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1, the single reached the top of the U.K. charts the same weekend as the four-piece played on their home turf at the Radio 1 2012 Hackney Weekender. In 2013, Rudimental's debut album Home arrived. Working with some of the U.K.'s finest talent, including the voice of 2012 Emeli Sandé, the album's mix of dubstep, R&B, house, and drum'n'bass received positive reviews and went straight to the number one spot on the U.K. album chart. Hit singles from the album continued into 2014, including the U.K. number one "Waiting All Night," which won a BRIT Award for Best British Single. Rudimental scored another big hit in 2015 with the Ed Sheeran collaboration "Bloodstream," and geared up for the release of their second full-length, We the Generation, which included collaborations with Dizzee Rascal, Anne-Marie, MNEK, Lianne La Havas, Bobby Womack, and several others. The second Sheeran feature on the album, "Lay It All on Me," became the duo's first U.S.-charting song and their eighth U.K. Top 40 track. The song also went platinum in Australia, Denmark, Italy, New Zealand, and the U.K. They closed 2017 by recruiting James Arthur for the single "Sun Comes Up." The following year, Rudimental issued a handful of high-profile collaborations, including "Let Me Live" with Major Lazer, Anne-Marie, and Mr. Eazi; "Walk Alone" with Tom Walker; "Summer Love" with Rita Ora; and the multi-platinum, chart-topping "These Days" with Jess Glynne, Macklemore, and Dan Caplen. These singles all appeared on their third full-length release, Toast to Our Differences, which landed in early 2019. - Apple Music
