Missed the top 40 this week?

Clean Bandit featuring iann dior
Higher

2nd single from forthcoming studio album
Released: 29th January 2021
Label: Atlantic Records UK

Video

Biography

Classical crossover in dance music is hardly new; in the ’70s, disco remixes of orchestral staples were all the rage. But when Clean Bandit turned Mozart’s melodies into deep house on their 2014 debut, they somehow made it seem natural, rather than like a novelty. But then, two founding members of the London group are themselves classical musicians: Cellist Grace Chatto and violinist Neil Amin-Smith played together in a college string quartet when Chatto’s boyfriend, Jack Patterson, recorded a performance and began chopping it up over beats. Somewhere in between that “eureka” moment and writing 10 songs in the two weeks before their first gig, Clean Bandit (rounded out by Patterson and his brother Luke, a drummer) forged their sound: a lively, springy fusion of pop and dance, buoyed by classical music’s sense of scale and a conductor’s intuition for featuring the right soloist at the right time. In the case of their stratospheric 2014 breakout hit, “Rather Be”, that soloist was Jess Glynne, an all-but-unknown singer whose soulful but unpretentious tone control made her the perfect fit for the song’s memorable keyboard riff. Since then, Clean Bandit (sans Amin-Smith since 2016) have turned to an ever-expanding roster of guest vocalists—Charli XCX, Rita Ora, Demi Lovato—while cleverly tweaking their style to suit each voice: sparkling reggae backbeats for Sean Paul, skippy syncopations for UK garage icon Craig David. Over the years, Clean Bandit have largely traded classical motifs and house beats for acoustic guitars and slower, more tropical grooves, but the spirit of their music remains the same, distilling complex emotions into an unforgettable form. - Apple Music

Rag'n'Bone Man
All You Ever Wanted

1st single from Life By Misadventure
Released: 29th January 2021
Label: Sony Music Entertainment UK

Video

Biography

As a bearded bloke with a great big voice trading under the unabashedly old-fashioned name of Rag’n’Bone Man, Rory Graham shattered the mould for music stars who broke out of in the 2010s. Then again, he was bound to break something given the power that pours out of him on “Human”, his debut single in 2016. The fusion of blues and hip-hop established the singer/songwriter—born in 1985 in the town of Uckfield—as one of the decade’s most unique new arrivals. It’s also an arresting showcase for the booming baritone that Graham himself was surprised to discover when he tried singing a Muddy Waters song at an open mic in the mid-2000s. Until then, he’d spent his teenage years rapping for hip-hop and drum ‘n’ bass crews in his hometown. His take on vintage blues—as well as soul and funk, two words he has tattooed on knuckles—still reflects his love of the more modern sounds and sensibilities provided by collaborators like producer Two Inch Punch a.k.a. Ben Ash on Rag’n’Bone’s 2017 debut album Human. With “Giant”—a 2019 match-up with Calvin Harris—Graham got another chance to show how his old-school gusto and soulful delivery can heighten a song’s intensity without overwhelming it or blunting its pop appeal. Even with all of Graham’s potential force, he knows the value of restraint, too. - Apple Music

I think Clean Bandit might be a spent force now. It feels like they pushed REALLY hard to get 'Tick Tock' into the top 10 with a flurry of popular artists attached, remixes and the most commercially pandering sound imaginable. I can't really see 'Higher' picking up much more than this.

It was only really Mabel attached though, 24kGoldn's non-TikTok songs have done absolutely nothing here (even one pushed and R1 playlisted with DaBaby)

they could easily rebound with their next single but they sure feel like they're heading that way.
I don't understand why they got Iann Dior of all people on the single, just because he was featured on a big #1 hit doesn't mean he has any sort of sizeable fanbase - hell even 24kGoldn doesn't with the 'Mood' follow-up single not doing anything chart wise.
not to mention the song itself is a huge disappointment.

Biography

Armed with a mesmerizing, nimble soprano—and a vocal register often likened to Mariah Carey’s and Christina Aguilera’s—Ariana Grande began her career as a child star on Broadway and Nickelodeon before transforming into a pop and R&B powerhouse. Instantly recognizable thanks to her signature ponytail, cat ears, babydoll dresses, and breezy self-confidence, her slyly sexual personal brand has, like that of the Spice Girls before her, become an iconic image of young female power. But Grande is more than a symbol: Over the course of several albums and scores of hit singles—beginning with 2013’s “The Way” (featuring Mac Miler) through The Weeknd-assisted “Love Me Harder” and “Break Free” (featuring Zedd)—she has consistently outshined her male collaborators and deftly parlayed her stardom into activism. An LGBTQ advocate and outspoken feminist (“I’m tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future PROPERTY,” she tweeted in 2016), she uses her platform to confront issues like misogyny, sexism, homophobia, and bullying, spreading a message of love over all. Nowhere was this more clear than in May 2017: After terrorists attacked her concert in Manchester, England, killing 22 and injuring hundreds, Grande continued her tour. "Perspective changes your life,” she told Beats 1’s Ebro Darden. "You want to stay in the moment and try not to give into fear, because obviously the whole point of finishing the tour was being there for my fans. You want to set the same example and keep going.” And that she did: Her Max Martin-produced smash “No Tears Left to Cry,” an escapist dance-floor triumph released a year after the attack, sends a message of hope and healing, with a dose of hear-me-roar attitude. - Apple Music

Biography

Jax Jones
When Duke Dumont topped the UK charts with his single “I Got U” in 2014, many listeners may have assumed that featured artist Jax Jones was the singer. In fact, Jones (born Timucin Aluo in 1987) was a cowriter and producer on the song, whose No. 1 position marked his auspicious debut. Raised in London by a Turkish father, a Malaysian mother and a Nigerian stepfather, Jones grew up on a mix of American hip-hop, UK dance and African music, which might help to explain the mix of styles that swirls through his music: His youthful fondness for Prince shows through in funk-infused cuts like 2015’s “Ocean Drive”, while Afro-Caribbean accents bubble up in 2018’s “Ring Ring,” a lilting tropical-house jam. Though his beats generally follow the punchy cadence of deep-diving future house, he brings a hip-hop producer’s collage sensibility to the mixing desk: Many of his productions slyly interpolate other songs. “You Don’t Know Me”, from 2017, is built around the slinky hook of M.A.N.D.Y. and Booka Shade’s 2005 anthem “Body Language”, while “I Got U” contains a choice bit of Whitney Houston’s “My Love Is Your Love”. Whether on his own productions or his remixes for Ellie Goulding, Charlie XCX and Missy Elliott, Jones’ habitual blend of pop polish and house groove is unmistakable. In conversation with Beats 1’s Julie Adenuga, he spoke about his unique relationship to dance music. “I just thought I'd try it,” he said. “House is a collage of everything the creator is. If you love hip-hop, you can chuck that in there. If you love rock, you can chuck that in there too. It took a long time, but now it makes a lot of sense. It’s sample-based and also musical, so it's a very natural fit. Life is beautiful like that. They say you have to, like, get rid of yourself to go to the next level. And I think that’s what happened.” - Apple Music

Au/Ra
Born in Ibiza and raised in Antigua, singer/songwriter Au/Ra crafts alternative pop with electronic influences inspired by her multicultural upbringing. Influenced by artists like Lana Del Rey, Kraftwerk, the Neighbourhood, and Arctic Monkeys, the young Jamie Lou Stenzel was raised by music-loving parents (her father is a producer in the electronic/trance scene) and decided to pursue music at the age of ten. Under the name Jamie Lou, she uploaded her covers of songs by Birdy, P!nk, Shakira, Rihanna, and more. Later, she adopted the Au/Ra moniker, taking inspiration from a character in her self-penned Lord of the Rings fan fiction. Her first single, "Concrete Jungle," bore a striking resemblance to Lorde, a "Royals 2.0" for 2016. She followed with "Outsiders," an outcast anthem that interpolated Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" into its lyrics. Her third single, "Kicks," was another big beat anthem with vocals leaning in the direction of Halsey. These three tracks would find their way onto her debut EP, Outsiders, which arrived in 2017. In 2019 Au/Ra issued the ethereal electro-pop single "Dance in the Dark." - Apple Music

Biography

Internet Money
A collective of producers, a record label, and a means of providing online music-making tutorials, Internet Money is the brainchild of Taz Taylor, a producer who got his feet wet in the industry by selling his beats online. Internet Money launched a knowledge-sharing YouTube channel in late 2016, and three years later started releasing tracks on its like-named label, including their own "Somebody," produced by Taylor and partner Nick Mira.

Taylor, a native Floridian, established himself by selling his early beats online to support himself and his mother, who had been diagnosed with cancer. Once he made some headway, he signed a publishing deal, and in 2017 landed his first credits on commercially released tracks such as Desiigner's "Liife," Kodak Black's "My Klik," and XXXTENTACION'S "f*** Love." Taylor worked on the last of these three with emergent teenaged musician/producer Nick Mira, and the two were soon behind Juice WRLD's "Lucid Dreams" and Lil Tecca's "Ransom," both of which became Top Ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Around the time the latter hit was taking off in 2019, the label side of Internet Money was officially launched with a Mira-assisted EP by Poorstacy. That October, the label issued "Somebody," credited to Internet Money with Taylor and Mira the producers and Tecca and A Boogie Wit da Hoodie as the featured rappers. In 2020, the collective offered up an expansive debut full-length, B4 the Storm, featuring an array of artists including Future, Lil Tecca, the Kid LAROI, Swae Lee, and many more.

Gunna
As a kid growing up just south of Atlanta, rapper Gunna, a.k.a. Sergio Kitchens (born 1993), used to practise what he and his friends called “six-month runs”: cut all extraneous spending for six months and save, save, save. The discipline and deferred gratification served him well: After spending his late teens and early twenties quietly exploring his style and releasing only one mixtape, Gunna broke big in 2016 with a feature on Young Thug’s “Floyd Mayweather”—a co-sign that helped him bypass the hustle and made him one of the most sought-after new voices in the game. Later that year, Thug’s YSL label released the first of his multi-part Drip Season series, which synthesised his influences into an airy trap sound: smooth and mellow, blending spacious beats with a relaxed, highly melodic delivery and off-the-cuff humour.

Between a couple more seasons of Drip and features with Travis Scott (“Yosemite”) and Metro Boomin (“Space Cadet”), Gunna also forged a productive collaboration with Atlanta rapper Lil Baby, releasing Drip Harder in late 2018. The pairing was anointed GOAT status from a sometime GOAT himself, Future, with whom Gunna also featured on “Unicorn Purp”. Like Thug, Gunna has a thing for fashion; “drip” is his slang for personal style. “The salesmen that know me in Barneys say I smell like Biscotti mixed with Creed,” he raps on “Idk Why”, from his official 2019 debut album, Drip or Drown 2.
