Maybe this is a bit of a sore subject in a Madonna forum...considering how nastily critics treated Madonna the actress. But. I've watched a chunk of her filmography, and I'm curious what other fans make of her movies.

The ones I've seen:

Dick Tracy. I actually really love this movie. The cast. The comic book aesthetic. The score. The songs. All great...and I'd venture to say this is my favorite Madonna role. She's so good in it.

Desperately Seeking Susan. I think she's at her most natural here. I realize the plot's a bit bonkers, but I'd love to live in this movie...if that makes sense. It gives me a nostalgia for a time I never lived in.

Evita. I do think this material works a bit better on stage. The film feels a bit like a long montage for me at times. But the songs and music are gorgeous, and that's what matters. M's excellent.

Who's That Girl. Beats me if this has ever been said, but I genuinely do think M is good in this. She creates a character, a living cartoon, and commits to it. I think she and Griffin Dunne are two of the only positives in a film that's a mess. I think my issue with it is I'm not clear on the rules of this world. Is this a standard comedy where wacky (yet plausible) things can happen?...or an exaggerated world (like The Naked Gun) where literally anything can take place? To me, it veers inconsistently between the two. And I find parts of it to be desperate in its attempts at comedy. The tied up bridesmaids spring to mind...

Body Of Evidence. I think she does what the role calls for here and, to me, the star quality's on display. It's not a great film, but it's pretty in line with the other fun, smutty erotic thrillers of the early 90s.

Shanghai Surprise. This is the only one I've seen where I thought her performance flat-out didn't work. I kinda understood the logic in her casting...with her resembling Hollywood starlets of the era when it's set. But she's just not comfortable with this part...and I think she's probably the weakest link in an otherwise unmemorable film.

Other than that, I've seen Four Rooms and Die Another Day, but not recently enough to have opinions. I have not seen A Certain Sacrifice (...if that counts?), Bloodhounds of Broadway, A League of Their Own (surprisingly), Dangerous Game, The Next Best Thing, Swept Away, or Arthur and the Invisibles (or any number of small cameo films). Any of them I need to give a shot?

Same really, I've only watched 'Die Another Day' as I'm a huge fan of Bond but that was hardly a starring role! People seem to act as if her cameo was the biggest issue with the film and I could probably list about 10 things worse before I'd even consider Madonna. It wasn't even that bad, a little cheesy and not really a necessary scene but nothing that I could fault Madonna herself for:

Oh actually I do think I might have seen Arthur & the Invisibles as a kid but I couldn't tell you anything about it.

I also watched W.E. which Madonna directed and I actually really liked it.

I've seen quite a few of Madonna's movies & well... they're quite a mixed bag & so here are my thoughts on the ones I've seen =

Desperately Seeking Susan
One of Madonna's best movies for sure & if it wasn't for this ONE early success then she wouldn't have had the momentum to make bad movie after bad movie. When I was younger, I used to really like this, but now.... I never go back to it anymore, because its pretty dull, despite being having a lot going on, a serious lack of energy. However Madonna was good in it (even if she was playing herself) & just goes to show that she should have chosen more supporting roles as they tend to work better.

Shanghai Surprise
The only 'surprising' thing about this is that it sucked, the 'Gigli' of the 1980's & further proof that NO-ONE wants to see real life couples on screen. If anyone has ever seen this, then I dunno about you, but I've always found it odd that they named the movie after a booby trapped exploding belt, hell its not even an important plot point, just stupid. Both Madonna & Sean Penn are horribly mis-cast here, don't get me wrong Sean Penn is a great actor in dramatic roles, but comedy adventure, isn't quite his thing. Then Madonna as a missionary in the 1930's with that much makeup & hairspray & way beyond her range as an actress. Even the plot itself is a total mess, something about her wanting the flowers for opium, then they turn out to be diamonds, WHAT THE HELL.

Who's That Girl
This one wasn't quite as bad as 'SS', but it wasn't very good either, a failed attempt at a screwball comedy that just gives you a headache, with Madonna's awfully annoying cartoonish accent. Some of the jokes do land (by the other characters) in this movie but there's a reason that people only remembers the soundtrack & not the movie itself.

Bloodhounds of Broadway
The least watched & least remembered movie in her filmography & YES probably worse than both 'SS' & 'WTG' put together. Despite a pretty decent cast of Matt Dillion, Jennifer Grey, Rutger Hauer & Randy Quaid. There's about 4 or 5 different stories going on & at no point do you care what's going on. The only positive is that Madonna plays a 1920's showgirl pretty well, she does fit into this kinda era pretty well. But everything else is just nonsense.

Dick Tracy
I vaguely remember this being everywhere at the time with tons of hype, toys, cartoons, soundtrack etc...then it kinda faded out, do love the look, the sets & Madonna's great in this, its the role that she's born to play. But do feel that this steals a lot of plot points from 'Batman '89', hell it even has a similar score (both done by Danny Elfman). Warren Beatty doesn't bring much life to this movie or to his title character, its just disappointing & quite flat.

A League of Their Own
Madonna's best movie & she's hardly ever in it. But its a fantastic movie with a stellar cast of Tom Hanks & Geena Davis about a group of women forming their baseball team in the 1940's while their husbands are off to war.. A fantastic heartwarming 90's movie.

Body of Evidence
So bad its good, Madonna does okay as a dangerous femme fatale, but even she can't make up for the poor script & awful direction this Basic Instinct knock off takes. The dialogue is laughable & who in the hell wants to see the Green Goblin naked (I don't).

The Next Best Thing
Now this should have worked with a plot that's very ahead of its time & plus co-starring her gay best friend Rupert Everett. But wow this was horrible, Madonna tries to play relatable & it just doesn't work, its overly dramatic & jarring choices made & the way the song 'American Pie' was shoved into the movie, made no sense at all. Yet another failed Madonna vanity project.

Swept Away
Watch the 1974 original to see just how badly this fails just about on every level. There's a reason why this was savaged by critics (more than usual) & effectively ended her acting career for good (mostly).

Die Another Day
The favourite Bond movie of NO-ONE.

Despite the poor reception to Madonna as an actress, you can't deny that she was actually involved in six successful movies!

Desperately Seeking Susan
Dick Tracy
A League of Their Own
Evita
Die Another Day
Arthur and the Invisibles

Wiki tells me that even Body of Evidence made an $8m box office return on its budget, so technically you could say that too? Then of course there's Truth or Dare which was the highest grossing documentary at the time.
