Stumbled across this old thread from 2014 which Dan made at the time, and I wondered what other instrumental songs I might have missed over the years I wasn’t active. I always hear from Bré that instrumental songs do well in BJSC, although my only one to date was a DNQ. I am however considering sending an instrumental song in the future, but I am yet to make a final decision.

So far, Zanmatony’s only instrumental entry was in BJSC 96 and was a chilled instrumental entry by Envio – Touched By The Sun [Rusch & Elusive's Chill Out Mix]. It finished 22nd in my Semi final and subsequently DNQ’d, and at 10:58 in length, it is also the longest entry by Zanmatony to date;

Over to you.

XLI - Prance Faris - Flares - 3rd
LIII - Michael Woods - Platinum Chains (Rontvian Club Edit) - 4th
LIV - Rivaz - Colors - 3rd
LXXVIII - Ryan Hemsworth feat Tomggg - Cream Soda - DNQ
XCIII - Tina Guo - Super Mario Bros. - 12th
XCIX - Tom Fall - Kaamos - 6th
CXII - Wim Mertens - Close Cover - 8th
CXXVI - Loods - Gummi - 19th

We've had quite good success with instrumentals overall, although Cream Soda was definitely underrated. I've sent a few others with only a few vocals here and there, like Moonwalk Away by Goldfish (4th) and RL Grime's Because Of U (3rd) or others with a vocal that blends into the instrumental, like Gebirgsbachtürkis by Thomas Lemmer & Christoph Sebastian Pabst which came 27th earlier this year.

93: Carpenter Brut - Turbo Killer :: 22nd
119: Toberu Mono - The Last Story (Thaehan Remix) :: 15th
126: Randy Domingues - Warrior :: 34th

Still don't know what happened with TK as that was touted as a top 10 and is still my favourite instrumental. Don't think anything will ever surpass it either.

Beirut by Metropole Orkest is a very daring entry from Why So Sirius though it didn't qualify but for me I really enjoy that! Elsewhere I sent Suspiria by Core Self to the Halloween spin-off last year and Untitled 1 by Andre Bratten in Unknown Pleasures! I might consider some more instrumentals in future contests!

I've sent four instrumental entries so far, three of them qualified (and they include my two most successful entries to date!)

110: pg.lost - Terrain (11/38 in final) wub.gif
116: Etostone - Missing Paradise (10/38 in final)
118: God Is An Astronaut - Echoes (34/42 in final)
119: Sleep Party People - Death Is The Future (DNQ, 25/28 in semi)

Two of those qualifiers were post-rock, the other (and highest finish) was trance.

25 overall (and possibly 26 if my current main potential becomes my entry x) I actually thought it was more (not all of these are full instrumentals but they may as well be, I've italicised the ones that have some kind of indiscernable vocals), but I suppose that's still more than most.

BJSC XLVI / Forss / In Paradisum / DNQ (26th in Semi Final)
BJSC XLVIII / Starsmith / Zeros / DNQ (19th in Semi Final)
BJSC LIII / Haiku Salut / Glockelbar / DNQ (18th in Semi Final)
BJSC LXI / M83 / Un Nouveau Soleil / 6th/31
BJSC LXXII / Power Glove / Crypt / 22nd/31
BJSC LXXV / Coyote Kisses / Ferrari / 30th/41
BJSC LXXVI / Two Steps From Hell / Miracles / 12th/42

BJSC LXXVIII / Slow Magic / Girls / 38th/42
BJSC LXXXII / tiasu / Plummet / 12th/41
BJSC LXXXIV / Hiatus / Precious Little / 10th/41
BJSC XC / Kitchen / Time / 21st/42
BJSC XCII / Marcus Warner / Africa / 7th/41
BJSC XCIV / Varien / Lilith / DNQ (22nd in Semi Final) (17th/30 in BJSC TBO: Rejects)
BJSC XCIX / Ravel Nightstar / The Drums and Bass of Flower Bless / 31st/41
BJSC C / Cusco / Orpheus & Eurydice / DNQ (32nd in Semi Final)
BJSC CIV / Mytischi / Cassiopeia / 24th/37
BJSC CVII / Korw / Luna's Moon Dance / 15th/42
BJSC CVIII / We Are All Astronauts / Ether / 31st/38
BJSC CXI / Epic Soul Factory / Everdream / DNQ (27th in Semi Final)
BJSC CXVI / Anoice / nothing there / 21st/36
BJSC CXX / Efisio Cross / Can I Keep You / 9th/38
BJSC CXXII / LAAKE / Introspective / 16th/39
BJSC CXXIII / Fractal Dreamers / Azure of the Horizon / 16th/41
BJSC CXXX / FalKKonE / Eine Kleine Nachtmusik / 34th/41
BJSC CXXXI / Varien / A Pale White Horse / 39th/42

They are varied fortunes, but in most cases, they are the ones I come back to the most!

LXXII - Owl Vision - Lightshy - DNQ
XCV - Nanobii - Chipland - 12th
C - Yuki Hayashi - You Say Run - DNQ
CII - Audio Paradyne & Stahl! - Paradise - 12th
CVI - Inova - Sunken - 11th
CVIII - HISASHIz - Feign Madness - 30th
CXIX - Ghost Data - T O M I E - 19th

'Chipland' and 'Paradise' are among some of my favourite ever entries, when I find a good one, normally happy hardcore as it happens, then it's fantastic. 'Sunken' is pretty fantastic too. Interesting that the year that I qualified every time was also the one I sent the most instrumentals, I was really using that as a good way to score hits for a while. Now, 'T O M I E' is like my 3rd-most recent top 20, so I guess despite not doing it very often I have a good record when I enter instrumentals laugh.gif

You Say Run was very underrated - undoubtedly one of the best anime soundtracks of the 2010s, certainly has become one of the most iconic. Big contests will do that.

some of my favourites like Flutterwonder or Requiem are in this ballpark with only a small amount of discernible vocals but not true instrumentals

A few of mine have been mostly instrumental however like 'Wooma' which only has the "Vooma Vooma Vooma" vocals from the halfway point onwards, and 'Stand By Me' which has the woman saying "stand by me" before the gigantic drop.

I still can’t believe BJSC let Universal Nation DNQ - it’s one of the all time most influential trance classics!

So far, just my 43rd entry which came 11th. Only Prance Faris was an older entry of the ones posted so far ohmy.gif which is quite shocking to me given how not my genre a dance instrumental is laugh.gif

I have actually got an instrumental on the potentials list that might appear for the next contest if I decide against triggering the #BJSCSoWhiteAndEnglish crowd with some German language schalger-dance-rap-pop epic.

purely instrumental-

Fred V & Grafix - Major Happy // BJSC 73, 20th
Anna Meredith - Nautlius // BJSC 87, DNQ
The Comet Is Coming - Summon The Fire // BJSC 113, 16th

There’s quite a few more that are instrumentally-driven but have a vocal sample of some sort

61 (8th) Sentinels "Love Rhythm"
70 (9th) Daniel Avery "Drone Logic"
83 (DNQ) Melt Yourself Down "Fix My Life"
91 (38th) Amnesia Scanner "AS Crust"
101 (4th) Virtual Self "Ghost Voices"
128 (10th) Blanck Mass “House vs. House”
