Is anyone following this then? Quite a lot of coverage on Sky News. In to week 2 now and set to last up to 6 weeks. I think he'll either get off and there'll be riots or be found guilty of a lesser charge, say 3rd degree murder. Was interesting yesterday, other serving cops speaking up against him, one of their own.

The defence case is that he had a heart problem anyway, shown on autopsy, which meant he could have dropped dead any minute. Co-incidental that it was just then though surely? rolleyes.gif

Yeah I’m guessing he could have dropped dead at any minute with a heart condition but it is 100% that being pinned down with a knee pressing on his neck for 9 minutes wouldn’t have helped and was more likely the cause of death.

It’s like saying the man you shot dead was 90 years old, he could have died anyway.

The American justice system is crazy, so who knows really. I followed the trial fairly closely in the first week, but less so the previous week. I thought some of the witness stories were absolutely harrowing- definitely some unknown innocent victims in a lot of this, especially the guy who called the cops in the first place.

I'd like to say he will be convicted but even if he is, I suspect it will be on a lesser charge. I guess all the defence has to do is just put the smallest element of doubt in to the jury and then who knows. That would be a complete travesty of course and the defence argument is.. clutching straws and that's putting it gently.

Knowing how ridiculous the American justice system is, I have absolutely no doubt George Floyd's name will be dragged through the muddiest of muds and it's very sad. The whole heart condition argument is really stupid too.

The police surely don't want the riots to be repeated but at the same time a harsh sentence will set a precedent so the solution is a slightly firmer slap on the wrist (a couple of years in jail and out in like 6 months for good behaviour or whatever) which I predict will happen in the end.

I have zero faith in the US justice system delivering a conviction here, based on decades of precedent. Juries in the US almost always side with the Pigs regardless of the level of inappropriate force used.

I really really hope that this turns out to be an exception to the rule, or even better the start of a new precedent.

Sorry but the title 'George Floyd trial" is very misleading and insensitive, it makes it suggest that the innocent is being criminalised. It should read 'Derek Chauvin trial', please change the title.

Verdict due shortly, around 5pm EST so 10pm UK time. The fact the jury's reached a verdict quickly seems to tell commentators that he'll be quilty on one or more charges.

I suspect he will be found guilty on the two lower charges. Anything less then there will be chaos.

Guilty on all three charges! GOOD. Sentencing in late June.

He's going down for many years. Second degree murder carries a 40 year max. sentence. Some US experts predicting 12 year minimum.

It says a lot that I was still slightly unsure if he'd be fully convicted, but thankful for those fears to be proved wrong! A big step to showing that justice can still prevail even in today's world.

Great news. I hope his friends and family can find some sort of peace now.

This is just the very start. Still lots more to be done, but it's nice that there was actual justice for once.

Yeah thankfully the right outcome, and I was a little worried still that it wouldn't go completely the way that it did, so am a little shocked but obviously pleased that finally there is now some level of accountability for the police force in the US. Perhaps this court case and its outcome will be the beginning of things starting to change for the better, but that doesn't mean the campaigning should or will stop because the problems that existed before this brutal murder was caught on camera are still there and massive changes need to be made to policing both in America and here in the UK too.

Apparently there were only 6 police officer convictions for using deadly force while on duty in the past 10 or something years. If that's true then their system has a LONG way to go still and I'm sure the rats will just do everything in their power to go back to normal (until George Floyd 2.0 which is inevitable at this point given how forgetful Americans seem to be).

One huge case like this won't change shit unless people keep actively following up on their demands.

God Pav that statistic is shocking! I'm glad the right result happened, but it's infuriating that we even a) have the incident happen b) have to take a year to decide something that was so clear cut sad.gif
