It's no doubt in anyone's mind, that the ARTPOP era didn't run as smoothly as it could have. There were planned singles that never surfaced, there were music videos filmed and then scrapped, there were songs removed entirely from the album's tracklist, there was confusion over what was and wasn't a single. In short - it was an organisational mess for one reason or another!

But, with rose-tinted glasses and looking back considering a best-case-scenario, how would you have the ARTPOP era running now?

Here is how it actually went down:

SINGLE 1: "Applause" (Released: August 12, 2013)
PROMO SINGLE / SINGLE 2: "Do What U Want" (Released: October 21, 2013)
PROMO SINGLE: "Venus" (Released: October 28, 2013)
PROMO SINGLE: "Dope" (Released: November 4, 2013)
- ALBUM RELEASE November 6, 2013 -
SINGLE 3: "G.U.Y." (Released: March 28, 2014)

Single 1: Applause
Single 2: Gypsy
Promo single 1: G.U.Y.
Promo single 2: Dope
-album release-
Single 3: Do What U Want with Christina
Single 4: Sexxx Dreams

So~ I am by no means the biggest fan of Applause, but there's no denying it's a radio-friendly song and got the excitement up for the era. G.U.Y. as a promo single knowing that it wasn't the best choice of actual single. I mean, it is totally single worthy but the floppage still hurts. Dope is honestly continuing to mature into one of the best on the album and it was big as a promo single so I wouldn't change that at all.

Gypsy is the single that never was. It is so GLOBAL and radio friendly. It's such a beautiful song and so anthemic - give it a touring/live video if needed but it had to get a push! Do What U Want is still great but was obviously tarred by the feature. So have it with Christina (begrudingly~). Finally, go out with a BANG with one of her strongest and most fun album tracks. If it flops, oh well the era has been a success anyway x

My initial thought now that it was about right that an album that sparse and messy (in a good way) had such a messy rollout too. I think it fits the legacy - we have lots to talk about.

The commercially most potential tracks were released as singles, but the gap between DWUW and GUY was obviously too long. I adore the GUY video <3

Unlike some others, I don't find Gypsy commercially viable at all. I love it, but it is one of the lowest streamed songs on the album even now.

The singles could've been like:

Applause
Sexxx Dreams
G.U.Y.
Do What U Want or Artpop

The problem with Sexxx Dreams/DWUW/GUY is that they are all "sexy" songs in a way and represent the similar topic of being in charge but from a "submissive" undertone. So very hard to pick between them.

Gypsy is the last song on the album, so of course it doesn't get as streamed on a forgotten album!! It would have been a no.1 smash.

1. Gypsy beyond a DOUBT
2. DWUW with Christina
3. Sexx Dreams IF it has a remix and new production
4. Artpop song
5. Applause

Finished! GUY is beyond terrible.

Gypsy could've worked as the final single I guess.

It was one of TWO accessible songs on the album, alongside DWUW. It was the ONLY song that could have competed with Roar.

Listen to Gypsy and imagine it in 2013, a couple of weeks after Roar. It is a no.1.

What’s the comparison with Gypsy and Roar? Roar is one of the blandest songs Katy ever did.

The only possible singles sequence for this album is almost the same as what happened:

1st single: Applause
1st promo single/2nd single: DWUW with R. Kelly
2nd promo single: Venus
3rd promo single: Dope

G.U.Y. shouldn't have been released as a single, and if it was released as a single, it would only have a chance to shine if it was released in January, not in March. Also, she should have paid radios to play this song, just like everyone in the industry does. If she had cut that messy video's budget in half and filled radio stations' pockets with money, this song would have been a hit.

The problem of the era was the mess in the choice of singles and the DWUW video being canceled, and, of course, the breakup with Troy, a real manager, for the arrival of an amateur as her manager.

Both are massive pop songs with big, catchy choruses and wide appeal. Applause has none of that.

So glad to see ARTPOP getting all the recognition, all these years later.

In an ideal world, I think if she released a kind of ART/POP strategy single release for this campaign, that would've been cool...

01. Aura (ART) the final piece to the Paparazzi/Telephone trilogy, as intended.
02. Applause (POP) with the original video and VMA performance.
03. Venus (ART) *dual double release akin to If I Were A Boy/Single Ladies*
04. DWUW ft. Xtina (POP) *dual double release* Xtina version instead of R.Kelly of course, I've always preferred that anyway! Two pop divas coming together!
(Album Release)
05. Sexxx Dreams (ART) First post-album single, would'nt been expected to hit but omfg the visuals alone would serve.
06. Gypsy (POP) I normally hate tour footage music videos like New Romantics/Red, but think this would've worked for Gypsy and also she had C2C to move on with.

1st single: Sexxx Dreams (with verses reworked a bit)
2nd single: Do What U Want (with someone else other than R Kelly and an actual video)
**ALBUM RELEASE**
3rd single: I Wanna Be With You (in its original form over Christmas/January)
4th single: Gypsy

Guarantee this era would have been MUCH bigger!

StupidLove, I adore your more conceptual approach with art + pop!

Also agree about the tour footage for Gypsy especially that late in the game.

Awww thank you! cheer.gif

If they filmed the ArtRave Tour, surely they could've used footage from that. I think it would be the only Gaga song I can imagine a tour-footage video to, to be honest.

Yahoo filmed the Paris concert, it's on Youtube, but of course they would need more material to make a Gypsy video
