In case you aren't aware of this plan (failed in 2014 after protests), the Tories are taking the Covid opportunity to push it through without discussion and you have 3 weeks to opt out of it, after which your data will be sold to the highest bidders. So if you aren't bothered about private companies having access to your most-personal data of all in order to flog you stuff or target you with whatever they are selling then please don't bother reading this....

The NHS website insists that all data will be anonymised and that it will not be sold for any marketing purposes. However, it does NOT say how easy it is for that to be changed. It isn't clear whether it would require legislative change or if it could be done at the stroke of a minister's pen. Call me cynical but I suspect that means that a change could be slipped through without people noticing (as they were hoping would be the case with this revival of the 2014 plan).

Is this happening in Wales? If so, I’ll certainly be opting out.

Not so much "cynical" as "wise" I'd say! Given they are trying to introduce this with no announcement having previously been made aware of the strength of opinion against it, I'd be very suspicious of the motives. Given the earth-shattering success of the NHS and government IT systems and their total and complete safety from getting hacked, which has never happened ever in the history of the universe, and their record for paying billions for dodgy IT systems from mates and anyone who donates to the Tory Party, I'd assume the chances of your personal data remaining private is about as likely as Johnson getting a recognition from Mensa for his ability to deeply analyse any topic you care to throw at him (as long as it's done by someone with big tits, obv). |

I opted out and got a text saying my information "will not be shared for research and planning". They are clearly hoping that a message like that will persuade people that they are being selfish and get them to change their mind.

Thing is, if I'm understanding it right, if you don't opt-out now then anything that gets entered in future on your medical database will be fair game. Like a Doctor's opinion that you're a hypochondriac. Or someone passes on a social disease to you. Or you have piles.
Research & planning for what? You go to the doctor to get treatment for something you have now and it should be blatantly obvious what the NHS is spending on any number of medications already, and therefore how many people have this or that. Dido Harding is getting all wet at the prospect of monetising this info for sale. It's all about money, not patients. I have yet to read an example of how this is going help either the NHS or the people who are providing the data. Expect to get pop-ups from firms flogging Roid creams - why else would they pay for this data.... |

Can’t access the opt out page because I’m outwith the UK 🙃
I’m concerned only because I don’t know what data still exists from when I was registered in Manc for a couple of years. If there’s nothing and it’s all be tagged back to Scotland then I’m champion but otherwise then there’s potentially my whole history up there for grabs and that’s no happening |
