Today marks 20 years since Madonna commenced her Drowned World Tour, her first in eight years! The tour was split into five segments - Cyber-Punk, Geisha, Cowgirl, Spanish, and Ghetto - and comprised largely material from 'Ray of Light' and 'Music', leaving room for just three 80s songs. It became the highest-grossing tour of 2001 by a solo act (fourth overall).

What are your favourite performances from this tour? Did you attend? ohmy.gif

I was devastated for days i couldn't get london tickets.

No idea why i didnt try and get from a second party.

I love this tour because it is so different. It is more dark and has less songs for the casual fan.
It is also the last tour where she didnt re-edit everything for the DVD release.

My favourite tour of hers, probably because it's the first full show I watched of her on DVD, but mostly (I think) because of the great setlist (ROL and Music being two incredible albums), a raw/dark vibe to it, and Madonna herself being at the height of her career both vocally and creatively.

I watched this tour in its entirety today; it's not a tour that gets a lot of recognition but it's all kinds of amazing. I love the whirlwind of genres explored in the first act alone - ambient pop, acid-techno/electropop, grunge, psychedelic pop, electronic dance - yet it somehow works. The Geisha segment is spellbinding, particularly 'Paradise (Not For Me)' and 'Sky Fits Heaven' but the whole segment is like a piece of theatre. The acoustic numbers in Cowgirl allow for some lovely performances and put the focus right on the music, although it's the sexy 'Human Nature' that's my favourite of this section. 'Music Sounds Better With You' being incorporated into 'Holiday' is a perfect fit and 'Music' makes for a joyous, celebratory finale.

It's interesting to see a setlist with just four songs performed that pre-date the tour's associated albums. Obviously 'Ray of Light' and 'Music' were huge albums for Madonna so it doesn't feel lacking in hits, however I'd still say this it was a brave move given this was her first tour in eight years. There would have been a lot of fans who had never seen her perform before so I wonder if this was something that bothered people at the time. Still, from my perspective, this is what makes the tour unique and allowed Madonna to focus on her own narrative rather than shoe-horning in previous hits.

Can we go back to these days?! drama.gif Thankfully the rest of the tours of the 2000s still allow you to enjoy the show no problem (save for perhaps the vocal editing on S&S) but after that...
