Today marks 35 years since the release of 'Papa Don't Preach', the second single released from 'True Blue'. Inspired by gossip heard outside the recording studio, the song deals with teenage pregnancy; Madonna takes on the role of the expecting teen who attempts to break the news to her father. She explores her vocal delivery to express the range of emotions felt, using her lower register in the verses to show sincerity and a passionate, yearning vocal in the choruses to show desperation. The production is more mature than previously expected of Madonna songs, including a Vivaldian style intro. The song was greatly received by critics who praised the change in direction and the strong pop hooks and it became a huge hit across the world, reaching #1 in both the UK and US. 35 years on, what are your thought and memories of 'Papa Don't Preach'? |

definitely one of her best ever, possibly in my Madonna top 3, this is just so incredibly perfect and stills sounds as good now as it did back in the day

Such a perfect M song and video - I love this song and this era, every single released from True Blue is a 10 - I don't think she's ever had an album where the singles were so consistently good and such big hits - all classics.

I have SO MUCH love for this song
 The production is so infectious, her vocals are so desperate and beautiful and the lyrical content is so powerful. This song was playing as I was working to walk one day and it helped push me towards coming out to my mum so it has a lot of personal significance for me too! A perfect song that has stood the test of time - 35 years old and still so relevant, relatable and real!
