It was confirmed a short while ago that the official host city, first to be awarded under the weird new application system, is Brisbane in Australia!

Some 85% of the venues are already in place or will only be temporary constructions with the central showpiece set to be The Gabba, the Brisbane Cricket Ground (nickname comes from the suburb Woolloongabba where the stadium is located), which is being renovated for the Games, well more like rebuild Wembley style.

Bris has previously bid to host the 92 games and has hosted the 82 Commonwealth Games and some events of the 2000 Sydney Games and 18 Gold Coast Commonwealths we’re Held in the city. Bris has been a venue for both the Rugby Union and League World Cups and will be a host city for the FIFA 23 women’s World Cup

The City Of Gold Coast will host some events, as will the Sunshine Coast Region along with venues in the Redlands & Ipswich on the edge of the city and football games will be held in Townsville and Cairns in Far North Queensland, Toowoomba in The SE Queensland region and also in Sydney and Melbourne

Brissy was elected unopposed but formal bids were submitted by Qatar (who couldn’t bribe their way into the sports books this time), Jakarta, Ahmedabad (IN), Madrid and a joint bid of 13 (!) German cities of the Rhine-Ruhr metro area (Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Köln, Bonn, Aachen, Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Krefeld, Leverkusen, Mönchengladbach, Oberhausen and finally, Recklinghausen) with sailing in Kiel on the Baltic coast.

The new process was evicerated by the unsuccessful German bid who called it „incomprehensible“ and „hard to surpass in terms of non-transparency“

What do you think of the new process And the new host city? Personally I am so stoked for Brisbane!!! It’s a city I love a lot and hold close to my heart but is also so unknown and unappreciated on the global stage. It’s a great chilled city full of amazing people and I hope that this really permanently puts it on the map

Quite like this new process and happy for Brisbane. A city also that loves its sport!

A great choice!

I suppose it not being in Europe bodes well for GB hosting it in 2036? There's been reports over the last couple of years that a bid is planned for it or 2040.

Don't know too much about Brisbane but from what I'm reading here it sounds like a good choice to be hosting the games! Can't say I really understand the new bidding format but I wasn't really aware of the current one either.

Following two world cities, that's a good choice for a sporting yet safe city, great choice - 2000 was the first Olympics I ever remember watching so it'll be nice to have it back in Australia again.

If this bidding process has avoided dodgy bids from countries that are clearly not ready, it's doing well. Olympics are a lot better than FIFA on that front, only really Rio was a poor choice lately - Tokyo would have been amazing under normal circumstances and I have good confidence in the currently announced lineup.

Happy for this. I’ve never been to Brisbane, only passed through on my way Central Queensland.

It’ll be interesting though. I’m not sure if the Olympics still create the buzz they once did.

I am so happy for Brisbane and all of my mates over there are thrilled. It’s a huge huge deal for them.

Im not surprised most of you don’t know Bris so well. It’s my favourite city on earth. It has super favourable weather conditions in that it’s mostly dry and the temp fluctuates from 20 in the winter to 30 in the summer. It’s humid as hell but very stable weather wise. It’s a city that loves to be outdoors and sporty because the weather is so good for it. Its super built up in the centre and then it’s Miles of suburbs. So it’s very Green and laid back and not hectic at all. It’s got a good vibe and a great food culture too. Plus it’s well connected with the wider metro area of South East Queensland (Home to ¾ of QLDs population) and the rest of The State. Theres beautiful national Parks all around the City and the People Are so friendly and chill.

For a long time it’s been seen as a big country town but it’s ambitious and steely and determined and has for a while been ranked highly in terms of most liveable cities. In fact, it’s actually 10th on the EUI 2021 list and 19th on the Monocle list along with 35th on the Mercer list. Higher than any UK city. It’s an emerging global city that tends to be overlooked in favour of Sydney and Melbourne which is a critical error I think. Sydney has a lot of the drawbacks of London in that it’s busy and cramped but has nicer weather. And I don’t rate Melbourne at all personally.

Culturally there’s a lot going on in Brisbane. Away from the games it will be a great city for people to visit and explore for the first time and over the next decade it’s gonna become so much more of a venue for tourists which i am super happy about, finally get some better flight options there!! Brisbanites really want this and really want to show off Brissie for all it has to offer so they will do an incredible job of Hosting and making People welcome.

I am defo going to go to the games. I can’t wait!
