Another week at #2 for Unfaithful in the Throwbacks, painful to see. Although at least Hips Don't Lie is a worthy opponent unlike McFly's sacrilege to Queen.

Throwback to when the Great British Public somehow decided Swagger Jagger was the best song of the week. huh.gif laugh.gif

Dermot Kennedy
Better Days

1st single from forthcoming studio album
Released: 28th July 2021
Label: Riggins Recording / Interscope Records / Island Records

Video

Biography

Dermot Kennedy’s rip-roaring, free-flowing folk-pop grew out of years singing over rowdy crowds at local bars and open mics and in the streets of Dublin. Born in 1991, the singer/songwriter was raised in the small Irish village of Rathcoole, where he began writing songs as a teenager before studying classical music at Maynooth University and forming folk band Shadows and Dust. He soon set off on his own, busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street, the same spot favored by famous street musicians like Glen Hansard, The Frames frontman and Once actor. Kennedy built up his raspy, throat-ripping howls on the pavement, but found his largest following online after he self-released romantic ballads like 2015’s “An Evening I Will Not Forget” and 2016’s “After Rain”. A larger audience exposed him to a few key producers, including Stephen Kozmeniuk (Koz) and Mike Dean, both of whom have helped enhance the poetic intimacy of Kennedy’s songwriting with rumbling beats and expansive electronic production. Finding a delicate balance between soaring folk and understated hip-hop has been the key to Kennedy’s sound, starting with his 2019 debut album, Without Fear. His strengths come in turning quiet melodies into rousing anthems, including “Power Over Me”, a propulsive paean that captures the intoxicating rush of becoming enraptured, and “Outnumbered”, which feels almost gospel-like in its cathartic chorus. Meanwhile, his voice—a slightly weathered mix of grit and gravel—ties it all together, bringing the raw intensity he learned as a busker to pop charts around the world. - Apple Music

Swagger Jagger seemed like such an obvious #1 at the time but definitely seems baffling now that it did so well.
In fact that week in 2011 was for the most part rather poor, only Louder from that lot has really aged well, but I did really enjoy Down with the Trumpets and How We Roll at the time.

I loved 2006 SO much, my tastes have never been so in line with the charts - every week another all-time fave entered the top 10 to join a load of others - this time Cascada <3 Shakira, Lily Allen and Rogue Traders were all in my top five of that year and I still love the Paolo Nutini, Christina and Rihanna songs too.

I was really happy this week in 2001 when Ian Van Dahl went top three too, albeit taking advantage of a slow week to climb there. I think Geri was the highest new entry, she was certainly tipped for top three with that if not higher so I'm not sure how she ended up as low as No.8, albeit less than 3k from the top three the sales were so close.

2016 on the other hand is possibly the worst the charts had ever been for me, too much generic 'of its time' type stuff that hung around forever.

I'd forgotten that My Future is a whole year old now!

2006 is my favourite of the throwback weeks and has been for the past few weeks! Such classics among them!

Yeah sales are very close together in the middle of that 2001 Top 10, could easily have been a complete re-arrangment that week.

Trash! wub.gif wub.gif What a great #1 that would have made, recently found out from Gezza's thread that it could have done so in a significant amount of other weeks in 1996 with the sales it took. Robbie Williams murdering Freedom is the lowlight of that chart for sure.

2006 is a bit of a mixed bag for me. One hand you have well regarded greats as Hips Don't Lie, Unfaithful, Everytime We Touch, Smile, Voodoo Child (a bit more forgotten these days sadly). Then there's Paris Hilton's attempt at a music career and two of the worst offenders of the mid 00s singer-songwriter borefest trend (James Morrison, Paolo Nutini).

Controversially I'd say 2016 is my favourite here in terms of how many good songs there are in the top 10, Calum Scott and Shawn Mendes aside all great.

Biography

British rapper KSI made as much of a name for himself with his online videos and boxing as he did with his music, but the multi-faceted entertainer wore many hats as he built his empire of one. He moved from satirical songs in his earliest days into more nuanced songwriting and production on his breakthrough 2015 single "Lamborghini," refining his sound even more on subsequent projects like the venomous 2018 EP Disstracktions.

Born Olajide Olatunji, KSI was known as KSIOlajideBT in 2008 when he became a regular video game commentator, uploading his videos to the web, most of them focused on the FIFA series. It was a footballer who inspired him to try his hand at rap as Emile Heskey was the topic of "Heskey Time," a satirical rap that kicked off a series of football-mocking songs, including 2012's "Sweaty Goals" with Randolph. In 2013 he joined rapper Sway on his single "No Sleep," and in 2014 he appeared on producer Droideka's track "Get Hyper." In 2015 he dropped his own track, "Lamborghini" featuring P-Money, along with "Keep Up," which was also the title cut for 2016's debut KSI EP. His book KSI: I Am a Bellend appeared that same year and was released under the title KSI: I Am a Tool in the United States. He was briefly signed to Island Records but cut ties with the label after the release of 2016 EP Jump Around. The next several years found KSI staying busy with content creating, boxing, and a growing music career, working independently to trickle out singles like 2017's "Creature" and projects like the 2018 EP Disstracktions. He became more involved in boxing, escalating beefs with other online video creators into full-on white-collar boxing matches. Particularly spectacular was his dispute with American Internet personality and occasional music-maker Logan Paul. In 2019, KSI signed a deal with RBC Records, immediately issuing his first single "Down Like That" on November 7 of that year. The song featured cameo appearances from Rick Ross, S-X, and Lil Baby and peaked at number ten on the U.K. Singles Chart. He followed this success with second single, "Wake Up Call," featuring Trippie Redd, in January of 2020. His debut full-length, Dissimulation, arrived in May of that year. Featuring collaborators from Jeremih to Offset, the album demonstrated the musician's skill on the mike, as well as his proficiency in genres from trap to Afro-swing.
