Thought we could use a companion piece to the Political/History Books thread for those of us Philistines who can only focus on videos.
Drop good political videos in here - or bad ones as long as we can deconstruct them. Usual things apply - you are not immune to propaganda, don't go too deep down the rabbit-hole, balanced sources, do your own research etc. not exactly balanced but a good summary video that I enjoyed recently that goes down a list of some of the current left political Youtubers and who their content is for: |

I tend to watch explainer videos more than anything to help me try and understand how something works. Eg CPG Grey on electoral systems.
But that also applies to non-political topics too. I just like to learn and understand new things and try and stay as neutral as possible on my sources but inevitably will end up with a left wing slant. I know that to be the case because the YouTube algorithm is yet to turn me into a nazi after 14+ years |

Explainer videos are excellent. Helps you know when you're being fed bullshit - including from the people teaching you things mind you - if you didn't study much in the way of critical analysis.
I can rarely resist a long, academically-sourced and verbose takedown of some misinformation or conservative talking point though. |

I am a big fan of Novara Media - they have a whole variety of content up for viewing but their evening show Tyskysour has got me through the last 18 months.
Also I massively stan for Ash Sarkar who brilliantly takes down and belittles the kind of lazy commentators that the British media love to platform. 'OK, continue about the book you haven't read.' That SASS ! *.* |

Ash and Owen Jones are probably the best for British-related political content at the moment, good that they're focusing a bit more on Youtube because it has a potentially huge audience - never got around to watching Tysky Sour before now but I've watched a few of Owen Jones' interviews when they're with someone who looks interesting.

It seems to be back already. So either an error/hacking or they really meant to take it down and have now already caved to backlash.
(Never heard of them before but I'm now intrigued and will watch a couple of their videos today so uh, thanks YouTube  )YT does suck in this regard anyhow, another political YouTuber I watch has had their channel suspended on multiple occasions and almost deleted for the crime of...debunking covid misinformation (cos their shit AI can't tell the difference between spreading and debunking covid misinfo) |

It does feel a bit sinister though. Least it's been resolved now! |

It does happen sometimes to mediumly-sized channels that you'd think should obviously be free of this sort of thing if they have 100k+ subscribers and are putting out videos regularly without seemingly anything being done wrong (I've lost count of the amount of hobbyist review channels I've seen who've had theirs deleted without explanation, sometimes not even coming back up and it does even happen to organisations like this who you'd think would be safe from it).
Quite unfortunate that they're reliant on the whims of this unreliable platform to get their message out. It is an opportune moment for a bit of publicity though, I'm always willing Novara and allies to grow bigger, they're one of the best hopes for decent political commentary coming from the UK right now. Their interview with John McDonnell yesterday is a fantastic get ahead of this Budget. |

Turns out the decision was made by a human, so it was 'human error'.
It just highlights how much power the likes of Amazon, Facebook, Alphabet etc. have and how unaccountable they are for any decisions that they take - which could effectively censor or silence anyone trying to whistleblow. I mean it's hardly that much of a coincidence that Facebook/Whatsapp etc. all went down just days after Frances Haugen went public and Maria Ressa (the first journalist since the 1930s to win) won the Noble Peace Prize and warned of these companies basically bringing upon a new era of fascism. But that's enough tinfoil hat conspiracy theories for tonight... ! |
