New music seems to be imminent — they have been sending sheet music to fans and playing a benefit show tonight. I can't think of many albums more disappointing than 'Everything Now' so I'll be forming a prayer circle for this one. I know feelings are mixed on 'Reflektor' but it is up there with their best for me. I have faith...

They are definitely a band where each album is not as good as the previous one, but that was generally gradual until the drop off to Everything Now which has to go down as about my biggest musical disappointment. Have very little faith in this, best expectations are that it sits somewhere between that and Reflektor.

To be honest, the only song I’ve ever heard from them is the title track ‘Everything Now’! (Which I absolutely love)

What would you lot recommend from them?

yes, go back and start with Funeral, agree with the comment that each also has been a bit worse with the last album being a major let down

funnily my fav track ever from AF is Tunnels which is track 1 from album 1 biggrin.gif

they are also an amazing band to see live, highly recommended if you have the chance

I shall give the first album a listen later!

I’m curious by the mediocre reception to their most recent album, because as I understand the title track had a good reception (and is still their third most popular track on Spotify). Does the rest of the album sound completely different?

At frickin' last wub.gif I agree their last album wasn't the strongest compared to their other work (the title track was great, but generally the music itself was just stuff they've done better before), but it's been such a long time since then, it's surely got to be good x

I echo others that if you're looking to explore them more, Funeral is the best place to start!

'Everything Now' (the song) was great but everything that followed was a mess — lyrically, thematically, sonically — it all fell flat.

There has to be someone else here who loves 'Reflektor' as much as I do? I genuinely think it is only second to 'Funeral'

Oh for sure, it has some of my favourite Arcade Fire songs on it. I think it's the James Murphy dancey co-production that sells it and makes it more to my taste. The only minor criticism I have is the slightly disjointed first half with “Flashbulb Eyes” and “You Already Know” kind of ruining the momentum a bit; however you've got David Bowie's vocals on opener “Reflektor” and the album bookended also with the wonderful “Afterlife”.

If you love “Everything Now”, then you may also love “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)” which is from an album they did several years earlier but possibly shows the first signs of a move in this direction.

I'm excited that you're getting to listen for the first time, it's a great piece of art. I did like the singles that I heard before it, but “Rebellion (Lies)” was the song that drew me in during summer '05. I can still remember seeing the video on MTV2 for the first time and thinking 'what IS this?', I then got the album that autumn after enjoying the next single “Wake Up” and finally got the hype that had been building for most of the year.

Sleeping is giving in,
so lift those heavy eyelids.

Pitchfork love Arcade Fire, or at least they used to, their reviews nail it imho...

Murphy likely plays a large part in why I love the album so much — almost a decade later and I could still bathe in the production on 'Supersymmetry'. I do think the second half of the album is stronger — 'Porno' is such an underrated gem and that riff on 'It's Never Over (Hey Orpheus)' is fantastic.

The Lightning I and II are available on streaming platforms within the album

They're quite typical of their earlier sound... on first listen I enjoyed but am not blown away. The second part is the one that grabs your attention more.

Ooft, that will do nicely heart.gif

Sounds like a real anthem, love the switch-up in sounds and gradual build-up, very much reflective of their older work, but that's not a bad thing at all.
