Today marks 35 years since 'Locomotion' was first released in Australia as Kylie's debut single. Originally a hit for Little Eva in 1962, the song was performed impromptu by Kylie and the rest of the Neighbours cast at a football charity event. Kylie was then signed to Mushroom Records to release the song as a single in Australia; the song became a huge hit, spending 7 weeks at number one and becoming the best selling single of 1987. The success of 'Locomotion' resulted in Kylie being signed to PWL Records who gave Kylie her first worldwide hit with 'I Should Be So Lucky'. It was later given a remake for its worldwide re-release under the new title of 'The Loco-motion' and became a chart success across the world, including the UK, which saw Kylie achieve the highest debut position for a female artist when it opened at #2, and even the US, where it remains Kylie's best charting single (#3).

35 years on, what are your thoughts and memories of 'Locomotion'?

35 years and how far she has come, i love the loco motion and always have done but only the fast version, i really dont like the slow version at all as i think it drains all the good out of the song, loco motion remains one of my fave kylie singles and i think its also one of her signature hits to the wider public.

It's became one of those songs over the years that I enjoy if I hear it on a night out, but I literally never choose to listen to it.

Not my favourite Kylie tune at all. The abbey road version is best. The other versions are just a bit cheesy.

I actually quite like the Abbey Roads version, it makes a nice break from all the slower ones if I play the album through. (which is rare)

It is just as cheesy as the original if not moreso though. laugh.gif

Kylie vocally at her best in the 2014 version, really suits her. The Golden Tour version along with TARS/2014 versions are the best though after loathing the 87/88 recording for years I can appreciate it now in all it's tacky 80s glory.

The Abbey Roads version isnt bad at all to be fair to it, its better than a few of the other slow/jazz versions of it but the original remains best followed by the golden tour version, id like her to perform the fast original version again on a tour, when she did the medley on Saturday night take away it was the original used and absolutely loved it even thought it was only short.

I remember this being played at school discos and I had a compilation album that had it on (Dance Party, to be exact) so it was one of my earlier introductions to Kylie's music outside the Light Years/Fever era that I grew up in. It's not one I often seek out but it is a bop and a good, fun party song. The Golden Tour version does really revitalise the song, I had really gotten into Donna Summer's back catalogue around 2018 so it was great to hear this mixed with 'Bad Girls'.

I'm a fan of the Abbey Road version too - I agree that it makes a nice change in pace among the ballads.

Listening to the original 1987 version is really interesting, it's a different sound, very guitar heavy, and a lower vocal to what we're used to from early days Kylie.

The Locomotion is a great party song.
It was a by chance recording for Kylie initially but opened so many life changing doors for Kylie.

Pure coincidence but I was out last night and the pub dj was playing 80s and 90s music and loco motion and better the devil you know we're both played.
