Dubai, family and business: Robbie Williams opens up about his plans for 2022
Brit-pop legend speaks with Time Out ahead of his NYE show

By Keyta HawkinsDecember 30, 2021

Dubai is one of the ultimate destinations for mind-blowing New Year’s Eve celebrations. Not only are there an endless array of incredible events but there’s also a star-studded line-up of celebrity performances to ring in 2022.

This includes the likes of Brit-pop legend Robbie Williams, who will be dazzling crowds with a 70-minute performance at Atlantis The Palm this New Year’s Eve, as part of its glitzy black-tie gala dinner.

The chart-topper, who is behind unmissable hits such as Rock DJ, Angels and Candy will be delivering some of his best-loved tunes on the evening. There will also be a Guinness World Records attempt for the world’s largest drinking glass pyramid.

Time Out Dubai caught up with the British artist ahead of his much anticipated New Year’s Eve performance as he lifts the lid on what he has in store for 2022.

What are your plans for your time in Dubai?

“Sadly, this trip is a very short one for me, but I always look forward to the great food in Dubai, and it’s probably the best place on earth to enjoy fireworks on New Year’s Eve.”

Do you have a favourite place in Dubai?

“I feel like Dubai is quickly becoming my second home – the last show I played before COVID was in Dubai at the Pointe, and I really enjoyed playing there. Atlantis The Palm will be one to remember for a long time as well. The Palm is a special place to stay, and it all just feels very special when the plane is coming into land.”

Can you share your best memory in Dubai?

“I was here on holiday with my family earlier in 2021, and it’s just such a magical place – both for adults and children. My kids went swimming with dolphins at Atlantis, and the look of wonder and pleasure on their faces is something I’ll remember for a long time.”

Can you share what’s on the horizon for you in 2022?

“I have a new album coming out, and I’ll be doing some touring too. I really hope to be coming to Dubai for more shows and make it a regular fixture in my diary as I love performing here. Over the past two years I’ve been working on creating lots of art, which I’ll be launching in 2022. I also have some very exciting business plans that I’ll be launching, which I’ll let you know all about later in the year.”

What is the biggest lesson you learnt in 2021?

“Avoid getting COVID, as it’s not so pleasant.”

How are you looking at spending your New Year’s Day?

“Sadly, I’ll be on a plane back to Los Angeles, but on the bright side I am going back to my family.”

Do you have any New Year’s resolutions?

“To continue to be more kind to myself and others”.

What is one assumption people always make about you that’s wrong?

“That I’m not kind to myself or others”.

Can you give any advice for anyone reading this?

“Believe that 2022 will be your year”.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

“Even though I’ll be leaving on January 1, I hope I’ll be coming back to Dubai many times in 2022 and 2023. It has a special place in my heart”.

Robbie Williams rings in 2022 with rousing New Year’s Eve show in Dubai
The British pop-star performed a greatest hits show at Atlantis, The Palm

Robbie Williams celebrated the arrival of 2022 by rolling back the years in an exclusive gala performance. The British pop star was in vintage form with a crowd-pleasing show at Dubai’s Atlantis, The Palm, that should set the tone for a landmark year for the artist. The former Take That singer will celebrate the 25th anniversary of his solo career in 2022. Stepping on stage just before 11pm and clad in a gold sequenced jacket, Williams delivered an almost chronological greatest hits set. Beginning with the triumphant Let Me Entertain You, from 1997 debut album Life Thru a Lens, the 47-year-old singer belted out a catalogue of hits representing the evolution of British pop music over the last 25 years. Come Undone soared on the back of powerful guitars recalling the Britpop era, while the somewhat kitschy Rock DJ and Kids aged surprisingly well, courtesy of those stadium ready choruses.

“This is my first gig two years,” Williams told the crowd. “I am trying to remind myself who I am and what I do.”

However, the reality of the present did manage to crash through the nostalgic set. Perhaps, for the first time in his career, Williams had to ask the crowd to follow social distancing measures by moving away from the front of the stage. “This is the reality of the day with Covid and we have to be safe” he said. “As, you know, there is nothing I like more than having a big gap between me and the people.” The distance aside, tracks like the heartwarming Feel, She’s the One and Better Man managed to envelop the crowd and served as an exhilarating prelude to the New Year’s Eve countdown and fireworks.

Speaking to The National prior to the show, Williams said an encore Dubai appearance is planned later in the year. “Sadly, this time I’m only here for about 36 hours,” he said.“I will be back a few times this year though, I have big plans in Dubai.”While not revealing what they are, it will encompass what will be a busy year for Williams. “I’m going to be in Melbourne later this year filming the movie, with (Australian filmmaker) Michael Gracey directing and who has also written the screenplay,” he said. “I’m really excited for this, and I’ve been very involved working with Michael who’s a friend”. Better Man is billed as a warts-and-all look into Williams’s life, tracing his transition from boyband Take That to solo stardom, in addition to his much-publicised struggles with mental health. It is a subject Williams is open about in interviews and 2004’s unflinching biography Feel by Chris Heath. “Talking about this is all part of the therapy for me, and hearing that other people relate to my experiences makes me feel good,” he said. “For sure, hearing other people’s stories has inspired me, and I hope in telling mine I’ve been able to help one or two people out there too.”

New album will be a mixed bag
Williams also plans to return to the studio, to record a follow-up to 2016’s The Heavy Entertainment Show. “2022 is my 25th Anniversary as a solo album, so I’ll have an album out later in the year to celebrate that,” he said. “It will have some new songs on, and some new versions of old songs.” Some of the re-worked tracks will come from Sing When You're Winning. bounce.gif Released in 2000, the album was a global success and spawned hits Rock DJ, Kids and Better Man. Williams is proud of the album, yet surprised by its runaway success: "Sometimes it’s a moment in time, and sometimes it’s a wave that happens – it’s hard to explain and even harder to plan."

While glad to be back on the Dubai stage, Williams said the time off the road, due to Covid-19, has been beneficial. In addition to turning his hand to painting, he said the pandemic taught him to get a better grip of his personal and professional life. "Family time is important, and so is being creative," he said. "The last two years have been very different for me – usually I spend long chunks of time away from my family, but I’ve been able to be around my family a lot and be around the kids as they grow older, which has been very special.

“I’ve also spent time being creative, including some art which I’ll be revealing to the world in 2022.”

Rob seems to spend a lot of his time in a cycle of 'angst' , makes him seem very vulnerable . Not sure that plant based diet suits him unsure.gif

He did a lovely tribute to Shane smile.gif

Beautiful words he used.

I just wish they wouldn't fiddle with him. Leave him as he is -with his grey hair, no botox, no dye, no nothing -just the worlds most handsome man happy.gif

and yes I agree -he does look vulnerable because he is so slight at the moment. Give him a juicy burger. smile.gif

'An Evening With Robbie Williams' will now span two nights

The show will also feature exclusive footage of Better Man, the upcoming Williams biopic that is currently being filmed in Melbourne. Both shows are set to be filmed, with footage from them to then be used in Better Man.

The film was originally announced in December, and is set to be directed by The Greatest Showman‘s Michael Gracy. No further castings have been made public since the film was announced.
