Gallup were (if you didn't know) the compilers of the charts between 1983 and 1994 and took over from the BRMB who themselves had compiled the charts from 1969.

Actual weekly sales have recently come to light and are now presented to you in the same vein as the current 1994 thread. My thanks go to Robbie and kobyhadrain for sourcing the information and presenting it.

We're up to 1984 so no better way to celebrate the golden age of the charts!

Relax and enjoy all the hits as we discover the year two tribes went to war in:

14TH JANUARY

New Year and a new No 1 as the Flying Pickets don’t quite create a new chart record but they do tumble 1-10 (19,618) with “Only You” as the former chart topper feels the cold winter chill. The record remains with Harry Belefonte’s “Mary Boy Child” which fell 1-12 back in early 1958, The Flying Pickets’ fall is also mirrored by last week’s runner-up Slade who similarly falls 2-11 in the January reshuffle.

So that’s what’s out but what’s in? Well the main news is that Paul McCartney scores his first solo No 1 single as “Pipes Of Peace” ascends 9-1 on a new low sale for the 80s of 38,590 copies which is significantly below the 84,286 registered by Phil Collins in the same week last year and would have placed him at No 16 last week! McCartney has now had a No 1 single as a solo act, as part of a duet (with Stevie Wonder), as a trio (Wings) and a quartet (The Beatles) something that no other act can claim. He’s now had 22 top 10 singles since the Beatles split, which is still three less than the fab four had, but is on target to finally top that tally at some point in the decade.

From the old to the new with Howard Jones chasing McCartney all the way with “What Is Love” which is only his second single but it now becomes his biggest seller as it flies 10-2 on a sale of 34,051 to eclipse the No 3 peak of debut “New Song”. His first album will be out in March this year for those waiting impatiently. Completing an all climbing top 3 Status Quo rise 5-3 (28,764) with the party themed “Margarita Time” which despite their 16 year chart career becomes just their 4th top 3 and first since 1980’s “What You’re Proposing”.

Only one new entry to discuss this week and that comes from Frankie Goes To Hollywood. The genesis of the group stems from the late 70s punk scene in Liverpool and through several name changes and members eventually formed in its current line up a few years back. A John Peel session and an appearance on the tube convinced wizard producer Trevor Horn that something could be done with them and he wasn’t wrong with “Relax” powering 35-6 (22,916) thanks to a memorable TOTP performance. The song has been accompanied by some rather suggestive marketing ads and a video which was refused by both the BBC and MTV for being too offensive, a new video is currently in the making to help promote the track, indeed the song is now in its eighth week on the chart and has so far sold 64,209 copies to date.

Elsewhere good news for Billy Joel with “Tell Her About It” continuing to improve 6-4 (26,928) but a festive hangover engulfs the other tracks as fallers include Paul Young (3-5, 24,480), Culture Club (4-7, 21,539), Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers (7-8, 20,706) and Thompson Twins (8-9, 20,264). Some can celebrate though, Paul Young now has his biggest seller in “Love Of The Common People” and Culture club move over the 300,000 mark with “Victims” though they will still be disappointed with a marked comedown from the sales of their previous hit

1- PIPES OF PEACE- Paul McCartney (38,590)
2- WHAT IS LOVE- Howard Jones (34,051)
3- MARGUERITA TIME- Status Quo (28,764)
4- TELL HER ABOUT IT- Billy Joel (26,928)
5- LOVE OF THE COMMON PEOPLE- Paul Young (24,480)
6- RELAX- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (22,916)
7- VICTIMS- Culture Club (21,539)
8- ISLANDS IN THE STREAM- Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers (20,706)
9- HOLD ME NOW- Thompson Twins (20,264)
10- ONLY YOU- Flying Pickets (19,618)

One of the worst number one singles of the decade puke.gif Even worse than Phil Collins last time around drama.gif It’s a real shame that Howard Jones didn’t make it this week instead

However let’s just instead concentrate on Frankie and their masterpiece entering the top 10 for the first time wub.gif I love all their singles from the debut album (although oddly not much else from the album) and think they’ve all held up brilliantly

'Relax' is excellent wub.gif I do like the follow-up even more but both are massive highlights of this year.

'What Is Love?' would definitely be my preference from that top 2 as well, aw. The Frog Chorus supremacy tongue.gif

Some better tracks from Paul Young and Billy Joel there for me. Dolly and Kenny of course a classic and I love 'Victims' as well. 'Relax' a classic too evidently. I don't mind 'Pipes Of Peace' but I wouldn't regard it as classic Paul.

Don’t think solo Paul has many classics really - sorry Paul.

What Is Love is a great song. wub.gif

'What Is Love' is brilliant especially the epic chorus and that odd dubstep-eque synth bit before the final verse and chorus.

'Relax' is a classic too!

I like Pipes Of Peace. What Is Love is also very good, it wasn't too far from making number 1 then.

21ST JANUARY

It’s still number one and "Pipes Of Peace" had a better week at retail growing by 115% from an 80s nadir to 83,929, it certainly needed to but more on that in a moment. The album of the same name was released back in November and debuted at No 4 before falling as far as No 30 but is now revitalised as it re-peak’s at No 4 this week.

Obviously that isn’t really the big news this week, that revolves around “Relax” the record which now moves 6-2 (64,294) which is an increase of 195% week on week. On his Radio 1 breakfast show last Wednesday DJ Mike Read announced that he was not going to play the track again as its lyrics were obscene, a decision which was later in the week backed by both Radio One and the BBC though both are keen to point out that it is not “banned” but just not being played, the difference is unclear. The track has already had roughly 60 plays on Radio 1 without the full implications of its lyrics being examined but it has now created a media frenzy around the band and the song which has initially at least done little harm.

Onto the new entries, you’ll probably recognise the record at No 4 as the theme to the ITV series “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet” which is just coming to the end of its run. Its singer Joe Fagin was the musical director of Jim Davidson’s recent “Falklands Tour” but he landed the role of singing the opening and closing songs to the series and it is the track that closes each episode, “That’s Livin’ Alright” ,that impresses 45,730 buyers this week.

Just one behind Fagin is the star duet between Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler who jump 13-5 (44,557). Originally released by the Spaniels in 1958 it was a hit stateside for Dinah Washington and Brook Benton two years later when it topped the R & B Charts though it wasn’t a hit here and indeed never has been. It is Tyler’s fourth top 10 hit and a marked improvement on her last release “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” which bottomed out at No 47, for Shaky it’s his tenth top 10 single as he moves just 4 behind the current act with the most top tenners this decade, Madness.

Former guitarist with both Pink Floyd and Thin Lizzy, Snowy white has now gone solo with his debut solo album due sometime this summer, first single “Bird Of Paradise” moves 19-6 (32,215) as it takes advantage of the winter lull.

It’s taken some time to make the top 10 but Lionel Richie’s “Running With The Night” suddenly leaps 22-9 (20,468) after some TOTP exposure. It has so far moved 54-41-45-41-41-36-22- 9 an odd run that saw the track held up in the Christmas rush, more was expected of the follow up to “All Night Long (All Night)” which almost made No 1 back in November. Parent album “Can’t Slow Down” is now 13 weeks old and has yet to dip below No 11, this single features a guitar solo courtesy of Toto’s Steve Lukather, in what some are calling Richie’s version of Jackson’s “Beat It”.

Four fallers to cover briefly, Howard Jones tumbles 2-3 (56,933) even though he increased sales, Status Quo discover that cocktail hour is over and fall 3-7 (26,775), Billy Joel collapses 4-8 (25,500) and Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton drift 8-10 (18,411).

1- PIPES OF PEACE- Paul McCartney (83,929)
2- RELAX- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (64,294)
3- WHAT IS LOVE- Howard Jones (56,933)
4- THAT’S LIVIN ALRIGHT- Joe Fagin (45,730)
5- A ROCKIN GOOD WAY- Bonnie Tyler & Shakin Stevens (44,557)
6- BIRD OF PARADISE- Snowy White (32,215)
7- MARGUERITA TIME- Status Quo (26,775)
8- TELL HER ABOUT IT- Billy Joel (25,500)
9- RUNNING WITH THE NIGHT- Lionel Richie (20,468)
10- ISLANDS IN THE STREAM- Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers (18,411)

Paul moving further ahead this week makes me feel less aggrieved about Howard Jones not making it last time around, Pipes of Peace was clearly the more popular of the two at the time. Still hate it obvs but it doesn’t feel like the non number one that its sales total from last week implied

I’m curious to see the sales of Relax over the next few weeks. I think I’d always assumed it was a really high seller during its time at #1 but so far it hasn’t quite grown as exponentially as I’d have assumed from the stories I’d heard about its popularity

Billy Joel - Tell Her About It held up well in the top 10 and is his best song in my opinion. It's very 60s Motown nostalgic in style, a route Wham will go down for one of their biggest hits in 1984 too.
