It's all about the 80's this week as Department S finally get their 42-year-old Indie classic onto the top spot, having gone top 10 first time round, despite failing to go top 20 in the UK. The late Vaughan Toulouse and friends created an influential gem with Is Vic There. Johnny Marr will definitely have been watching and taking notice. It's quite the week for 80's acts returning, Duran Duran grab a second track off their new album at 73 - Black Moonlight - as do Tears For Fears off theirs, with Rivers Of Mercy at 72. OMD are back after a break of 4 years with Slow Train at 74, re-using the Sailing On The Seven Seas rhythm and not much else. That's a 43-year span of hits, including 3 number ones in the 80's, 3 in the 90's, 1 in the 10's, and a revived 80's classic also in the 10's. Bizarrely, they were inactive in the 00's, too much Atomic Kitten going on.

The 70's are also in vogue as The Babys 1978 chart-topper returns, Isn't It Time was a goodie that never became a big UK hit, while top new track is a cover of 4-Non Blondes 1992 hit What's Up, featuring Linda Perry (singer & writer) but it's mainly Dolly Parton doing one of her best vocal performances in recent years, and that'll be 47-years-worth of charting since Jolene. But that's nothing. 60's veterans The Rolling Stones are back for the first time in 3 years and they are Angry, not sure why as they now have the longest chart-span with new material of any act, at 54 years since Honky Tonk Women went top 5. They've only ever topped my chart with oldies (Satisfaction and Paint It, Black) so blatantly obviously they would have been charting for me even longer than Micky Dolenz at 58 years, had I started a few years earlier.

Kylie meanwhile gets a first track off the new album sneaking in at 68, the 4th track to chart, and Tension shoots up to 24. That leaves a surprise drop from Take That, Windows at 67. It's happily nothing to do with Microsoft, or as they should be called MicroCloud Stitch-up to get anything to work without flashing a debit card. That means 31 years of charting for Gazza, Howard & Mark, including 3 number ones.
