#40. Olivia Rodrigo ~ Get Him Back! [31 points]
Most hated: Dobbo [+11]
UK peak: #7

#39. Ed Sheeran ~ Eyes Closed [44 points]
Most hated: detonate [+13]
UK peak: #1

#38. Chris Brown ~ Sensational (feat. Davido and Lojay) [45 points]
Most hated: ~1^∞ [+12]
UK peak: #45

#37. Chris Brown ~ Nightmares (feat. Byron Messia) [46 points]
Most hated: ~1^∞ [+13]
UK peak: #73

#36. Lewis Capaldi ~ Wish You the Best [51 points]
Most hated: seven [+12]
UK peak: #1

Starting out the top 40 we have Olivia Rodrigo who had a very good year with her avoiding the sophomore slump with "Guts" album getting a much-loved on Buzzjack #1 single "Vampire" and top 3 follow-up hit "Bad Idea Right". The album launch single "Get Him Back!" however had a few more detractors and granted it was the most annoying of the lot. Her fans will be happy to see she's last in the poll though anyhow and she has since followed this up with a much better song for the Hunger Games soundtrack.

Two #1 singles in this section now by two guys Buzzjack love to hate, and sure many of us did have a good moan about "Eyes Closed" and "Wish You The Best" going to #1 but ultimately they aren't terrible songs so it makes a good deal of sense they only manage to land in the bottom five of the hate chart here, both artists have done worse. Lewis has one song to come whilst the rest of Ed's output this year wasn't relevant enough for enough people to warrant nominating it in (although "American Cheese" as I like to call it ought to have been here).

Meanwhile we have two Chris Brown songs here which I presume got nominated in moreso due to his "name power" than for the songs themselves which are both quite forgettable but ultimately not very offensive. He had three hits in the year so, one more to come from him, though none as big as last year's "Under the Influence" thankfully.

'get him back!' and 'Wish You The Best' are both good tracks so pleased to see them being spared early. Gwan Ed largely avoiding the hate for once too tongue.gif (I would have thrown a point or so to 'American Town' if it was on here instead but 'Eyes Closed' is inoffensive).

Not sure if the people who nominated these Chris Brown tracks had all even heard them or if they were just 'fuck Chris Brown' nominations (I mean, fair x), 'Sensational' is the only one I've listened to so far while I am still behind on the top 100 polls but that one is pretty cringe. I did like 'Talibans' though so hoping 'Nightmares' might be a bit better...

Also would have voted for 'bad idea right?' if it was here but I know that's an unpopular opinion x

bad idea right was definitely far worse than get him back and would have probably got my 18 if it made the cut.

Happy that Olivia and Lewis are out, I really like both songs! Haven’t heard the Chris brown ones and Ed’s one was very mid but not awful

Baddadan seems to be the Marmite song of the year so expect it will tend to do quite well in both best of and worst of polls, though like to think it won’t get too much further in this list of rubbish.

Get Him Back is a good track and everything else that’s dropped out is inoffensive - I did vote for Eyes Closed but more because I was annoyed at how much it was Ed repeating what he’s done before rather than because it’s that bad in itself.

Jax Jones' chart relevance seems to be on a bit of a life support but for now he's still just about able to score hits and he got a reasonably sized one this year with 'Whistle', which also brought former Hatechart winner Calum Scott back, having featured on another big dance hit "Where Are You Now" which Buzzjack liked a bit more. The song makes the odd request to the listener to put your hand on your heart and whistle, then accompanied by a hook that just about errs on the side of annoyingly catchy.

Some more dance hits fall with them taking up most of the section: the biggest dance hit of the moment is undeniably "Prada", the re-working of D-Block Europe's hit "Ferrari Horses" that many here felt a bit unnecessary which acted as the breakthrough hit for bedroom producer Cassö. It leads the current trend in dance music of slapping a lite techno beat over a sample and was just even bigger of a hit in the world's techno capital Germany.

Joseph's nemesis of the year Flowdan features here twice next to each other now - firstly on 'Rumble' which served as the comeback of Skrillex although sold mostly off the back of Fred Again's involvement after his meteoric rise into one of dance music's biggest names the previous year. Chase & Status' biggest hit of the year and the second in an impressive comeback streak for them, 'Baddadan' had a lot of love here but also came with its fair share of detractors who push it to the edge of bottom ten. Meanwhile Doja Cat had an eventful year resulting in getting her first #1 single only very shortly after a bit of internet controversy - 'Paint the Town Red' got a bit of pushback though for its very blatant sample of classic 60s hit 'Walk On By'.

Teaming up for the Barbie movie Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice were chosen to give Aqua's "Barbie Girl" a modernisation to fit in with the soundtrack, it wasn't the worst offender from the film according to your votes but came fairly close. There's only so much of the original song I can stomach for being annoyingly catchy anyway but this version takes out a lot of what made that song fun in the first place so I and others felt it was a bit of a downgrade. Chris Brown is here again as we've seemingly decided this track of his is slightly worse than his other two, to be fair it was the only one of his I voted for as he's at his most whiny again and there's no featured act here to save us from a whole song (or two songs in one) of his vocals. One of his collaborators Byron Messia is here too with his one solo hit which raised a few eyebrows from the various gang violence references in the lyrics (and comparing his gang to a notorious terrorist group).

Arguably the biggest name in music in the US at the moment is Morgan Wallen who has had two huge albums in the current decade so far. Thankfully the UK aren't so big on country music but a crossover hit was bound to happen eventually with 'Last Night' serving as it - the song was of course #1 for ages in the US but settled for a 2-month top 40 run here. With a fair few here finding this style of country-pop annoying and his personality not helping either it was bound to make the hate chart although I didn't think the song was quite that bad really, he's certainly had more annoying songs that were big American hits. Tying for points is British-Australian house producer Sonny Fodera who finally managed a hit single after being prominent in the scene for a while. For me this was very pleasing to see but I seem to be in a minority of big supporters as many found the song annoying. At least it's not quite considered one of the top 5 worst dance hits of the year here I guess.

Asking & Baddadan are in my top 3 chart hits of the year along with Cha Cha Cha. Glad they don't feature high in this chart (not that they should have been here at all of course). Actually Until I Found You is probably higher but that's technically a 2022 song.

There were so many awful country songs this year yet the only one I liked was Last Night.

Pleasantly surprised that 'Baddadan' and 'Rumble' are both bottom 10, both among the best hits of the year for me but expected them to have more haters here! Boo at them still being higher than 'Parda' though x

'Talibans' and 'Barbie World' are both bangers too, and I also like 'Paint The Town Red' although it was not near the best on Doja's album.

2 more of my votes out in the 26-30 section although 'Last Night' only barely made it in, so might well be kicked out by Chris Brown or David Guetta for me if I'd listened to them, it's pretty obnoxious as the baseline of being a Morgan Wallen song but it's not the absolute worst, it's one of his better songs that I've heard. Luke Combs' 'The Kind Of Love We Make' was the worst of the country hits of the year for me so a bit of an omission from this list but I trust that's more because people were lucky enough to not know it tongue.gif 'Asking' just got more and more annoying each time I heard it, hope Clementine will get a hit with a more listenable vocal some time lol.

I’m sure the artists on Asking can do much better but yeah it’s really horrid to listen to for me. Otherwise I’m pretty happy with what’s dropped out - mostly stuff I quite like or don’t particularly dislike.

You may like this one more - it's one of my favourite house records of the 2010s and what got me into Sonny Fodera in the first place - ought to have been his breakthrough hit really (also a better showcase of Alex Mills' vocal talent than the song she features on in this year's Hatechart)

Whistle I find incredibly irritating now, after not minding ig too much at first. Paint the town red is a bop, and prada is alright. I am not in the hate camp but I don’t live it either. Don’t like either rumble or badadan, but the latter is the better of the two

Barbie world is a tune! Not a fan of either the Chris brown song or talibans. Asking is so so sooooo annoying, and last night was very meh. As Dan said tho, he’s done worse so luckily this was the one to be his hit

The fact that some of these atrocities (e.g. Whistle, Barbie World, Paint The Town Red!!) have fared better than instant classic I'm Just Ken makes me despair for Buzzjack 🤣

You may be forgiven for thinking Doja Cat's most hated hit of the year would be the one that got by far the most attention (not 'Attention') however we have a case here of 'song that actually flopped because it was bad'. Although only meant as a promotional release 'Demons' was enough of a WTF moment to get a fair few detractors here and it didn't do wonders for her album rollout with the album not doing much on streaming besides its two pop-friendly tracks. Although speaking of WTF moments Sam Smith & Madonna were not to be outdone there with their joint effort 'Vulgar', which amusingly peaked at #69 although the song would be more of a turn-off in the bedroom for most of us. Both performers did manage to guest on reasonably sized hits in the year which were thankfully a lot better.

If you love (or hate) dance music entirely reliant on sample usage then try listening to the next three in a row. Taking one of Buzzjack's favourite songs ever in Robert Miles' "Children" and making it a vocal slap house adjacent track was always going to be a controversial move and many weren't here for it but it alas got Switch Disco a breakthrough hit and kept Ella Henderson's chart career going another year. I quite enjoyed it myself but the criticism is fair enough. The world's #1 DJ and King of cheesy sampling David Guetta up next with his latest song taking heavy inspiration from another dance classic Scooter's 'The Logical Song' (originally by Supertramp of course). It entered fairly well but then just lost all momentum and I doubt it'll be back come the new year, it's no loss anyhow. We'll be seeing more from him later on and there's another appearance from its guest vocalist Kim Petras too. Just outside of the top 20 we have a dancified cover version of Whitney Houston's 'Million Dollar Bill' which was the last big hit of her lifetime, it threatened to become a hit having slowly risen up the chart but ended up stalling out fairly lowly. No one really despised this but it got a fair amount of middling scores and I can't really moan too much about it as it's a fairly pointless re-tread.
