From The OCC

QUOTE
After initially finding fame as lead vocalist in indie outfit Theaudience back in 1996, Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s enjoyed a glittering career that’s seen her triumph in an infamous chart battle against Victoria Beckham, tour the world and invite us all into her iamspamspamamifor a disco.

Now, Sophie enters 2024 experiencing quite the renaissance. With her 2001 hit Murder on the Dancefloor featuring in new Emerald Fennell-directed film Saltburn, the Houndslow-born singer-songwriter’s recruiting a whole new generation of fans.

After originally reaching Number 2 on its release, Murder on the Dancefloor soundtracks Fennell’s new movie starring (a very naked) Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi and Rosamund Pike; with the track proving so popular it’s set to re-enter the Official Singles Chart Top 40 for the first time in 22 years.
Read more on Murder on the Dancefloor's chart resurgence thanks to that iconic Saltburn scene here.

So, we thought it was about time we revealed Sophie’s Official biggest songs in the UK to date. Whether you’ve been a fan since Spiller’s Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love) or you’ve discovered her though Saltburn, allow us to present Sophie's Official Top 20 biggest songs in the UK to date.

First, let's take a closer look at the Top 3.

3. Take Me Home
Released: 2001
Official Singles Chart peak: 2
Total UK chart units: 277,000

The first track lifted from her Read My Lips album, Take Me Home saw Sophie rework Cher's 1979 song of the same name. Borrowing the original track's melody, Sophie rewrote the lyrics for her debut solo single, which peaked at Number 2 in the UK in 2001 and remained in the Top 40 for 29 weeks.

To date, Take Me Home has racked up 3.35 million combined audio and video streams in the UK.

2. Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)
Released: 2000
Official Singles Chart peak: 1
Total UK chart units: 760,000

Sophie's first single outside of Theaudience saw her provide (at the time uncredited) vocals on Spiller's 2000 dance smash Groovejet (If This Ain't Love).

The single was famously pitted against Out of Your Mind by UK garage duo True Steppers, Another Level alumni Dane Bowers and Victoria Beckham in one of the UK's most memorable chart battles ever. Despite this being Victoria's much-hyped first foray into solo music following her success with the Spice Girls, Spiller and Sophie came out on top, with Out of Your Mind settling for Number 2. Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) has gone on to shift 760,000 UK chart units since its release, including 12.8 million combined UK audio and video streams.

Out of Your Mind's total figure to date is 416,400, in case you're wondering.

1. Murder on the Dancefloor
Released: 2001
Official Singles Chart peak: 2
Total UK chart units: 1 million

Now expected to re-enter the Official Singles Chart Top 40 22 years after its release, Murder on the Dancefloor is officially Sophie's biggest song to date in the UK.

The second single lifted from Read My Lips, Murder on the Dancefloor peaked at Number 2 in the UK in December 2001; going on to spend a total of 13 weeks in the Top 40 so far.

The track has accumulated a total of 1 million UK chart units since its release, and is by far Sophie's most-streamed single of all time. To date, Murder on the Dancefloor has earned 71 million combined audio and video streams in the UK.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor Official Top 20 biggest songs on the Official Chart:

1. Murder On The Dancefloor

I love that Heartbreak is at #4. Something I've barely heard since its release outside of my own plays of it, glad it's continued to do well

I thought Groovejet and Me and My Imagination would be higher. But I think Groovejet isn't on Spotify so that's probably hurt its sales a lot.

And I'm surprised how high Crying At the Discotheque is. It's a new song and also a cover, I wouldn't have thought it'd be so high.

277k for #3 does seem low but I guess that sort of pattern is quite common for pre streaming age artists. Correct Top 2 but Heartbreak Make Me A Dancer and Get Over You are very much bops.

I wonder if Murder On The Dancefloor would have been even bigger first time round if that had been the lead instead of the rather limp Take Me Home.

Groovejet wasn't on Spotify for a long time so that must still be hurting it somewhat, it only got put on streaming 3 years ago.

It's got about 18m streams now which is still better than quite a few other #1s of the time though, plus another 18m for the Purple Disco Machine remix and a couple extra millions for other versions

Also seems clear to me the OCC haven't actually looked at all of Sophie's features to make this list up as two of her top 5 on Spotify are absent; Can't Fight This Feeling (with Junior Caldera) and Not Giving Up On Love (with Armin van Buuren)

That's a great Top 3!

I had no idea in recent times that Murder on the Dancefloor was getting close to being a million seller (or "millionaire") - wow!

It sold 181,500 copies in 2001 and a further 115,000 in 2002, so its total at the end of 2002 was 296,500.

It finally reached 400,000 in February 2017, then 600,000 in August 2020. Since then it's done another 400,000 in just under 3 and a half years. As pointed out already, it shouldn't take too long to reach 2xPlatinum thanks to its surge!

Less than 50,000 added to Take Me Home's total since 2001 (it ended the year on 228,540 sales).

'Murder on the Dancefloor' and 'Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)' is such a brilliant top 2 wub.gif

Elsewhere in her top 5 - 'Move This Mountain' from the relevant double A-Side completely passed me by for years until I gave the album a listen, love the trip-hop sound there!

No surprise at that top 2 being miles ahead, I expect they'd be the only 2 songs a lot of people know from her! (Both great so no complaints, I'd have liked to see 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)' in 3rd though).

'A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed' being included on the list *.* Inbetweeners banger

She deserves the world.

I had no idea 'Murder' had arrived at 1million already though. ohmy.gif That really has done exceptionally well in the streaming age, I remember it was on like 350k before then!

Can I just say that I also really like Take Me Home? It’s a good cover and it feels like it’s being a bit left out here.
