Tunstall single tops Ivor awards

KT Tunstall was also a winner at the Brit Awards
Singer-songwriter KT Tunstall has won the prestigious best song at the Ivor Novello Awards for her 2005 hit Suddenly I See.
James Blunt picked up two awards for most performed song and international hit of the year for You're Beautiful.

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett of Gorillaz were named Songwriters of the Year at the awards ceremony in London.

Kaiser Chiefs' Employment won best album. The Ivors honour UK songwriters, composers and music publishers.

KT Tunstall said her win was an inspiration.

New Order won the award for outstanding song collection

"I've been writing songs for 15 years and it's amazing to just sit in your room and do something that you like doing and it turns into this. It gives you a kick up the arse to carry on," said Tunstall.

James Blunt joked to journalists about his song winning the most performed work award.

"I'm going to be rude about this before anyone else has the chance - thank you so much for the award for most overplayed song."

Kaiser Chiefs' Ricky Wilson attended the awards on crutches after being hit by a car earlier this week.

Tunstall, Blunt, Gorillaz and the Kaiser Chiefs all won awards at the Brit Awards earlier this year.

Career achievement

Coldplay missed out on an Ivor after being nominated for three awards - their single Fix You was up for best song, with Speed of Sound included in the international hit of the year category.

Best contemporary song went to Athlete for Wires.

Swedish film Evil beat off competition from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe to win best original film score - composed by Francis Shaw.

Channel 4's Elizabeth I picked up best television soundtrack.

The Bee Gees, Ray Davies, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull and Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff all picked up career achievement honours.

Criticism

New Order won the best outstanding song collection award, while That's My Goal, written by Jorgen Elofsson, Jeremy Godfrey and Bill Padley for X-Factor winner Shayne Ward, won best-selling UK single.

The classical music award went to composer Sir Harrison Birtwistle, who took the opportunity to have a swipe at modern music.

"Why is your music so loud? You must all be brain-dead. This isn't me against pop music, I didn't know so many cliches existed as I've heard in the last half-hour," he said at the ceremony.

Birtwhistle's works include operas The Mask of Orpheus and The Last Supper.

James's blunt message to music fans

James Blunt sent a defiant message to critics who hate his songs when he accepted his double win at the Ivor Novello Awards.

He delivered the remarks as he picked up awards for You're Beautiful, which was named International Hit of the Year and Most Performed Work.

As the singer accepted his award, he said: "To all those b****** who don't like my music - you're all adults, you can switch your radio off," he said.

Asked if he ever got sick of hearing You're Beautiful, he replied: "I don't have to listen to it, I'm the one who sings it. And it's continued to get me laid."

Accepting the award for Most Performed Work, he told the audience: "I should probably be rude about it before anyone else is, so thank you very much for the Most Overplayed Song award."

Blunt was in no mood to talk about his fling with Tara Palmer Tomkinson.

"I really don't enjoy the notion of celebrity gossip," he said.

Blunt's music has some celebrity supporters. Bee Gee Barry Gibb said: "We like James Blunt. He sounds like us."

KT Tunstall was delighted to win her first Ivor - known as the "intellectual" music awards because they honour song-writing talent.

"This means the world," she said.

"This is the 'brainy' award. My physicist father and my teacher mother will be very pleased that the word intellectual has been mentioned."

She added: "I started writing songs when I was 15. It's amazing that you're sitting in your room doing something you like doing and suddenly it turns into all this."

Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson arrived at the awards on crutches.

Wilson was hit by a car while crossing the road in Leeds city centre on Sunday.

But he escaped serious injury after deploying his "trademark jump" to flip over the bonnet.

Ray Davies was there to pick up his award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.

He said: "I couldn't accept this award without mentioning my band the Kinks because they are so important in my life.

"Without them I wouldn't be here today. They are fabulous guys."

Might aswell be another award's ceremony dedicated to the most overhyped artists of the past year.

I strongly think that KT's 'Suddenly I See' is vastly overrated, although I like some of her other songs a lot.

Suddenly I see certainly is'nt her best song. It is a bit pop for my taste to be honest. Other songs off her great album are FAR superior.
