"English pop singer, songwriter and the original Pop Idol winner Will Young is back with a brand new tune called ‘Love Revolution’, and we have nothing but love for it.

This new song has been confirmed as the first taste of his upcoming much-awaited sixth full-length studio album entitled 85% Proof, which is slated for liberation to online digital stores on May 25 2015 courtesy of Island Records. It’s a follow-up to Young’s fifth studio effort ‘Echoes’ released in 2011 through 19 Recordings in collaboration with RCA Records and Sony Music and which was responsible for the lead single ‘Jealousy‘, his highest chart topping song yet.

The new tune received its first spin on Chris Evans’ BBC Radio 2 morning show on March 27th 2015. If it sounds familiar, it is, as it samples Tomcraft’s 2002 disco banger ‘Loneliness‘.

‘Love Revolution‘ was penned by a sea of music writers including Will Young (duh!), Jim Eliot, Jemima Stillwell, Andrea Monica Martin, Edmund Louis Clement, Ivan Matias and Robert Borrmann. Once again, the 36 year old singer songwriter proves he’s at the top of his game, as he’s continiously portraying a versatile taste in different pop genres, profiling himself one of Britain’s finest and most versatile pop artists, Young’s retro-soul sounding new single, ‘Love Generation’ was officially presented in Chris Evans Radio 2 show earlier today and made available to stream on Spotify or purchase on Itunes immediately after.

By treating a Sample of the 2003 dance anthem ‘Loneliness’ by Tomkraft and twisting it into a retro-soul production, Will’s proving once again he’s come a very long way since he won Pop Idol back in 2002. Lead that Love Generation, Will.

He's not young Will any more, but the singer's youthful exuberance comes blasting out of his new single. This track, the first from his forthcoming album 85% Proof, is crammed with funk soul. Will brings his ever-impressive vocals to bear, lifting a hook link fro Tomcraft's 2003 No 1 Loneliness. If the rest of the album is as good as this, we're in for an absolute cracker. ****

Will Young winning the first Pop Idol instalment back in 2002 seems like a bizarre memory. It is hard to remember him emerging into the music industry under the wing of Simon Cowell because he has proven himself better than those means and shaken free of the stigma sometimes associated with the X Factor like shows. The second Pop Idol instalment with Michelle McManus is thankfully much more forgettable. Or regrettable, you can delete accordingly.

As an artist Young has mastered the art of producing a catchy yet vulnerable pop sound, maturing delicately with every new song. His last release Echoes back in 2011 promoted his growth as a talented singer songwriter with the likes of the breathtaking Come On and the underlining dance tones of I Just Want A Lover - the video for which saw him dancing around a supermarket car park partnered with a shopping trolley, unique to say the least. This intriguing music video history sets him aside from other mainstream pop acts around today. We have seen him moving from Blue Peter spoofs to taking part in dog training competitions, whilst causing a scene at an art gallery or making us cry in an emotional courtroom scene. Not forgetting about his portrayal as a pregnant man, of course. It all claps together in applause to his artistry.

Enter Love Revolution, the new single and first release from his upcoming album 85% Proof (scheduled for release May 2015). It throws us a funkier sound that we haven’t seen from him in a while, slightly nodding back to the soulful elements of his 2005 album Keep On. If you think the song sounds familiar then you’d be right, as it is a reworking of the 2002 dance anthem Loneliness bought to us by German DJ Tomcraft. Much less Euro-Dance though, I’m afraid, but much more summer soul that will get you dancing around your garden in no time at all.

The video depicts him as a preaching salesman trying to shift his Love Revolution products onto the apparent lonely singletons. It, albeit cheesy, is an entertaining clip that continues to set him aside from the generic pop routines around at the moment – and who here doesn’t enjoy a bit of cheese every now and then? If you said, ‘I don’t,’ then I have nothing more to say to you.

A lot of the best records are made by strait-laced artists cutting loose. While it’s not a pop curveball on a par with Cat Stevens’s Was Dog A Doughnut, the energy of Love Revolution is irrepressible. Fuzzy bass, bright guitars, talkback vocals and handclap dropouts give off a vibe of a guy who actually wants to make pop that’s fun. It makes me think of Larry Hagman in I Dream Of Jeannie having a blast in spite of himself. And the video is like a Technicolor episode of Mad Men. Neat.
