Wale gets his second #1 album with 'The Album About Nothing', leading with 100,000 units and 88,000 proper sales. His previous #1 was 'The Gifted' in July 2013, which sold 158,000 in its first week.

Madonna is #57 in her fourth week, and Marina is #181 in her third week.

Wale Rules With Second No. 1 Album, 'Furious 7' Soundtrack Drives to No. 2

As forecast, rapper Wale debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with his Seinfeld-inspired The Album About Nothing. It’s his second chart-topper, following his previous effort, 2013’s The Gifted.

With the No. 1 arrival, Wale beats out the surging Furious 7 soundtrack, which drives 17-2 and is the greatest gainer on the chart.

The Album About Nothing was released on March 31 through EBM Music/Maybach/Atlantic Records, and tallied 100,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 5 (according to Nielsen Music). The Furious 7 album (on Universal Studios/Atlantic) shifted 74,000 (a gain of 202 percent).

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

With both The Album About Nothing and Furious 7 at Nos. 1 and 2, Atlantic Records owns the top two slots for the first time since the July 19, 2014-dated chart. That week, Trey Songz’ Trigga (on Songbook/Atlantic) debuted at No. 1, while Ed Sheeran’s x (Atlantic) fell 1-2 in its second week.

Furious 7’s 15-position rise is the largest jump into the top two on the chart since the Les Miserables soundtrack zoomed 31 rungs (from No. 33 to No. 2) on the Jan. 12, 2013 chart.

The Les Miserables soundtrack debuted at No. 33 from only three full days of sales, as it was released on an off-cycle Friday (Dec. 21, 2012), four days before its parent film premiered in theaters. Then, once the album had a full week of sales (in the week ending Dec. 30, concurrent with the movie’s debut), the set flew to No. 2. Furious 7 is in its third week on the chart, but like Les Miserables, its swift chart climb on the current tally is owed to the film’s theatrical bow (on April 3).

Furious 7 is up 388 percent in traditional album sales (33,000 for the week), up 154 percent in track equivalent album units (38,000) and up 3 percent in streaming equivalent album units (3,000). Much of the soundtrack’s gain is owed to the performance of its multiple hit songs, especially Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again.” It sold 168,000 downloads for the week (up 488 percent) and its video serves as a tribute to the film’s co-star Paul Walker, who died during filming of Furious 7.

Furious 7 just beats out the new album by one of Furious 7’s other co-stars, Ludacris. The hip-hop artist sees his new album Ludaversal bow at No. 3 with 73,000 units. It is his eighth top 10 album, and first full-length release since 2010’s Battle of the Sexes, which debuted at No. 1 with 137,000 units of pure album sales its first week.

Last week’s No. 1, Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, falls to No. 4 in its third week with 65,000 units (down 47 percent).

Taylor Swift’s 1989 spends a 23rd consecutive week locked in the top five (its entire chart run), as it holds steady at No. 5 with just over 59,000 units. Only 10 albums have spent their first 23 weeks on the chart in the top five. The last to do so was Adele’s 21, which logged its first 39 weeks in the region back in 2011.

Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour dips 4-6 with 59,000 units (up 12 percent). It is the 35th nonconsecutive week in the top 10 for the album.

Darius Rucker debuts at No. 7 with Southern Style (57,000), clocking his fourth top 10 solo set. His last studio album, True Believers, debuted and peaked at No. 2. Southern Style also opens at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart, securing Rucker his fourth chart-topper on that list. He previously led the country tally with True Believers; Charleston, SC 1966 (in 2010) and Learn To Live (2008).

Rock act Death Cab For Cutie also stars in the top 10 with its new album Kintsugi. The Barsuk/Atlantic set enters at No. 8 with 56,000 units. It’s the fourth top 10 effort for the group, which was last in the top 10 with its previous studio effort, 2011’s Codes and Keys (No. 3 debut and peak). It’s also the third top 10 for Atlantic Records on the latest chart.

The soundtrack to Fifty Shades of Grey slides 3-9 in its eighth week on the tally, moving 54,000 units.

Rounding out the top 10 is the second top 10 album for singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens, who debuts at No. 10 with Carrie & Lowell (53,000 units). Stevens was last in the top 10 with his previous studio release, 2010’s The Age of Adz, which debuted and peaked at No. 7. Stevens’ new album also debuts at No. 1 on Vinyl Albums, Tastemakers and Internet Albums charts.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Ed Sheeran Scores His Second Million-Selling Album
By Keith Caulfield | April 10, 2015 9:49 PM EDT

Also: One Direction’s “Take Me Home” crosses the 2 million sales mark, Van Halen’s second live album debuts & Taylor Swift’s top five reign continues.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the chart:

— Taylor Swift, 1989 - No. 5 — The album has now spent its first 23 weeks in the top five of the chart. It is only the 10th set to achieve the feat since Billboard combined the tally's mono and stereo listings in 1963.

— Van Halen, Tokyo Dome Live In Concert – No. 20 — Van Halen debuts at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 with its new live album, Tokyo Dome Live In Concert. Remarkably, if the album -- its 16th chart entry -- goes no higher than No. 20, it will mark the lowest-charting effort for the band in its 37-year career on the tally. Tokyo Dome starts with 31,000 equivalent album units, nearly all from pure album sales. The set was promoted by a two-night performance on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live on March 30 and 31, and an April 2 visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The gigs were touted as the band’s first U.S. TV performances with singer David Lee Roth. Previous to this week, the only Van Halen title to miss the top 10 was their self-titled debut, which peaked at No. 19 on May 20, 1978 (after debuting at No. 149 on March 11).

The new set is the group’s second live album to chart, following Live: Right Here, Right Now, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 in 1993. That album featured Sammy Hagar on vocals, while the new release boasts Roth, who fronted the band from 1974-1985, later returning in 2006.

— The Maine, American Candy - No. 27 — With 14,000 copies sold, the band clocks its biggest sales week since 2010, when Black & White launched with 25,000 sold (at No. 16). The new set is also the group’s highest charting release since Black & White.

— One Direction, Four - No. 41 — Four, the group’s fourth album, is only 46,000 copies away from becoming the group’s fourth million-seller. Further, their second release, Take Me Home, surpassed 2 million in sales during the week ending March 29. It’s now one of two albums for the vocal group that have sold 2 million copies. It joins their debut set, Up All Night, which has sold 2.04 million. (One Direction’s third album, Midnight Memories, has sold 1.49 million.)

— NF, Mansion – No. 62 — Rapper NF sees his first full-length album, Mansion, debut at No. 62 on the Billboard 200 and at No. 1 on Top Christian Albums. The album moves in with 9,000 copies sold in the week ending April 5, with its overall first-week equivalent album unit total just over 10,000. NF (real name Nate Feuerstein) signed with Capitol Christian Music Group in 2014 and made his first Billboard chart appearance as the featured act on Flame’s “Start Over” (No. 7 peak on the Gospel Digital Songs dated Oct. 19, 2013).

— Ed Sheeran, + – No. 71 — In the sales week ending March 29, Sheeran's debut album, +, reached a million in total album sales. It was released in 2012. Both of Sheeran's albums are in the million-sellers club, as his second effort, 2014's x, has so far sold 1.4 million.

— Ringo Starr, Postcards From Paradise – No. 99 — Ringo Starr return to the Billboard 200 chart, notching his 16th charting album with Postcards From Paradise’s debut at No. 99. The album bows with 7,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 5, according to Nielsen Music. Postcards comes nearly 45 years after he made his solo debut on the Billboard 200 with Sentimental Journey. That set started at No. 51 on the May 16, 1970-dated chart, on its way to a No. 22 peak the following month. Starr would visit the top 10 twice in his solo career, with 1973’s Ringo (peaking at No. 2 for two weeks behind Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road) and 1974’s Goodnight Vienna (No. 8). Starr is the only member of The Beatles without a solo No. 1 album. As for his fellow Beatles, Paul McCartney has seven leaders (counting both his solo efforts and those with Wings), John Lennon has three, and George Harrison has two.

Though Starr lacks a No. 1 album, he does own a pair of chart-topping singles on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Photograph” and “You’re Sixteen.”

— Selena, Lo Mejor de - No. 102 — It's the 15th charting album for the late legend and her highest-ranking since 1999, when All My Hits Todos Mis Exitos peaked at No. 54. The new album was released on the 20th anniversary of her death, March 31. For the week ending April 5, Selena’s overall album sales grew by 262 percent to 9,000 sold. Her digital song sales also climbed: gaining 167 percent to 26,000 sold.

Selena’s non-programmed U.S. streams were also unsurprisingly up for the week, rising by 133 percent to 7.2 million. Her most-streamed song of the week was “Dreaming Of You,” with 788,000.

I'd actually assumed One Direction had already passed the million mark with 'FOUR' but the fact that it'll undoubtedly get there and become their fourth of four to do so is still pretty impressive. Interesting that their last two albums have sold about 500k less than the one before (with 'Take Me Home' on 2m and 'Midnight Memories' on 1.49m). I'd imagine the next one will have strong opening sales as there'll probably be a lot of attention around it being their first as a four-piece which would mobilise their fanbase but, barring a smash hit, I'd say it'd be their most front-loaded yet and probably end their million selling streak.

Great to see Ed's '+' finally surpass the million mark. With 'x' at 1.4m and still in and around the top 10 thanks to 'Thinking Out Loud' going strong, I think it has the potential to get to two million in the long-run.

Queen of the Clouds has really stuck it out well since its early US release, would be interesting to see how much it's sold so far ;o

I can't actually believe Take Me Home has sold 2 million. I must be stupidly behind on my sales figured but the last I heard the first two 1D albums were more around 1.5-1.6 million sales. That could be as long as a year ago though ohmy.gif The trickle sales are real in any case.

FOUR selling a million already is surprising, its sales haven't fallen off from Midnight Memories as much as I expected really. But it does feel like something of a last hurrah, which is disappointing because it's obviously been such a "blah" album campaign in a variety of ways. They could have left a much better legacy than two good album campaigns and then a messy third and non-existent fourth.
