It's nearly that time of the year again where we welcome back the brilliant Top of the Pops, and the star-studded line-up for the two holiday specials has been revealed.

Music Week reports that hitmakers Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa and Rita Ora are just three of the top names on the billing, all three capable of stating that 2017 is one of, if not their best year yet. Ed Sheeran, of course, captured the fastest-selling album ever by a male solo artist with ÷, spawning 10 Top 10 singles from the record, one of which being the 14-week Number 1 Shape of You.

Dua Lipa became the first solo female in nearly two years to score a Number 1 hit on the Official Singles Chart with New Rules, which Rita Ora has scored three Top 10 hits this year, a feat she last managed in 2012.

Also announced for the two on-hour specials airing over the Christmas and New Year period are Craig David, James Arthur, The Script, Bastille, Paloma Faith and Clean Bandit, with the former and latter appearing for the second year running.

Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates will once again return to host. Cotton said: “Hosting the Christmas and New Year specials of the biggest pop party on TV alongside my mate Reggie is definitely one of my Christmas highlights and something I look forward to every year.”

The BBC's 'Top of the Pops successor' Sounds Like Friday Night is currently airing on BBC One, and the special guests for the final three episodes of the series were recently unveiled.

As a TOTP fanatic, it's always a real treat to see the show back on Christmas Day as if we're visiting an alternate reality where the show was never cancelled.

Long may the specials continue, even if the chances of it ever coming back full time seems to drift further away.

Isn't the second TOTP normally on New Year's Day?

Moving the Christmas Day programme is a bad move. It has been at 2.00 for as long as I can remember - and that is a long time.

Dare I say a gentle move towards quietly cancelling the show because "it doesn't get enough ratings"? It's been on borrowed time for ages.

I had a great time in the audience for it last year, but it was notable how they had to use camera angles and various tricks to make the audience look larger than it was, and having to keep rearranging everyone to put all the grey-haired middle aged people at the back and the few photogenic young people at the front...

It says it all that Christmas Day TOTP has been brought forward so that BBC1 can show Shaun the Sheep Movie in its usual timeslot. Plus sticking to Fearne and Reggie once again shows a lack of interest in the programme at the BBC. It would have made more sense to have brought on board two current presenters from Radio 1.

The second Top Of The Pops is on New Year's Eve at 3.35pm.

The second editions on so early I didn't even see it!!

Don't think they are trying to cancel totp at xmas I would say most things on xmas day automatically get high ratings and it's part of the xmas day furniture - don't get why they've moved it.

Overnight ratings for the Christmas Day edition:

2009 - 3.40m (27.6%) - 14:00
2010 - 4.00m (27.8%) - 14:00
2011 - 3.90m (28.1%) - 14:00
2012 - 3.88m (26.6%) - 14:00
2013 - 3.10m (24.2%) - 14:00
2014 - 3.01m (24.0%) - 14:00
2015 - 2.83m (23.1%) - 14:00
2016 - 1.92m (14.3%) - 13:50 (news at 14:50 before The Queen)

Big drop last year - it faced stronger competition last year than usual though - Harry Potter

This is going to give Ed another boost for Perfect, if he gets to perform on both shows, the Xmas show he probably perform Shape of You and Perfect on the New Years Eve show, he is going to do a Clean Bandit ain't he on us as Clean Bandit performed on both shows last year, performing with Anne Marie and Louisa Johnson on separate occasions. So Perfect will probably run for at least 7 to 8 weeks at #1. drama.gif sleep.gif

I reckon Perfect will burn out relatively quickly because it's already been out for almost a year

I think Sounds Like Christmas could eventually replace TOTP Christmas with an additional factor that the target audience is starting to be too young to remember when TOTP was a weekly show.

Yeh has similarities with 2001 Christmas chart race with Robbie & Nicole for some reason - came off the back of a huge album and Robbie was at the height of his powers the like Ed bow!

Now that you mention this, I'm kind of surprised they didn't try this out this year! BBC may as well try and strengthen the brand of "Sounds Like..." rather than cling onto the past of Top of the Pops (even if it is a Christmas tradition).

Looking forward to the Dua Lipa, Rita Ora, Paloma Faith & Clean Bandit performances! I wish Little Mix would appear on it, they haven't done so since Move in 2013!

Maybe best wait until Sounds like is a bit more established perhaps?

I really don't think Sounds Like Friday Night will be recommissioned, based on how badly it is rating.

Anyway those who want Reggie gone got their wish

Wow at Reggie - how long has he been on it now? Wonder if anyone will host alongside Fearne now?
