It's the last chart of the year folks! And despite a close fight for it from Seeb and Bastille and also Laura Brehm and Draper, the last #1 of the year goes to...once again Nicki Minaj with Good Form. An odd Christmassy choice, but it had such a lead over the others this week nothing could touch it. And, I guess, cookies, Christmas... ish. Closing out the year, 2018 had a record 38 #1s with many tracks only holding the top spot for one week. With her second week here, Nicki also moves up to become the artist with the most weeks at #1 of the year, with four weeks across three chart toppers; as well as the aforementioned Good Form, lead single Chun-Li and AT Majesty led my 40 for one week apiece. POOLCLVB, Røse, Elohim and Ariana Grande each tallied three weeks at #1 within the year, before this week, the year's leader would have been a five-way tie. (Minaj a cinq?)
Despite what felt like a lot of playing xmas music this last week, few managed to enter in as the number of plays to get into the top 40 has moved much higher since I've become able to play music at work again. Our Xmas debuts and gainers this week go to Dalton's The Power of Love, which rises, Sia's My Old Santa Claus, Gabrielle Aplin's December and, arguably, Nina Nesbitt's Colder. Ariana's No Tears also returns this week thanks to an end of year surge-boost. Those that missed out this year include old faves Rockin Around the Christmas Tree and Mary's Boy Child, Driving Home for Christmas, One More Sleep and Underneath the Tree, and Gaga's own Christmas Tree, ever a guilty pleasure. I've not decided whether I'll let them chart in 2019 - it seems a little out of place, maybe! Other new entries this week from actual music genres come from M0, the highest, straight into the top ten, Kimbra, Halsey, Moods, Brooke Candy, Swimming Girls, Tritonal, BUNT, Jess Glynne, Young & Slick, Betty Who, Tom Odell and Cash Cash.
