Looking forward to this. I'm sure this list will be full of songs that I really should've listened to this year, but haven't, so expecting to find a few great gems on here.

It was great to have Disclosure back this year (with Fatoumata Diawara on “Ultimatum” at No72) - but the track I've linked to is “Power” by Rapsody and one of two hits in this set from Kendrick Lamar at 73 which surged to #3 in the post-Christmas lull at the start of 2018 and became a long-running hit for me.

“1992” and “1999” both made the Top 40 in the same week - but it is the former that by FAR went on to be the bigger hit for little-known producer No_4mat. It has spent 5 weeks in the Top 5 despite peaking no higher than #4 and continues to ride high after 13 weeks on the chart into 2019 and beyond. My other BJSC entry “Damson” by LPLX just misses out on the Top 20, but spent an impressive 17 weeks on the chart.

Swedish group Goat scored a massive #1 in July with “Let It Burn” - coincidentally this peaked around the time that the scorching summer did across Europe with wild fires in the Arctic Circle - but the song was initially commissioned for a Christmas documentary, Killing Gävle, which discusses the plight of the massive goat effigy that adorns Gävle in Northern Sweden at Christmas, and is ritually burnt down almost every Christmas.

#010 Ravyn Lenae “Sticky” Debut: 14th January 2018 / CR: 36-22-15-10-08-06-04-02-02-02-04-08-13-20-27-34-44 (17 weeks)

Taken from the Crush EP, “Sticky” is a retro-sounding slice of smooth and contemporary R&B from 19 year-old Chicago singer/songwriter Ravyn Lenae, who sounds like she is channeling Kate Bush here. It spent 3 weeks at number 2 but sadly could progress no further. However it does out-perform many of the year's number 1 hits to make the Top 10!

#009 IDLES “Danny Nedelko” Debut: 22nd July 2018 / CR: 50-30-18-11-06-03-01-01-01-03-05-06-09-17-25-32-40-50 (18 weeks)

The first track that I heard by IDLES was the punk-infused “Danny Nedelko” - a blistering call-to-arms and criticism of the recent increase in hostility to immigration in Europe and the UK especially. It documents the story of Ukrainian immigrant, Danny Nedelko, who is a close friend of the members of the band and is a celebration of multiculturalism and diversity. Nothing could have summed up the positivity that we desperately need than this song, and it duly spent 3 weeks atop my chart in September!

#008 Janelle Monáe “Make Me Feel” Debut: 25th February 2018 / CR: 33-20-09-03-02-01-01-02-03-05-07-11-17-23-30-39-49 (17 weeks)

Janelle Monáe scored her first #1 single on my chart in 2018 after many, many Top 10 hits with the funk and groove saturated “Make Me Feel” which was easily one of the best pop singles of the year, channelling a bit of Prince in the process - but yet despite being what I thought should have been a massive commercial hit, “Make Me Feel” could only come in at number 74 on the UK singles chart!? Seriously!?? : (

#007 Let's Eat Grandma “Falling Into Me” Debut: 1st April 2018 / CR: 39-23-12-07-03-01-01-01-02-03-05-08-15-23-31-38-44-49 (18 weeks)

There's a huge amount to love about Norwich duo Let's Eat Grandma (a name inspired by a joke that highlights the importance of comma placement, if you're wondering...) and their 2nd LP I'm All Ears with SOPHIE on production duties was excellent synth-pop and really something that you'd expect CHVRCHES to come out with rather than the rather dull thing that they did this year. “Falling Into Me” is the centrepiece with so many different wonderful things going on, yet somehow it still holds together. The sax that comes in at 5 minutes is glorious, and so good that I gave it 3 weeks at number 1 back in May.

#006 Moses Sumney “Rank & File” Debut: 12th August 2018 / CR: 38-30-21-17-13-08-02-01-01-02-03-05-08-13-19-26-33-39-47-49 (20 weeks)

“Rank & File” has been knocking about for a few years but 2018 seemed as appropriate a time than ever before to release the killer protest track by 28 year-old American singer/songwriter Moses Sumney. His voice is so powerful and his eerie falsetto wraps around each cutting sentence to immensely powerful effect. The song is framed around the tension between the police and predominantly black communities in America and was inspired by Sumney’s first time attending a demonstration in his hometown of Los Angeles, following a grand jury’s decision not to indict the officer who shot Michael Brown.

Delighted to see "Danny Nedelko" and "Falling Into Me" in the top 10 - will do a full recap on everything in your top 100 when it's done. The two contenders for #1 that spring to mind would be "In My View" and "Lifetime", both of which are superb so fingers crossed heart.gif

#005 Sufjan Stevens “Mystery Of Love” Debut: 7th January 2018 / CR: 43-30-18-11-07-04-02-03-04-04-04-07-12-14-19-25-30-36-45 (19 weeks)

Not a number 1 hit for Sufjan Stevens but still an absolutely massive hit that scores the biggest song-to-not-hit-#1 honours for 2018. “Mystery Of Love” was used in the soundtrack to the Luca Guadagnino directed Call Me By Your Name and it is an incredibly beautiful and fitting song which perfectly captures the fleeting raw emotions of first love in the film. One of my favourites that he has ever released!

#004 Jon Hopkins “Emerald Rush” Debut: 11th March 2018 / CR: 30-14-08-04-02-01-01-01-02-03-05-06-09-14-23-31-41-49 (18 weeks)

Another fantastic single from the Kingston upon Thames producer Jon Hopkins who first hit #1 in 2014 on my chart but now returns to follow-up Immunity with the equally enchanting Singularity - the lead single from which was this epic slice of piano melody soaked in chaotic thundering, driving drum stabs and ghostly voices building to a wonderful climax. “Emerald Rush” dutifully powered to number 1 in April and took some budging after chalking up 3 weeks at the summit.
