Couldn't find a thread and I think this needs one!
Directed by Mike Flanagan (Haunting of Hill House, Oculus, Ouija II: Origin of Evil) Based on Stephen King's novel primarily rather than the film, but it is apparently set in the same cinematic universe as Kubrick's film so will hopefully bring the two original versions together in some way. Out next Thursday (Halloween as appropriate) |

The film version of The Shining is one of my favourite films, though I haven't read the novel even though I have intended to (I'm actually reading the sequel now in preparation for this so I may be a bit backwards here ) and I'm aware they differ drastically so I hope to make that up soon, they both seem horror classics in very different ways so I really hope this film can succeed in bringing them together. I definitely trust Mike Flanagan as all his stuff has been wonderful recently, and apparently Stephen King himself approved of this, and given he's always hated Kubrick's adaptation, that's a good start!

'The Shining' is good, but so overrated. I'm intrigued by this and Ewan McGregor is one of the consistently solid actors around today. Looking forward to this! The production has been a mess lately. They pushed it back to the 20-something of November before outcries saw it brought forward again to the Halloween release date :') I hope they haven't rushed the final tweaks for this.

This was SO good! Such a slick sequel and gripping / emotional throughout with a good few creepy non-jump scares too. All the characters were well thought out and built and it tied into The Shining so effortlessly as well. For as long as it was, it really didn't feel it which is always a sign of a good film.

Yeah. I really enjoyed this too. It wasn't reliant on jump scares to be creepy and that to me, felt SO refreshing. I was genuinely creeped/grossed out by a lot of it! It's the creepiest movie I've seen in a while.
Joe said to me it kinda reminded him of True Blood and I definitely understand what he means. The tone was v similar to 'The Haunting Of Hill House' to me. The ONLY negative for me was that a lot of the scenes plodded along a bit too much and I feel like we coulda got just as strong and a tighter film had it been a bit shorter. The worst scene (as in most horrific) for me was Jacob Tremblay's entire scene. It was so uneasy to watch (obviously and that was the point of it). But I definitely wasn't expecting to see as much of it as we did! Some really beautiful shots in this too! Like when she's searching for Abra and is flying through the sky & then the tables turn and gets her hand caught etc.. so well done! |

I must plan to see this. I was reminded by certain streaming services that I'd never got around to watching The Shining at all, so I finished watching that about an hour ago and am currently just in the after-process of taking THAT all in.
If the reviews hold good, should be very exciting. |

Really loved this as expected It struck a very good balance between the film and the book and I was glad that it was very faithful to the plotline and kept the sentimentality of the novel, but also made it much darker to reflect Kubrick's side. The True Knot were actually threatening and scary in this one, the Baseball Boy scene was tough to watch but it exemplified that perfectly, they really were not at all scary in the book and it never felt like they were a threat to Abra at all they didn't even kill any of the good guys, Abra's dad and Billy both survived!, top marks to Rebecca Ferguson and Kyleigh Curran who portrayed their roles perfectly.
I was never particularly bored even with the long runtime, if anything, the scenes in the Overlook felt a bit weaker overall if just because there seemed to be a shot for shot remake of every iconic scene from the original and some felt particularly shoehorned in! I did love Dan's final sacrifice as a callback to how the novel of The Shining ended, I can see why King liked this film A real shame about the poor Box office results, hopefully time will be kinder to it, worked with the original after all! |

The Shining references were the best bit of this. They have recreated moments of the original brilliantly and really paid attention to tiny details that made Kubrick's the masterpiece it was.
The rest of the story was so tedious however - I see the plot of the original as one of the mind, the sinister mind that lays between the fine line of sanity and insanity. This had a major focus on the supernatural and 'witch hunting' and for that reason it didn't seem like a natural progression from the original. Not a terrible film, but flawed, and for a Kubrick fanatic, it was not what I wanted really. I am majorly biased ofc towards Kubrick's legacy though ~ |
