ROM remains the best big name collaboration of 2020, and I say that from a completely unbiased perspective!

The best song of 2020: Rain on Me by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande
In this terrible year, Rain on Me seemed to face the nightmare head on – and then deliver you from it

Behind the illness, grief, political failure, racist violence, unemployment and myriad other acutely painful moments, 2020’s lesser sin is that it has been chronically boring. With pubs muted, nightclubs shut, festivals cancelled and impulsive sexual hookups outlawed, it has been a year of Januarys, a desert of vibelessness.

We’ve clearly tried to make our own fun at home: some of the biggest pop hits of the year have been extremely danceable, from Imanbek’s remix of Saint Jhn’s Roses to Nathan Dawe and KSI’s Lighter, and Joel Corry and MNEK’s Head & Heart. These cheery bacchanals were like tequila shots, though – we also needed something that would hydrate us, emotionally speaking.

By late May, the UK was out of lockdown, but now being told to “stay alert” for a virus that could only be seen through an electron microscope. Respite was needed more than ever. Enter Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s duet Rain on Me, a song that didn’t just face the heavy weather of 2020, but told it to come and have a go if it thought it was hard enough.

Not since YMCA has text been so throughly trampled by subtext to a disco beat. Rain on Me is technically a breakup song: “At least I showed up, you showed me nothing at all,” Gaga sings in the opening verse, scorning a lover who has fallen short of expectations. But just as YMCA isn’t really about having a nice meal at a community centre, Rain on Me isn’t about that at all – in the minds of anyone who listened to it, it’s about how bad 2020 is. “I’d rather be dry / but at least I’m alive” runs the chorus – being thankful for not being dead was where we reset the bar this year, and it was thrilling to hear someone sing it so honestly.

That lyric also references Gaga’s relaxed approach to going sober: “I can either lash the hell out of myself every day for continuing to drink, or I can just be happy that I’m still alive and keep going,” she said in May. Again there’s a broader subtext: this year of all years, we should try and see the glass as half full, and savour what’s left. That the line was often misheard as “I’d rather be drunk” is rather telling.

Rain is such a rich symbol in pop, stretching from Dylan, stoic in his hard rain, to the liquid assets of dripped-out stars joyfully making it rain. I particularly like songs about the euphoria of getting soaked to the skin, whether romantically in Love Unlimited’s Walking in the Rain, raunchily by East 17 on Let It Rain, or with glorious absurdism in It’s Raining Men. Rain on Me is in this lineage, with Gaga and Grande singing as if saturated – Gaga is earnest, closing her eyes and letting it drench her, while Grande is blithe, as if caught in a downpour on the way home and choosing not to care. The determined invitation to “rain on me” is the opposite of Rihanna’s Umbrella or Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain: instead of trying to shelter from the storm or biblically transform it, Gaga and Grande ask for the worst thing to happen so they can be delivered from it; Grande also calls for the rain to wash away her sins. That sense of transcendence makes it such a potent song in 2020, by acknowledging the rain and dancing through it.

Even the production sounds soaked: a cascade of piano house, disco strings, French Touch bass lines and wind-whipped EQ effects. Drawn to its brain-saturating effect, I’ve reached for Rain on Me over and over again this year, half cut with my headphones on in my living room on another dull Friday night – it takes you outside, into wet streets, into the lives of others.

As the song finishes in a beautiful storm of vocal ad-libs and churning sound, the effect is like being teeth in a mouthwash advert, a baby in a baptismal font, Hugh and Andie at the end of Four Weddings: your mind and spirit are left quenched. Is it raining? I hadn’t noticed.

The whole list:

20
Daniel Avery – Lone Swordsman

19
Chloe x Halle – Do It

18
Terrace Martin and Denzel Curry – Pig Feet (feat Kamasi Washington, G Perico & Daylyt)

17
Romy – Lifetime

16
Fiona Apple – Ladies

15
Dua Lipa – Hallucinate

14
Pa Salieu – My Family (feat BackRoad Gee)

13
Bob Dylan – Murder Most Foul

12
Miley Cyrus – Midnight Sky

11
Jayda G – Both of Us

10
Rina Sawayama – XS

9
Perfume Genius – On the Floor

8
Dua Lipa – Physical

7
Waxahatchee – Fire

6
The Weeknd – Blinding Lights

5
Sault – Wildfires

Like new shoots coming through stubble burned off a field, the mysterious UK neo-soul group consider the transformative effect of fire as they face the pain of police brutality with a determination to survive and indeed thrive. Over a rhythm section pitched perfectly between a boom-bap hip-hop break and a 60s pop-soul beat, there is a profound intimacy to the arrangement: you can feel the fingers on thick double bass strings and the echo of a piano in a room, giving the sense of a group huddled together. The vocal, drifting into the red, also feels scorched but tenacious. BBT

4
Megan Thee Stallion – Savage feat Beyoncé

J White Did It’s chiming production on Savage hits like sunlight in a swimming pool, the rays refracted and glinting beneath the blue. That sound is as prismatic as the personality traits that Megan coolly ticks off in the chorus, one inscribed in rap legend even before Beyoncé joined her for the remix. A production this perfectly balanced could easily have been crushed by the kind of ungainly, all-star streaming bait that has proliferated in recent years, but Beyoncé’s playfulness and the duo’s kindred Houston spirit keeps things hummingbird-nimble. Brimming with the sense of two titans sparking off one another, never burdened with the weight of legacy, Savage becomes a constantly renewing source of freshness. LS

3
Christine and the Queens – People, I’ve Been Sad

Well, haven’t we all? That wryly understated admission in the title sums up the candour, humour and acute feeling that defines Héloïse Letissier’s pop project, and they’re words that many of us needed to hear this year as weeks of physical disconnection turned into months. “If you disappear then I’m disappearing too” is a helpless yet comforting chorus, sung as a duet between two versions of herself that desperately want to become one. It’s also one of her funkiest performances, recalling the way Michael Jackson would place gasps, hisses and monosyllables exquisitely on and around the beat, but done at a measured tempo. BBT

2
Cardi B – WAP feat Megan Thee Stallion

The Republicans got it all wrong: the real transgressive delight of WAP was how Cardi and Megan revelled in bodily fluids during a year of (admittedly justified) paranoia about the minutiae of droplet transmission. Indeed, their cups ranneth over so much that the noise from prudes losing their minds over WAP (the imagined damage it might do to kids’ ears receiving noticeably more airtime than the actual trauma Megan sustained after being shot) threatened to overshadow the duo’s phenomenal performances. It’s a timeless two-hander, Cardi gruffly indomitable as she demands due respect for her right to pleasure; Megan spinning heads until the hapless man in her grip can’t remember the excuse for his lacklustre loving either. The only downside to their gleeful slip’n’slide is that you’ll never look at mac and cheese the same way again. LS

7. Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande – ‘Rain On Me’
Is there a better synopsis of 2020 than “I’d rather be dry, but at least I’m alive”? ‘Rain on Me’ heralded Gaga’s return to fully-fledged pop, as she teamed up with Ariana for a dose of catharsis set to a 90s house beat. Cruel twists of fate have kept this tune from its true home on the dance floor but for now, we can live vicariously through the storm. EH.

CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

08. Lady Gaga – Chromatica

Origin: New York, New York

The Gist: Stefani Germanotta (aka Lady Gaga) is back with her first pop-centric album since 2013, and it lives up to the long-awaited hype. There’s not much to say about Gaga that isn’t already known to the public, but she took some time off pop music to try a bit of country twang on Joanne in 2016, made a little, not-popular-at-all movie that you’ve definitely never heard of called A Star Is Born, had a full-blown Las Vegas residency … she’s been busy. But she’s back to her roots, and that’s all that matters.

Why It Rules: Maybe it’s the pandemic and how it’s made us all feel, well, some type of way, but this might have been the best time in history for Gaga to re-emerge and reclaim her throne as the Pop Queen. The world is burning down, so, in the words of Bowie, let’s dance. Lady Gaga proved to us back in 2008 with her debut, The Fame, that she was a force to be reckoned with, and now, more than a decade later she’s reminding us that not only is she still that same 5’2” force, but now she can do it on a lengthy concept album that, from start to finish, is just banger after banger with a few dramatic transitions. She uses her resources wisely on Chromatica, between enlisting other pop gurus like Ariana Grande and freakin’ Sir Elton John to guest on tracks, highlighting the singles with already-iconic music videos, and even adding some K-pop flair with a BLACKPINK feature. This album toes the line into house music territory, which is new for Gaga, but as with the vast majority of what she does, she does it with extreme success. –Annie Black

Essential Tracks: “Stupid Love”, “Sour Candy”, and “Rain on Me”

The Line of the Best Fit

QUOTE
47. Chromatica by Lady Gaga

While her 2016 album Joanne received mixed reviews, Lady Gaga’s sixth studio album Chromatica was the fastest selling record here in the UK in 2020. After winning an Oscar for "Shallow", Gaga returned to her ultra glossy dance-pop roots on this album, much to the delight of her fans.

With a sound that nods towards house, techno, and synthpop, punctuated by cinematic instrumentals, Chromatica has been designed to help listeners escape to the record's eponymous fictional world. The album hosts two UK chart-topping singles: “Stupid Love” and “Rain On Me”, a collaboration with Ariana Grande. The album credits include an eclectic, impressive mix of artists too: Elton John sings with Gaga on “Sine From Above”, Blackpink feature on “Sour Candy”, and Skrillex has a writing credit for “Plastic Doll”.

While the polished production and dancefloor beats make the record feel like one of Gaga’s most upbeat creations, the overarching lyrical themes of overcoming trauma and experiencing poor mental health means it is also her most personal release to date. KATE CRUDGINTON
