Impressive sales for It Wasn't Me in its week 4. Has any other bestseller of any year had only 1 week at #1? (Not counting Love The Way You Lie which had none)

Bugzy Malone and Emeli Sandé
Welcome To The Hood

5th single from The Resurrection
Released: 18th March 2021
Label: B. Somebody

Biography

Bugzy Malone
Manchester-based MC Bugzy Malone exploded on the indie grime scene in 2015, racking up 18 million views plus a MOBO nomination that year for Best New Artist. He made his debut in 2010 with the Swaggaman mixtape, and Why So Serious followed in 2011, while Lost in Meanwhile City dropped in 2012. His "0161 Manny on the Map" T-shirts began to be spotted in 2014, a ramp-up year that featured the release of The Journal of an Evil Genius, a mixtape supported by six straight weeks of new video uploads. His 2015 appearance on BBC Radio 1Xtra's freestyle show Fire in the Booth received millions of views within the month it was uploaded; then the Stereotyped mixtape landed before the official release Walk with Me appeared on the Grimey Limey label. The debut EP climbed into the Top Ten of the U.K. albums chart.

Malone saw more success with his subsequent EPs; 2016's Facing Time once again dominated the U.K. Top Ten upon its release. That same year, Bugzy put out a trilogy of music videos entitled Section 8(1), with each video intended to accompany one of three singles from the Facing Time EP: the title track, "Beauty and the Beast," and "I Suggest." The young MC's success became the ultimate catalyst for his burgeoning workflow, and his prolific output produced another release not long afterward with 2017's King of the North EP. The effort featured U.K. 2-step garage duo DJ Luck and MC Neat. The following year, Malone returned with his proper debut album, B. Inspired. Released on his own label, the album saw him working with the likes of producers Zdot and Diztortion on the tracks "Warning" and "Drama."

Emeli Sandé
Emeli Sandé is no stranger to crowds—she performed to roughly a billion people at the London 2012 Olympics—but she knows that music’s deepest meaning is often experienced alone. “To be able to have that privacy with someone is something I don’t take for granted,” she tells Apple Music. That duality resonates in the Scottish singer/songwriter’s unique brand of adult-contemporary soul music, which focuses her powerhouse voice on more intimate questions of honesty and self-knowledge. Born Adele Emily Sandé in Sunderland in 1987, she took early inspiration from her Zambian choirmaster father, then got her start featuring on singles by Tinie Tempah and Wiley. On her debut album, 2012’s Our Version of Events, she blended R&B and pop with orchestral strings and rhythms descended from decades of club music—a bold, buoyant sound, swollen with feeling and the perfect match for her unstoppably expressive voice. After a four-year stretch in which she struggled through depression and divorce, she returned with 2016’s triumphant, electronically tinged Long Live the Angels. Then, in 2019, she brought a fresh perspective to self-empowerment with REAL LIFE, pairing her messages of uplift with the most rousing and original songwriting of her career, incorporating gospel choruses, country soul and flickering disco funk. “I want people to know they’re not alone,” she tells Apple Music of the album’s messages. “‘Extraordinary Being’—it’s like, you’re amazing! You’re not alone! I’m here to help.” Ultimately, she says, the question that motivates her is, “How can I truly connect? The realer I can be, the realer the connection can be.” - Apple Music

Biography

Lil Tjay
Lil Tjay is stuck between two worlds. He grew up in the South Bronx, where the tradition of hustlers-turned-rappers is less a myth than an everyday reality. Born in 2001, though, Tjay was also deeply obsessed with the culture of the internet; his two favourite artists are Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne. This duality is his greatest strength. The MC, born Tione Jayden Merritt, isn’t afraid to rap about both sides of his childhood. “I was just an innocent kid, but I still had that street view,” he explained to Apple Music. “I had that balance. I just rap about things that I’ve been through.” His first hit, 2018’s “Resume,” was a SoundCloud sensation, released when Tjay was just a teen. He credits his sharpened pen to his stint in prison on robbery charges a year earlier. On the track, he touches on the fragility of his success when he raps, “I bug out on all instrumentals/It might be my time, but I can't go.” As his career progressed, though, he became more comfortable with his fame and supplemented his melodic flow and infectious, unforgettable bars with talk of designer clothes and foreign cars. His biggest hits, like “F.N” from 2019’s True 2 Myself, move from lamenting his past to celebrating the present. “Cartier glasses, 20/20, got a clear view/You a man, I don't fear you/Act up, we gon' mask up, boy, I dare you,” he raps. Lil Tjay is honest in discussing his path because he knows it’s what makes him him. “All my songs are relatable to my story,” he told Apple Music. “I just hope they’re relatable to my fans, too.” - Apple Music

Polo G
Even in the crowded field of mournful singer-rappers, Polo G stands out. It’s not the depth of his trauma—poverty, hunger, gang violence, drug addiction, and prison, all before his 20th birthday—or even his willingness to share it. It’s his focus. Listen to a Polo record—“Heartless,” “Pop Out,” “Through da Storm,” “Go Stupid”—and you can hear an artist obsessed by craft. The flow is dense but melodic, the lyrics plainspoken but crammed with imagery and detail, more in tune with classic rap virtuosity than the loose impressionism that ruled most of the 2010s. And in a culture of rappers making records back-to-back-to-back to capitalize on interest, Polo has been borderline stingy: no mixtapes, no bloated deluxe editions three months after the initial drop, albums running closer to 40 minutes than 80. He’s said in the past that he doesn’t freestyle, he writes. And when he’s done writing—that’s when he goes to record. And if he doesn’t love what comes out at the session? Like, love-it love? He keeps it to himself.

Born Taurus Bartlett in 1999, Polo was raised in Chicago public housing, coming up through the rough, quick-delivery style of local hip-hop known as drill. Like local heroes G Herbo, Lil Durk, and, to a lesser extent, Chief Keef, Polo’s primary subject was pain: personal, racial, generational. But as compelling and tightly wound as his debut was (2019’s Die a Legend), he knew you could only get so much mileage out of the same story, and took his follow-up—2020’s THE GOAT—as a chance to evolve, exploring more pop- and club-oriented sounds while retaining the intensity that makes his performances shine.
- Apple Music

Fivio Foreign
Hip-hop was born in the Bronx, but much of the action had left the city by the late ‘90s. Then came drill, a sound that combined dark Chicago beats with UK grime before Brooklyn claimed it as its own, thanks to artists like Pop Smoke, Sheff G, 22Gz, and then-rising star Fivio Foreign whose bold 2019 anthem “Big Drip” signaled that hip-hop was back in New York. Growing up in East Flatbush, Foreign (born Maxie Lee Ryles III in 1990) began rapping as a kid, whipping up rhymes with an older cousin. In his teens, he picked up the name Lite Fivio, which evolved into Fivio Foreign, and started making a name for himself assisting on other rapper's songs. His breakthrough moment came on his own, though, with the song "Big Drip," an AXL BEATS-produced party drill banger. He built on his success with more singles, the four-song EP Pain and Love, and a major record deal with Columbia. Foreign is a hustler, constantly working on new projects including collaborations with some of the biggest names in 2020 rap including Drake, Meek Mill, and Lil Baby. He released his first full-length mixtape, 800 BC, in April of 2020, led by “Wetty,” a single meant to be blasted from car stereos. The world will certainly be watching what the new vanguard of Brooklyn drill does next. - Apple Music
